Lilas was a sweet little beautiful tortie. She had a BIG spirit and LOTS of
love to give !!! She had the chance to live in a loving home of her own for a
short time, but I know it was full of LOVE. Her sister Posey passed a couple
weeks before but also lived in the same wonderful home. Camden lovingly calls
his home Camp Feleuk. He has a big heart that has had to deal with MANY losses
lately, but I know he believes it was worth giving the special babies a REAL
home of their own. :)

Simon was a beautiful fluffy tiger and white laid back sweet boy. I fell for

short time we had him.
Wopsle, was a sweet fluffy black boy,who recently just started following all

If any of you would like to see pics of any of our Sids kids.I post them on
Facebook.Just friend me and let me know you are from the group. Look for Sherry

Here are a few of our own Dr. Jens words to us tonight:

How fitting that this Memorial Day weekend we have two of our own leaving us,
only to leave the fondest of memories in their wake; heartbreaking but
thankfully they at least had a few good, no GREAT, weeks with all of us. God
bless these little creatures and the struggles they were faced with in their
short time here on this earth.

Bless you all and have a safe holiday weekend

Got a call at 5pm yesterday that someone had seen a kitty in the ATM drive thru
lane at a local bank. I ran up there didn't see a thing at first. She was a
tiny brown tabby sitting so still in the leaves that I didn't even see her. She
blended right in. She was so cold wet could barely make a sound. I put her
in a carrier wrapped in a towel met some other volunteers who took her to the
emergency vet.
She was so cold her temp didn't even register. She was FeLV positive had
severe ulcers in her mouth. The vet estimated her to be about 2 years old
though she looked like she was only 3 months old. After some time trying to
raise her temp they determined the best thing was to euthanize her. Her heart
was barely pumping.
I named her Lola so she would have a name before going over the Rainbow Bridge.
It is so sad to think how long she may have been there how many people saw
her just kept going without a second thought. What a sad story. Even sadder
because I know she is just one of many who meet their end this way. At least
she had a name :(

Tweezer lost his battle with this horrible disease this afternoon.  He had
an aggressive lymphoma so there was no hope that he would get better or that
he could even be made more comfortable.  He crashed at the beginning of this
week and was having spasms that were making it very difficult for him to
eat, drink or even to stand.  He has been very unhappy and scared all week
long.

When I took Tweezer in he was extremely malnourished and had worms, ear
mites, goopy eyes and an upper respiratory infection.  As his health
improved he became such a happy cat!  He was so happy to be alive, he always
wanted to play and be loved.  This is a you-tube link to a video I took of
him a few months ago.  He would come to me and ask me to come and play with
him and then lead me to the toys.

My Chloe died today - she's a gray and white FELV kitty, a lovely and sweet
kitty.  I got her in Sept 2005, from a lady in Oklahoma named Jennifer.
Jennifer had been a vet tech, and had FELV cats, but when her baby developed
serious problems and she needed to pass her specia needs cats on to someone
else, and I took them.

One by one they have passed on.  Chloe was the last - she was 15 or 16, claws
had grown out, and she was having some kidney problems.  Fall is so dry, it
seems to be hard on kidney cats.

Chloe was a sweetie and had a soft and gentle passing.  I kept covering her and
trying to keep her hydrated and warm, but she said no mom, I don't want the
cover on me. Sleep soft sweet Chloe.

Gloria

Wolfie left us today after a long battle with leukemia.  I took him in 6 years
ago after he was found in a pole barn and was going to be put to sleep after
testing positive.  I still remember going to see him for the first time.  He
had cuts under his eyes and looked so sad.  I couldn't possibly resist even
though my husband is horribly allergic to cats.  Wolfie thrived in our home and
was a joy to live with for the past 6 years.  The horrible sores under his eyes
went away and he grew to be one of my biggest boys.  He was always a momma's
boy and spent hours and hours on my chest purring and kneading daily.  Even
when I was pregnant, he spent every night on my belly.  He was the most
opinionated cat I've ever had and he insisted on his way at all times but it
was an honor to know him.

