Lance,

I will be praying for Callie and Ember. Just remember 70 % of cats already
have a built in immunity and are able to fight off the virus. No point in
beating yourself up. I know that we all do that.

 Hi everyone,

Please pray for my mom's cat, Callie. I mentioned her here a few weeks
ago, after my FeLV+ cat, Ember, bit Callie when she accidentally got
into Ember's room. Callie has had soft stools for the last four days,
and there was blood on her stool on Saturday. Since Callie hasn't been
vaccinated since she was a kitten, she probably has no immunity from
that route. She is 7 years old, and I'm hoping that she'll be able to
deal with the virus better having a more mature immune system. People
talk about age resistance with FeLV, but I don't think it can be
 relied on.

I'm dealing with an incredible amount of guilt over this. I love Callie
like I love Ember. She's one of my favorite cats ever. It was my fault
that she got into Ember's room, and it's my fault that Ember is still
here with my parents. It's also my fault that we didn't vaccinate
Callie, as I worried about vax site sarcoma for Callie, and the few
run-ins that had happened between the two cats over the last seven years
were always brief and friendly. I also feel guilty as, if I'd just
gotten in the room (quite literally) a minute or so sooner, this
 wouldn't have happened.

Please pray that Callie can fight the virus so that she isn't
persistently infected, and please pray for me. I'm dealing with a lot.

 Thanks,

 Lance

That being said I have 7 cats that were all exposed that are still with me.
And one that passed lat summer unrelated to FeLV she was 10.

A long time ago before we knew much about Felv I had a can named Black
Jack. He lived to be 11. He was always somewhat sickly. In the end he had a
wound infection that would not heal. My dad took him to the vet which would
be his last visit. I cherish all the time I had with him The vet said it
was Felv. He had been treated with antibiotcs several tmes. He was so very

Two of my cats got this. Junior went from being anemic to borderline low
and his fevers which had been as high as 106.5 went away. Now As I am
reading more I wish I had kept him on it. Tiny wasa asymptomatic but he
was positive. He actually passed 4 mos after testing positive. The felv
probably played a part. He most likely threw a clot I was with him and was
too sudden. There was no emergency vet visit. The worst part was he died on
Chstmas day. I miss them all.I ordered the IR from Revival Pet supply. I
ordered mine direct does not require a presciption.
http://www.revivalanimal.com/ImmunoRegulin-EqStim.html It was more if my
vet ordered it. I took the vial in to the vet's office and a tech gave him
the injection IV.

 Hi everyone,

A few of you may remember me from years ago. My Ember tested positive for
FeLV almost exactly seven years ago, in 2006. She was four years old then.
There have been a few minor illnesses since that wouldn't have been unusual
for a non-FeLV cat, but she's otherwise been very healthy.

Ember's white blood cell count has been persistently low. Other than when
she's had a few colds (when it shot up to around 7 to 7.5), it's been
around 3.75 to 4.15. She went to the vet two days ago for a regular
checkup, and her count is only a bit over 3. Ember's vet prescribed
Clavamox, I assume, as a prophylactic against infection.

Needless to say, this is scary news. Ember is almost 11, and we're
probably heading toward a time when any cat's immune system would cease to
be as efficient as it once was. For a FeLV+ cat, that's obviously
dangerous. I'm wondering if anyone has had recent experience with any
treatments that help stimulate white blood cell production. Please let me
 know what you think.

Best wishes to all of you and your cats,

 Lance

The real problem is feeders who do not TNR. That's how these feral/hard
stray colonies get out of control. Managing these colonies means
responsible s/n, feeding and medical treatment when needed.

I know many people who do TNR and have dedicated volunteers taking care of
them, even trapping for vet visits. Personally, I don’t like some of the
ways that TNR cats are provided or NOT provided for. Some groups spay cats
and release them almost immediately, even in freezing weather (when it is a
known fact that healing is seriously hindered) , and such consequences as
infections, and even disembowelment due to ruptures.
Yes, one should expect cats at such a ranch to be provided with medical
 care!
I can’t even imagine how many people are required to seriously care for
 700 cats!

. Fix the momma and you stop the spread of the disease in a feral
colony. I also do TNR and manage 2 feral colonies. The adult males and
females are released back after recovery from their surgeries. Males 1 day
and females 3-4 days as long as they are doing OK. The kittens I tame and
try to adopt out. The only way to combat PETA is to responsibly manage
these feral/hard stray colonies. My oldest feral is a 7+ year old male who
is only happy outside in his colony. We can't take all these feral/hard
strays in but we can give them a healthy, stress free life in their
colonies once they have been spayed/neutered. At least that way the
population is controlled.

