My first guess is FELV. I assume she's been tested, right? How about
retested if she was previously negative?

Bones was practically hanging upside down from the top of the crate after
her spay, howling at the top of her lungs. I finally decided she'd get LESS
exercise being out and walking around the house than she was getting
CLIMBING the cage. She healed fine without the cage rest, LOL!

Re: about exposed FIP cat that needs a home/The Big Picture

2006-12-13 Thread Phaewryn - Controversy Queen
You'd be shocked at the actual definition of no kill in shelter circles.
In most, it simply means that when they run out of space, they stop taking
in new animals, rather than just killing the ones that have been there the
longest. Their testing policy, and euthanasia policy outside of the space
issue has NO RELATION to their thinking of themselves as no kill. There
are countless shelters listed on many lists as no kill, shelters that
PROUDLY claim to be no kill, shelters that picket-toting hard-core
activists support as no kill, yet, the vast majority of them, if you
browse the list of cats they have up for adoption, all say cat has been
tested negative for FELV and FIV, and they don't list a single FELV+ or
FIV+ cat on their website for adoption. If you take the time to email them
and ask, Do you adopt out FELV+ or FIV+ cats? most of them either choose
to NOT REPLY, or reply back and say they don't. No kill? I don't think so...
but the majority of people in rescue circles consider them no kill. To me,
no kill means that you DON'T KILL any animals unless it is SUFFERING and
BEYOND the point of recovery. Not so for most people though.

OK, give me about an hour, I'll petfinder/adoption site surf and find you
some! There are tons of FELV+ orange kitties out there! I'll just send you
ones in FL, GA, and AL.

Sorry that took so long, I kept getting side-tracked as I was searching the
listings... I know there are more, but it gets tedious after a while since
petfinder hasn't managed to put a way to mark the cat as FIV or FELV
positive in the search results yet. Anyways, there are a few to choose from,
I'm sure any one of them would be an awesome companion.

Re: great adopter seeking Leuk+ orange young cat

2006-12-13 Thread Phaewryn - Controversy Queen
You're welcome... I know there are more cats than that, orange tabby are so
common, and so many have FELV, it's just that petfinder is not a perfect
system, so they are hard to find. Another option certainly worth considering
is adopting ANY cat from a high kill city animal control shelter, even if it
is a FELV- cat. So what if the cat gets FELV from it's companion, every DAY
it has in that adoptive home is one more days than that cat had in the
shelter! I'd say if they had the choice, any cat would probably choose to be
exposed to FELV over DEATH at a kill shelter!

Re: Slightly Confused

You're just getting answers to questions that were asked BEFORE you joined.
Once you've been here a couple of months (or as soon as a few weeks, if we
are slow on volume), you'll be all caught up on all the various topics. No,
there's no website (like yahoogroups), it's all in email. There are,
however, archives of the OLD group emails (but you can't reply to them from
the archives). You get the emails as they are sent, because we have members
all over the world, and in all time zones, and from people with all
different work schedules, you will get them at all hours of the day and
night. We do have a digest mode, if you would rather get all the emails in a
group in one bigger email. I can tell you how to change your settings if you
would like to try that. (though here in eastern USA, it's bedtime, so I
probably wont get that info out to you until tomorrow after work)