He was diagnosed with non-regenerative anemia on my b-day last year and has
graced me with almost another year to enjoy him.  I'm so grateful for that time
with him.  He has fought for the last year with such strength, courage and
amazing determination.  However, he decided today was the end of the fight.  I
wouldn't expect anything less from him.  My favorite number is 23 (hence my
e-mail address awilkins23) and while it's a sad day, I'm glad that I will think
of Wolfie with wonderful memories every time I see that number.

Thanks for all the advice and support that I've been given while trying to help
Wolfie beat this disease.

Amy

A week ago I thought it was over because he was so lethargic and anemic-the vet
visit on 7/23 showed on the in-office test a PCV 18.5% and TP 4.2 (I'm not
totally sure what the TP is). His gums were pale, almost white and he was
barely
eating-it comes on so fast. We started him on Procrit 3 injections a week, doxy
2x a day and an iron supplement capsule 1x a day. Interferon 2x a day. We also
gave both he and Rosie their LTCI injection-it was 4 weeks from the last one.
His lab CBC came back with RBC 3.52 HGB 5.1 and HCT 22.5 Lymphocytes 5. He has
also lost a little over a pound since January, but isn't thin.  A week later on
7/29 we took him in for an in-office test  (Thursday) his PCV 23% and TP 5.0-he
is acting like his old self again-racing me into the kitchen, standing on his
hind legs and grabbing the cabinet door with his huge paws and banging the door
until he gets a treat! He is back to jumping to the top of the bookcase in the
spare room-the eagle is back! He is still resting  more than usual-but isn't
wiped out like before-if he hears something interesting, he just has to see
what
it is-Mr Nosy! I am hopeful that he continues to improve-I don't know what
triggers the anemia, in January his HCT 39.5  HGB 14.4 and RBC 10.85. He is so
good natured-you can give him his shot and pills and he still follows like a
puppy and never gets difficult to doctor.  Alice and Glenn humans owned by
Murphy and Rosie!

I am heartbroken to say that this afternoon my sweet Casper lost his battle.
He was one of the most sweet tempered cats I have ever known.  He never ever
bit or clawed anyone in anger, not for any reason.

He used to come to bed and make bread in the middle of the night right into my
stomach until I got in the habit of sleeping while holding his paws gently in
my hands.

He loved nothing more then to be brushed with an old blue hairbrush.  In the
middle of the night last night I was spending what I was pretty sure was my
last few hours with him brushing him with it.  He was still pushing against it
with the sides of his face and purring.  This morning when I left for work I
told him goodbye and thanked him for coming to live with me and being such a
special kitty.  My mother in law sat with him today and he passed around 2:30.
She told me the rest of the cats in the house came and sat in a circle around
him, almost like a vigil.  Orlando has slept near him for the last several days
and through the night.

I hope now Casper is in a place where there is no more feline leukemia and he
can run free and watch the birds and chipmunks all he wants.  Whenever I lose
one of these sweet kitties they take a piece of my heart.

I just mentioned my dear sweet Maxwell in a post.  I had adopted him and his
sister last yr from a rescue as FeLV+ kittens.  I lost Molly Brown to wet FIP
earlier this yr.  Today I lost Max to wet FIP.  I'm guessing their little
immune suppressed bodies were more susceptible.

It was raining as I drove Max to the vet this morning to have him PTS.  He
passed on the way.  He is now at the crematory and his ashes will join Molly's
and all my Angels.

He was a real lover.  Was happiest cuddled on my shoulder.  He'd follow me
around the house and always beat me to the kitchen where he begged for his
favorite Temptation treats.

Please add Max to the CLS.
Sadly

Baby Girl died tonight around 7:30. It feels so strange to write that; I've had
her for two years, she's been symptom-free for two yearsand then it
happened. She declined quickly. I knew she was not going to make it, so we had
a vet appointment for tomorrow morning for her to be PTS. Even a couple of days
ago she was purring a bit and looking for chin scratches and head rubs, but by
the time I left for work this morning I think she hardly knew I was there. When
I arrived home this evening she was lying on her side, barely breathing. I held
her on my lap for about 45 minutes, just waiting, then she shuddered, my lights
flickered and she was gone. She will join Duncan, Charlotte, Chutney and Frosty
Paws at the bridge. Now Celery is the last remaining cat of my original FeLV
group.