Why? Because I took the cats to an emergency clinic (evenings, weekends).
The last cat that had a blood clot, was taken to our vet who treated the
clot to dissolve - the cat, Corgi, has a limp in one of the hind legs as a
result. Some cats are in pain from such a blood clot, others are not.

one eye dilated more than the other. He does seem aware. I got abourt half
the baby food in him. I may try more before bedtime.

He wet himself in the carrier and will not be able to use a litterbox right

Unless I missed a post I was not complaining. Sorry if you took it that way.
I have a Masters degree in horticulture. I stated before did not start
having a problem with deer until a few years ago. Everything I plant now is
deer resistant. I am not giving up my daylily collection, because I have
over 500 varieties. I started collecting before the deer changed their
geazing pattern. I know they will eat some and I accept that.

My cats love to lay amongst the daylilies. It gives the cover from the sun.

OFF TOPIC RE: DEER I think there is another forum for this. I am sorry for
posting here.

Natalie,

Hold on. I am not blaming the deer. I was over simplifying, so I apologize.
I have oppossum raccoons and squirels too. I battle the deer beacuse they
eat my daylilies. I have lived here for 25 years and five years ago the deer
became a problem. NOT their fault but the fault of man. I will not get into
that. I do not think the deer need to be shot or anything like that. I chose
repellants to hopefully get them to change their browsing patterns. They are
creatures of habit. I felt sorry for them two winters ago when there was no
nut crop in the fall and we had lots of snow here in VA. They did a number
on plants they rarely touched in the past so I know they were hungry.

Ticks are the worst near wooded areas and in the woods. They are in tall
weeds, and shrubs. We have lots of deer and deer ticks, the smaller ticks
carry lyme disease. It even the nymph stage can tramsmit lyme. The deer
population has exploded here and so have the ticks. Last year the cats would
get in a nest of then and be covered with the small nymph stage. They would
engorge and I would have hundreds crawling on my bed. I uses a lint roller
and duct tape to get them up, but what a pain. They are not as bad this year
but I started using the Frontline earlier. Last year I had to rush out and
get it where I could. I did not get the cheapest price, but I still bought
 the dog size.

As for Revolution I was not going to go there but I did not have a problem
with it. I have heard it is safer then the other fles controls, because it
works in a different way. I am not doubting what your vet says. Poison is
poison. Sometimes a cat will lose hair where it is applied and it says that.
I did have this happen with one of my FeLV cats. He was the cat who probably
had Feline infectious anemia which is transmitted by fleas so for him better
to make sure there are no fleas it only takes one flea to infect a cat, and
a feline leukemia postive cat cannot fight off the infection.

I have not used the nematodes but I have been interested in doing so. I do
not have a lawn and fleas tend to live in grassy areas. They just feed on
our pets.

[Felvtalk] Pet Armor

2011-05-31 Thread Sally Davis
Chickens will eat ticks, but if a big farm it probably is not practical. I
am not making any real recommendations, just commenting. I am in the
horticulture field where chemicals are used for insect and disease control,
it is always best to rotate products so you do not develop resistance to the
chemical being used. An example would be using Frontline one month and next
month use Advantage. You would not even have to be every month maybe use one
for two months etc. Just a note about splitting it up They products are the
same ingredients and are in the same concentration in both the dog and cat
versions. Dosing in is done according to weight in dogs and cats. I am not a
vet and I am not recommending anyone do this if they are not certain. Also
cats are more sensitive to chemicals and some pesticides for use on dogs
cannot be used on cats. Be safe not sorry. :-)

Now I am not going to say Sevin is safe for use on pets but in the old
days it is what the vet recommended for fleas and yes we used it on the
cats. Also I did not use gloves or anything like that because it was
considered very safe. You had to be careful not to get on flowering plants
as it was deadly for bees. Fleas became resistant to it. We used 5% dust not
the 10%.

For plants I do not do much spraying because people we spray too much. The
ticks have been bad the past two years. I really considered some chickens
myself, but I worry about predators killing them. As for Pet Armor Plus, it
sounds like the patent on Frontline has run out and that means we can get
generics. I plan to buy it next time I need it but I do have Frontline I
bought last year for the cats. I split it up with a syringe. I have 10 cats
and get the big dog size, I have also have done that with Advantage and
Revolution.

