OT: update

2006-09-24 Thread felv

My son is here, and getting settled in. Zack is on the
Prozac, though it's too soon to tell any difference yet, I think. Tang had a
complete bowel compaction, and was in the hospital for 4 days, and is now on
several medications (he's doing much better now, and is off the antibiotics).
Mythic's skin is improving slightly this past week. I found out where Whitey (a
local stray tom) lives, sadly, he has been abandoned by his people, as I
suspected, but at least now I know where he lives and can feed him on his own
porch (the house is empty now), and we've made friends, I petted him for the
first time yesterday. He will need to be neutered now that I can touch him (he
came right up to me on HIS territory, he was only scared of me at my house, it
seems). I'm still not back on the list email, but just wanted to check in and
tell everyone how things were going here. Take care!

Re: Spencer and my talk with my Internist

2006-09-08 Thread felv

I'm glad he is back, and you are happier! I think the approach you are
taking now is very logical, with his best interests at heart. Perhaps you could
call around and find a vet willing to drain him at home, if he requires it
again. It doesn't seem like anything that should require a sterile surgery suite
to do...

OT: I'm going offline for a while to move my son in

2006-09-08 Thread felv

Just a quick note to inform everyone that I will be offline for the next
week or two, so if you desperately need me, call via phone. Otherwise, I'll be
back in a while! My son is moving in with me and I have to create him a room
(big construction job), get ready, move the computer network (huge job),
rearrange EVERYTHING (nightmare), and so I wont be online until that is all
resituated (or maybe not even for a while after that if my son has issues that
require all my attention).

If you are interested in ADOPTING a cat, PLEASE CALL: 802-472-8628. Our
rescue is CLOSED until further notice, and we are NOT accepting new cats. Zack
and Tang STILL need homes!

Thank you to the wonderful people who donated to help get Zack on
Prozac! It's on the way, and I really appreciate your help! Zack is no
longer in danger of being euthanized, as I am hopeful the medication will solve
the problem. I plan to give him at least a month to see if it works before I
make any further decisions about his future!

I'll miss you guys! My prayers go out to everyone with a sick baby!

in closing my sincere hope is that I'll come back to a group with no
lost members, of the human or feline kind! Blessings to you ALL!

Re: OT - Zack (explanation of my situation)

2006-09-06 Thread felv

Well his OWNERS were going to kill him JUST for being FIV+, before I
offered his LAST CHANCE to come here to join the FERAL colony OUTSIDE. I am
happy to try the medication, a list member (bless you!) is sending me a trial of
her cat's prozac to try on Zack, if it works, great, but I can't guarantee I'll
be able to afford it long term. I WELCOME DONATIONS IF YOU REALLY WANT TO HELP.
I am getting custody of my VERY troubled son on the 18th, and he requires
therapy, prescription drugs, counseling, special education, and constant
supervision (he is 12, has the emotional maturity of a 10 year old, severe ADD,
behavior issues, is under the care of a psychiatrist, and is failing miserably
in school). I have no insurance, and may not qualify for state coverage for my
son due to my income (and I work about 50 hours a week, so where I will find the
time for this is beyond me - adding to my stress). I may have to QUIT one of my
jobs in order to qualify for state assistance, and have enough time to raise my
son. I can find the time to pill Zack every day (somehow), the problem is
affording the medication. I still owe about $1400 for the last 5 year's income
taxes, I have to pay $650 rent every month, and we ALL have to eat. The check
engine light keeps coming on in my car, I just had to buy tires ($194), as the
olds ones were unsafe, and my registration ($80) is due by the end of the month.
I have to BUILD a wall to create a bedroom so all household members will have
some extent of privacy. That's estimated at about $150.I still don't have
a BED for my son to sleep on. If anyone would be willing to SPONSOR Zack, I
would be very happy to put him on medication that might help his aggression. If
I do NOT find a cure for him, TWELVE or more OTHER cats may FREEZE to DEATH this
winter, as Zack will not allow them to access the insulated shelter. Personally,
I think it's more responsible to euthanize ONE cat HUMANELY than to let TWELVE
others FREEZE to death. That is where I am at. I can't afford to put another cat
on an expensive prescription drug at this time (Mythic's is already $35 a
month). Normally, in this situation, I would get offline, and work MORE, like 60
hours a week, and catch up, but I NEED to be home with my son now, so I'm
totally lost as to how I'm going to accomplish all of this. The only reason I'm
on here tonight is because my boss from my second job called me at dinner time
and asked me to NOT come into work tonight.

Amitriptyline!? Really, what was the cat dosage for that? I get that
already for myself, and it's only $9.00 a 30 day bottle! I wonder if that MIGHT

FYI Leslie, FIP is totally unrelated to FELV, so Hepburn didn't succumb to
the FELV either. :)

http://www.vet.cornell.edu/fhc/resources/brochure/fip.html
"Is FIP related to feline leukemia? FIP
and feline leukemia are caused by different viruses. Some cats that have FIP may
also be infected by the feline leukemia virus, but the diseases are two separate
entities."