I had Frosty Paws PTS this afternoon. I sat with him all day and several times
thought he was nearly dead, but he stayed alive long enough to make it to the
vet. My vet agreed that euthanasia was the best option. I had thought I felt a
lump, and my vet said it was lymphosarcomaso I'm at peace with our decision.
I'm just so angry at the person who gave him to me - apparently he had several
episodes of sickness during the time she had him, yet I was never informed of
this. He was presented to us as an asymptomatic cat who had just happened to
test positive for the virus. If I had known this, I don't think I'd have taken
on the heartbreak of another sick cat, especially so soon after Chutney's
death. I'd only had Frosty for a little over a month, and he appeared to be
healthy until a couple of days ago. My vet said he didn't blame me for being
ticked off - what if he had had some other disease that could have been passed
to my cats? I have 3 with FeLV and 2 with FIV, all healthy...she knew her cat
would have been living with mine and yet she failed to fill me in completely on
his condition. She'd wanted to be with him when he passed, and I was so angry,
I called her this morning and told her Frosty hadn't made it through the night.
Then I hung up on her.
On a happier note - Bridget had her 4th LTCI injection today, and guess what?
She has been steadily gaining weight and visibly growing since beginning
treatment.

Dear Laurie,
There is a new article in the Jan/Feb 2010 issue of Best Friends magazine on
FIV. I think you'll find it more in line with your thinking.

Subject: Virginia Clemans article regarding Feline Leukemia Viirus

Dear Editor:

The article about Feline Leukemia Virus by Virginia Clemans is inconsistent
with my experience and, I believe, does a great injustice to cats diagnosed
with this virus. Certainly not all cats diagnosed with FeLV have the health
issues Clemans reports. I lived with two cats who were diagnosed with feline
leukemia after I adopted them. Stripes lived to age 16 years. Squeaky lived
to age 22 years. They were robust boy cats who lived together for 15 years.
They weighed 15-16 lbs. People always commented about what big boys they
were. They were playful and fully engaged in life.

Stripes had an occasional undiagnosed illness that always resolved. Squeaky
was never sick a day in his life until his final three weeks. Squeaky died
from oral cancer. We did not determine Stripes' cause of death. My vets did
not treat these cats any differently than other cats I have had. There was
no alarm sounded when their tests came back positive. The information was
given to me as part of a routine exam. I had no idea anyone thought this was
a big deal. Certainly my vets did not think so.

I rescued two other cats who tested positive for FeLV. Ollie lived to an old
age, asymptomatic except for some dental issues at the time he was rescued.
Bella is still alive. She is a 13 lb ball of love. She was rescued 3 years
ago and was an adult cat at that time. She was anemic and had a high fever
when rescued but these situations quickly resolved with medication treatment
by an internal medicine specialist.

Feline Leukemia does not have to be a death sentence. The kitties who test
positive should be retested as there can be false positives (and false
negatives). Their owners can find information and support groups on the
internet (yahoo offers several groups for FeLV cat owners). In this group
format they can talk to other people who live or have lived with cats with
FeLV. They can get questions answered. They can learn about feeding a
quality food, keeping stress to a minimum and various supplements and
treatments in the event of illness. Not all the cats who test positive will
be as lucky as those I mentioned here, but there is another side to this
disease and there are many cats who survive and thrive with this disease.

Sincerely,

Laurie Crawford Stone

I just saw an article at Bestfriends.org which I was surprised and disappointed
about:

http://www.bestfriends.org/theanimals/pdfs/cats/catfelv.pdf

The author includes What happens to a cat who has contracted the virus?

and says The virus adversely affects the cat’s bone marrow and immune system.
An infected cat becomes anemic and is unable to
fight off even routine infections. Cats with feline leukemia are commonly
jaundiced and lethargic, and they experience weight
loss, enlarged lymph nodes, and poor stamina.