My Two cents.

I used Immunoregulin on two of my FELV cats. One was very symptomatic with
fevers and anemia. The other was aymptomatic. It got Junior over the hump
and he lived another two and a half years. I wish I had used it the whole
time, butI am not sure the end result would have been different. Tiny on the
other hand never really became symptomatic until his last day and he died
suddenely. He proabably threw a clot and it may not have had any thing to do
with the virus, He died Christmas day very suddenly. He only lived a few
months after the

Good luck,

House cats are the #1 predator of wild birds. The American Bird
 Conservancy
estimates up to 500 million birds per year are killed by cats. About
 400,000
are killed yearly by wind turbines (less than 20% of the number killed by
cats). So now we have another reason to keep our cats indoors -- not only
 for
their own health and safety, but for that of our BIRD population!
Save the cats and the birds: Keep Your Cat Indoors!

one to adjust is Daisy. She lost her BEST BUD during the feline leukemia

Daisy started marking when she came in heat. She had an appt for spaying. It
was at a low cost clinic so I could not get an earlier date. That was the
first of many times she peed on my headboard. Nothing like waking up to
that., Oh and yes she has very strong scented pee. It has actually gotten
better, but I cwould recognize her pee amell anywhere. She came form animal
control. I am thinking maybe out of feral cats. Who knows. She also
comunicates differently. She will bat at me or scratch my legs to get my
attention. Usually means she wants outside. Silly cat. Yep I heard that
about 8 cats as well. I have had over eight cats for at least 10 years and
yes my oldest displayed this problem as well.

Brenda,

My experience was 4 years ago but I remember like it was yesterday. Junior
ran on and off high fevers. As high as 106.5. It was actually probably early
stage for him. I decided to do the immunoregulin protocol. It kicked the
fevers and his anemia which was treated with antibiotics never came back. He
lived about 2 years after being diagnosed. Like many have said euthanasia
was suggested. Now he was sick on and off over those years and we just
treated what came along. In the end he had fluid and labored breathing and I
knew he had no fight left.

Others here have tried other protocols. We also used Transfer factor Plus
human version

time, so therefore will have some outdoor exposure still. He's had some
flea treatment at his vet visits but would be due again. He's still
battling ringworm (areas end up healing and new fur grows back) - don't
know if that effects using flea/mite treatment. The vet has been amazed
he's had no visible fleas or mites but now we are in Spring of course.

Re: [Felvtalk] Vaccine

2010-03-27 Thread Sally Davis
HI Lorrie,

Here is a link to recommendations for core vaccines as well as vaccinations
for cat at risk of exposure to FELV.
http://www.catvets.com/uploads/PDF/FINALVaccineTable12.15.pdf. FeLV is not a
core vaccination but for cats at risk it is Still an annual booster. Due to
the economic situation I have not continued this vaccination. I do not have
any positives and the cats I have were mixed. My is natural immunity in
these cats. These are my opinions.

Now that being said many vets think giving a FELV vaccination to a positive
cat can overload the immune
system and therefore do not recommend this. If I am reading you correctly
the cat is already positive. Hope this helps.

Silver is one of these cats and joined my crew after my initial panic over
the FELV outbreak. He had a canine tooth cut off yesterday because he broke
it and it was sideways in his mouth. Seems he has feline resorptive lesion.
He has always had bad breath. He was abanoned in my neighborhood and
starving when I found him. The vet said he was missing other teeth as well.
He is fat and happy now. For some reason when I lose a cat another one shows
up to take it's place. I had lost two cats to this disease when he found my
porch and was no longer intimidated by Ittle Bitty.

I have 10 cats and had I had 11 when the outbreak occurred. Of those cats,
the ones who had one vaccination given by me did not become infected. Part
of that would be bc of natural immunity and part i believe is bc the
original vaccine gave them immunity. Those shots were given 6 or 7 years
before I got a sick cat from a shelter who in turn sickened some of my
recent additions. Since then I still have these same three cats they are all
older now. I feel good about that.

This did not hold true in my case. Tiny was 5 and Junior was 4. Junior had
tested negative earlier in the year and turned positive. Daisy on the other
hand was a kitten and was a love bug to Lionel, the cat who was brought from
the same shelter.I belive he was the source cause he had a URI and tested
positive for FIV and FELV. She has never been sick. She was probably 10
weeks old and repeatedly exposed for months to him when Pumpkin died from
this. That is how I found out what was going on and tested all the cats. I
lost 4 in total. Junior lived the longest just over two years from testing
positive. He was very symptomatic.