Re: OT- Strange kitty behavior

2006-09-06 Thread felv

My Tigger "pinches" me all the time now (this is a relatively new thing).
He takes a little fold of my skin in between his front teeth (the little front
teeth, not the fangs), and he slowly bites down, just enough so that my reflex
makes me jerk away and go "OUCH!". If I don't jerk away, he will "hold" that
pinch of my skin in his mouth until I pry him off. It's cute... it hurts a
little, but it's cute. I love him to pieces! Doobie, on the other hand, always
follows me into the bathroom, but he's just out for the toilet paper, not really
interested in me so much as the "yummy yummy delicacy" he sees toilet papers as.
Most of them used to follow me in there at times, because the sink is right next
to the toilet, and I'd turn the water on for them to drink out of it while I was
sitting there, but now the bathtub has a leak and runs constantly, so the
novelty has worn off. I wouldn't worry, it's pretty normal kitty behavior. Cat's
habits change and evolve as they mature.

Well, we do know nutrition plays a vital role in keeping FELV+ cats
healthy, so I suppose it makes perfect sense that the ones that arrived at your
place thin were the first to succumb to the virus, and the ones that were in
good weight are now doing well. Just goes to shows how MUCH of a difference a
good diet makes! I'm glad to hear Munch and Jett and doing well! I'm really
surprised no-one has been emailing you begging to let them adopt Munch, I mean,
not many people would get a chance to have a Munchkin! He sure is CUTE!

We're going to try medicating. I'm just not sure I can afford it long term.
I'm getting custody of my 12 year old son again on the 19th, and he's on
expensive ADD drugs, and I'm not made of money these days, with Mythic on his
medication, it's just all adding up very quickly. As usual, I just have a lot on
my plate... the truth is, Zack isn't going to do well outside, I think, because
he's thin to begin with, and I just honestly don't have room for 7 cats, myself,
my partner, and my son in a one bedroom apartment (we're in the process of
building a wall in the livingroom, to divide it into two rooms, to make another
small bedroom). I'm still holding out hope SOMEONE will find it in their heart
to give Zack a chance to be a housecat again!

I would have thought they could have at least given you some lasix or some
other kind of drug to help with the fluid buildup issue... But, at least he
feels better, that counts for a lot, even if you have to take him in to be
drained every couple of days, if it helps him be comfortable, I suppose even
without answers, it's got to count for something, right? Maybe if you just go in
and say "I just want him drained" and tell them to not do any tests or exams,
maybe they could do it cheaper?

Poor Jett. She just needs a new project, that's all. I'm sure it's only a
matter of time until you take in a new baby for her to "momma". You know, Doobie
used to "momma" Moogie like that. When Moogie died, I got Tigger. Doobie
immediately took on "momma duty" for Tigger. Some cats are just very motherly by
nature. Doobie will clean anyone who will let him, he's very sweet like that.

Oh, I see how that works... but don't you get really nasty flat patties
when it gets really low on litter? Maybe my cats pee more volume (each cat, at
one time)than yours do.
Unfortunately, no, I don't have a garage or anywhere Zack can be put for
the winter. I live in a three room apartment, and there's just no way to
separate in a place this small, plus, if he's around other cats he sprays really
bad. He doesn't spray unless there's other cats' scents he has to mark over. I
keep hoping someone will come through for him, but it'slooking really
bleak.I can't even cage him inside, as he fights with all the cats through
the cage bars so bad that it would keep us awake all night.

No local rescues will take FIV+ aggressive cats. The closest metro area is
over 50 miles away, and I've heard really bad things about craig's list anyways
(bunchers use it to scam free animals). I think he's on bemikitties, I'll have
to check. I post him periodically to the FIVCATS2 list at yahoogroups, as well
as Special_Needs_ Rescue_Cats. I've even asked Best Friends, but this cat can't
be put in with any other cats, so he will never be accepted into any sanctuary
(he could live the rest of his life in a cage somewhere, but I think euthanasia
is kinder than that). I just have to keep hoping some kind DOG rescue will
consider taking him in as an "office cat". That's the only thing I can think of
that would possibly work for him. No vet will take him as an office cat, because
of his FIV+ status. He's supposedly GREAT with dogs (at least big dogs)and
kids, his old owner had both. I've got him posted up on the bulletin board at my
vet's office too. Plus, my website, though I admit, I don't know how much
traffic my adoption page really gets.