It sounds like an FELV cat is going to die immediately after getting the
virus.  So I can see folks reading that article and then
euthing their FELV kitties, thinking they're doing them a favor. The 5 FELV
cats that I have now haven't seen any sickness since
I've had them.

Today, I spent an hour digging a grave to hold the body of my beloved
Mozart.   God only knows why he is still alive but I don't intend to
have another untimely period of snow and ice stop me from giving him the
burial he deserves.  Regretfully, I don't own a pyramid for his body
like the ancient Egyptian kings provided for their beloved cats.
However, I dug the best grave that I possibly could, in one of his
favorite locations, and today my wife is buying the finest shroud to
place his body in.  Our original plan for the day was to have him put to
sleep and bury him this afternoon but none of the local vets were
available so we will probably do everything possible to keep him alive
until next Saturday when our vet will be back in town and can come to
our home.

Mozart was diagnosed positive with FeLV in November 2009.  Within 2 days
of the diagnosis we put him on Imulan LTCI shots.  Unfortunately, we
started him on 1 shot per week and continued with that for 6 weeks.  He
began to go downhill quickly during the Christmas break so we increased
the LTCI shots to 3 per week but he has continued to loose weight and
the shots are helping less and less.  He is skin and bone but still has
the most incredible will to live!  He just will not give up and his
courage further confirms what I already know about him being a truly
outstanding example of the strength, stamina, and independence of his
Bengal cat heritage.  I am so fortunate to have enjoyed his company for
over 10 years and will never forget how much he taught me nor
underestimate the additional knowledge he had to share with me.

Thanks to everyone in this loving supportive group for allowing me to be
here.  It is possible to feel joy even in times of sorrow when you are
blessed as much as I have received.

Here is what Dr. Jen had to say about our Andrew...

It is with a very heavy heart that I have to tell you all that I made the heart
WRENCHING decision to let our special little crooked toothed guy go today.
We have all seen his size diminish over the past few weeks, though his spirit
wasn't affected until just recently.  Even up until the very end, he purred
like the champion that he was.  I held him in my arms and we nuzzled, his head
under my chin.  He gave me that one final gift, and I wish to share it with you
all.

I took him in as a pathetic beddraggled kitten on July 21st, 2005.  We gave him
FOUR WONDERFUL years, and in return, he gave each and every one of us
immeasurable joy.  How could we not smile looking into that goofy face:)

[Felvtalk] Mo's story

2009-08-16 Thread Sherry DeHaan
Here is the e-mail dr. Jen sent to us this evening...

On 8-13-03, I took in a tiny wounded kitten that I named Knuckles.  His forepaw
was deformed and mangled, and another shelter called to ask if we could help,
or he would have to be destroyed.
So we took the little guy in, amputated the leg, and soon after found him what
I thought was aw solid home, a friend of Tiffani's family.
All was well until the summer of 2007, when they called and asked me to take MO
back (they named him that for 'missing one')
and of course I welcomed him with open arms.
he was a mess.  he was rail thin,  And he had contracted Feleuk while in their
care, as they were letting him outside.  You cant imagine how heartsick I was -
letting a three legged boy run around the SE side of town.

Well, we fattened him up and he became a staple at Sids.
He was one of a kind, and he made everyone smile, especially since he looked
like an overplucked Thanksgiving day turkey:)
Why he overgroomed himself was beyond me:)  In going back over his files, he
was one of our healthiest Feleuk cats until this week, when he spiked fevers of
over 105.8 and nothing I did could get his temp down.  Couple that with an
anemia and the rapid decline of a personality that usually shined so bright,
and I knew last night I had to let him go - as much as I didn't want to.
Sometimes they linger on for weeks with an illness, sometimes it hits them hard
and fast; either way it is not an easy thing to deal with.

I think Diane Ruel summed it up best when she said:
I can't believe he's gone.  Our sweet boy who got along with everyone and never
made any demands.  I will miss him terribly.

I agree wholeheartedly, as I know everyone reading this does.  He was a special
boy for so many reasons.  We were blessed to have him with us:)
Mo, you are taking bits and pieces of all of our hearts with you!