Re: [Felvtalk] FeLV Positive Young Mom Cat Babies

2010-03-16 Thread Sally Davis
Lots of questions here. Some here may be better to answer I do not want you
to think you will not get answers. This is a fantastic group. DO not do
anything rash. Even though they are testing postive the kittens could throw
off the virus. Also there is no way to know how long they will live. So
enjoy your time with them. Give supportive care. Treat secondary infections
aggressively. You will want to retest. I think it is 90 days. The IFA is
more reliable than the snap test.

Thanks for rescuing these babies. Take a breath.

 Hello,

I'm joining this list serv with a heavy heart. We rescued a young Mom cat
and her 4 babies. They appeared healthy for all intents and circumstances.

Mom just tested positive for FeLV, 2 babies also did (one slight positive,
the other one was definitely positive), and 2 tested negative on the Elisa.

I need some help in deciding what to do...

I'd love some feedback, as the Internet only yields so much useful
 information...

 1. If the two kittens tested negative, are they likely negative?

 2. Should the positive kitten be separated from the slightly positive one
 as well?

 3. If Momma is about 6 mos old, how likely is it that she has FeLV,
considering 2 of the babies also tested for it? Is there a chance she too
could fight off the infection? At what point should Mom be retested with the
 PCR or IFA?

 4. What supplements or foods should we feed these kitties, to help them
 fight off the virus?

 5. How long does Mom have to live, if she is confirmed to have FeLV? What
are the alternatives? We rescue a lot of kittens and cats, so she will end
up living in a cage alone unless we can find her a new home, which I doubt
is going to be very likely. We don't have the funds to send her to a
sanctuary, and we also have several FIV positive cats we are sanctuarying.
Space is also an issue, as that is one less cat or litter we can rescue
since she will be in that cage for a long, long time...

I'd appreciate your insights and thoughts.

 Thanks,

 Minnie

So sorry to hear about Casper. I have one cat with leukemia that became
anemic in September of last year. He is still holding his own. He does
have non-regenerative anemia so I asked how it is that his HCT isn't
dropping if he's not making more red blood cells. I guess the spleen and
another organ can make some red blood cells too. Do you know if Casper has
regenerative or non-regenerative anemia? Either way I hope you have lots of
time left. I think it totally depends on what's causing the anemia to begin
with. I asked the internist if non-regenerative anemia is a definite death
sentence. She said there is no way to tell how long Wolfie will continue to
hold his own but she hopes he lives until he's 20. I know that's not going
to happen but it never hurts to hope. We know his odds aren't good now that
the leukemia is in his bone marrow but his odds of living this long weren't
good either and he did. Hoping for the best for Casper.

Re: [Felvtalk] Casper is sick

2010-03-03 Thread Sally Davis
Frank,

I will pray for Casper to be negative. I hope you are able to resolve his
illness quickly. I mixed my cats none of the negatives became positive. Some
of them had exposure to Felv before I knew what was going on. So they
probably had a natural immunity. But fate added two more after this all
started. They were vaccinated and remain healthy. I no longer have any
positives. Unlike others in this group mine did not live long. Only junior
survived for two years,

Years ago however I lost a cat to this disease before testing was routine.
He was at least 11 and I am sure he had it all his life. He was always
somewhat sickly. Best cat I ever had.

I too am more concerned about the panting as is a sign of anemia which these
cats are prone to getting and can kill them. If your cat does have anemia
make sure she is is checked for haemobart which is treatable. It will not
always show up when they test so most choose to treat for even if the test
is negative.

http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=1+1316aid=292

Junior was panting on his last day. He had fought a long hard fight and was
not up for heroic treatment. His spirit is free and I stay on the group to
offer help when I feel I may have something to add. This group is the reason
he was not euthanized when first diagnosed. He lived about 1.5 years and was
5 when he left me. Tiny is half brother unfortunately only lived a couple
months he too was 5 when he passed on.

Junior also had eye problems but was due to an injury prior to the FELv dx.
He went on to develop a corneal ulcer and glaucoma. He was already blind in
that eye.

Re: [Felvtalk] Lymphocyte T-Cell Immunomodulator

2009-03-03 Thread Sally Davis
Hi Sue

The company that was originally testing the product sold it to Imulan. They
decided to go ahead and market it. Anecdotal evidence shows promise. There
is a lady on another group whose husband is a feline vet and was involved in
some of the original trials. Although no longer involved in the studies he
continues to use it on some of the FELV positive cats that he treats. The
price went up considerably when it sold to Imulan. Testing is very
expensive, so it may never get the testing that one would hope for after all
we are talking about cats. Now before I get jumped on I am being facetious.
But we do know there are people who think that way. Personally if I could
have use it I would have tried. That being said I probalby could not have
afforded it. Maybe your vet can get in on one of the trials if they are
still conducting them.

Subject: URGENT NEED - Neutered Male FIV Cat Needs Home

 Hi,

I had been feeding a stray cat (Chester) all winter, trapped him on
 2/15/09,
and had him neutered, tested for FELV/FIV, vaccinated, and meds applied to
rid him of fleas and worms at the local SPCA. He tested positive at the
SPCA for FIV only. They released him to me and I took him to my vet, where
he has been since Tuesday, 02/24/09.

My vet gave him a complete physical exam and blood analysis and also
retested him for FIV using Western Blot I think as well as the IDEXX SNAP
Antigen test again. Chester is FIV positive. Vet said that he is a
healthy cat and his blood work was otherwise squeaky clean - no infections
 or problems.

FIV cats can only transmit the virus to other cats by a bite wound or
scratch that draws blood. FIV cannot be transmitted to humans or to other
animals. Nevertheless, he must be in a one cat home or in a home with only
FIV cats, and he must be kept indoors to avoid contact with other cats and
to minimize exposure to germs that can compromise his immune system. FIV
cats can live a full lifespan with proper nutrition and vet care, as with
 all cats.

Chester needs a home ASAP because he can no longer be boarded at the vet
inasmuch as they only do medical boarding and Chester will have no place to
go as of Monday, 03/02/09. If that happens, he may have to be put to death
because (1) he has been use to being fed for two months now and to put him
out without food would be very cruel - I cannot continue to feed him
 because
of complaints to my apartment manager and it is against the town's law and
the animal control officer is aware of it, plus (2) Chester should not be
allowed to come in contact with non-FIV cats, of which there are several
pets let out by their owners in this apt complex.

Chester is not feral, but needs socialization; he allowed my vet to pet and
stroke him. The vet picked him up, however, Chester was tense, but not
aggressive - just scared. Chester is probably about 3-4 years old, black
 and
white, green eyes, and adorable. Please help if you can. Time is really
getting short inasmuch as I have to pick him up from my vet on Monday,
03/02/09 and still have no home for him and no place to go.

Chester is located in Red Bank, NJ (Jersey Shore area)

Hi Jenny

That is so great of you to offer. I hope Mike gets back to you. I actually
mixed my positive and negative after a short period apart. The negatives
were vaccinated. There had already been exposure in my case. It was less
stressful for all the cats. I have 11 now. I think I had 9 then but new ones
kept showing up. They get dumped here.

get over. Then on 2-13-09 the vet discovered it had come back even more
rapidly than the first time. x-rays showed nothing in the lungs or spleen
but the liver was hard to see though not enlarged. This past Monday he
stopped eating and drinking and I knew it was time. The next morning I
took my heart disguised as a little 7 pound black and white angel to the vet
for the final time. The night before I laid him on the bed next to me and
he stared into my face purring for hours. The cancer had spread to his
liver and I knew I could not stand for him be in pain. Before I took him
to the vet I wrapped him in his cat blanket and walked him all over the yard
so he could see his ducks and feel the air on his face. He loved to be
outside. So from start to finish he lived 19 weeks from diagnosis. This
is a deadly, aggressive cancer and I hope none of you experience it with
your babies. I had my little man for 8 years and 7 months and they were
 worth every minute.

If you search the groups archives you will see posts from Hideyo, who used
to be a member on this group. It appears she had some luck with this drug
reversing severe anemia. You may want to join the yahoo FIV group and it is
a very technical group when it comes to treatment. You do not need to have
an FIV cat to join. Some treatments overlap and They will welcome you with
your FELV cat.

I had luck with immunoregulin reversing anemia.

Good Luck

Just explain your needs and you have an FELV cat. There are other members

I am certainly not diagnosing your cat. In humans a smooth tongue is a
symptom of anemia. Anemia is common in FELV cats. Are her gums pale? I had
severe anemia and my tongue was very sore as well. Could be why she is not