Re: OT - Zack

2006-09-03 Thread felv

Mackenziewas my favorite feral. I see him once a month or so, Zack
scares them all away most of the time. I do know he's alive, but that's about
all I know. Him and Spooky (the bw FIV+ male) seem to have buddied up, as
they appear together when they come. Hopefully that brings them the safety of
numbers, at least. Rusty is now my new favorite, but only because he's the only
one determined enough to refuse to be run off by Zack, much to Zack's
disappointment. They fight constantly, but he refuses to give up his space (the
back yard). Zack owns the porch and the road, Rusty owns the backyard. It's
still up to debate daily though. Right now, I do have the cage mostly covered,
as I do HAVE to bring Zack inside for storms, as he freaks out when there's any
thunder at all. My main issue is my dominant male housecat, Doobie. He harasses
Zack, Zack harasses back. Even if I cover the entire cage with a blanket, and
only leave a little front of it uncovered, they will fight through the bars.
I've considered buying some Plexiglas, and making a custom cage cover to go over
it, with small bore holes drilled throughout the glass for ventilation. That
would at least stop the physical contact, BUT, it wouldn't stop the endless
"G,RRR,YEOW,HAK,SKTPF,YOW,KERTCH,HA,SHHH,GR!"
that is the constant result of Zack and Doobie being within earshot of each
other. (I'm sure I couldn't afford the materials though, anyways) I also have no
doors in the apartment, other than the one that closes off the bedroom from the
livingroom or kitchen, and the one from the bedroom to the bathroom, so even if
I put Doobie in the bedroom area, we can't get any sleep, as he will dig at the
door for hours on end trying to dig his way into the room he's locked out
of.

All of this because someone lied to me about Zack to begin with, told me he
was friendly. He was supposed to come here as his last chance, to join the feral
colony. Instead, he harasses the feral colony so bad that they would rather
starve to death than come here to eat (I can only assume that's the fate of the
cats I have not seen in months).

It is still, and always will be, my opinion that euthanasia is far kinder
than any prolonged period in a cage. I will NOT cage Zack all winter, which
would be more than half the year here (7-8 months of temperatures below freezing
at night, and at least 3 months of temperatures below freezing day and night).
He was a very much loved housecat, and even having him live outside is not nice
to him, all of his life, he slept on the bed, and snuggled on the sofa, until he
came here, were he was thrown out, and never gets more than a pat in passing.
This life is just NOT fair to Zack, and as much as I hate to do it, I will
euthanise him once it gets cold if no home is found. Zack deserves to be a loved
part of a family, like he was before, not locked in a cage. Try it for yourself.
Do something illegal, and get put in jail for 3 months. I think you'll have a
different opinion of cage life afterwards. In our society it seems that the
worst punishment we can come up with for our most rotten members of society is
caging them. Yet we do it to animals all the time, innocent animals, who did
nothing to deserve to be punished. What a hypocrisy we live in. It really
saddens me. The fact that so many of us don't even associate the word "cage"
with it's true meaning is the worst part. We've let ourselves become numb to
term. Most of us, when we hear the word cage, we think of cute kittens, reaching
out through the bars, or an animal in intensive care at the vet's clinic, where
the cage protects them and keeps them still and quiet. Yet, the very basic
principal of the word cage SHOULD invoke a dire sense of loss of freedom. We
should envision prisoners of war, old style zoos, where big cats paced back and
forth in a 8x8 cage with sterile walls. A cage shouldn't be anything positive in
our minds, it should invoke a deep sense of LOSS. You wouldn't (and can't
legally) lock your child in his room for days on end, yet we have no second
thoughts on doing it to the animals we "save" everyday. Save from what, It makes
you think. Choosing the lesser of two evils is still choosing evil, as they say
in politics. Really sad, in my opinion.

The problem is two dominate males in one territory. It's just unnatural.
I'd rather have one normal, well adjusted dominant male cat in the house
(Doobie), than two drugged into submission males (and I would have to drug them
both, as they are equally aggressive to each other). Ithink cats should be
allowed to be cats. Who am I to try to go against their very nature by trying to
make them co-inhabit the same territory? I'm very much into feline psychology,
and I don't think that mood altering drug use is the proper way to deal with a
cats natural instincts. I think that method of making life easier for the humans
involved is not in the best interests of the cats (on a very deep emotional
level). You have to understand, I NEVER agreed that Zack would be an indoor cat
to the people who brought him here. I have repeatedly contacted them telling
them that Zack is not fitting in (with the feral colony), and they refuse solve
their problem that brought him here to begin with (not finding living quarters
that allows pets) and come take him back home. Zack was obviously a disposable
member of their family.

something, cause even thick quilts can't keep Doobie away from the cage when

Well, the problem is my apartment, the bathroom is only accessible through
the bedroom, and any cat we've ever locked in there takes to howling all night
and keeps us awake.

If anyone is willing to donate toward the cause, I would be more than
willing to take Zack to the vet for an exam and Prozac prescription. I have no
idea what the cost would be, but at this point, anything is out of my range. My
boyfriend lost his job, and my job barely pays rent and feeds all the cats. I
never seem to be able to get in and out of the vet's office for under $100. Do
you think it would eliminate the spraying issue too? Cause even if he does get
along with the other cats... I still can't let him be an indoor cat in an
apartment I RENT if he's going to spray everywhere.

Re: my baby crackers

2006-09-02 Thread felv

Well, first off, find a vet that isn't so uneducated. The in house ELISA
test has a very high rates of inaccurate results. Next, take another look at the
food you are feeding, read the ingredients, it should have meat as the first
ingredient, preferably the first two ingredients, and there should be NO corn in
it at all. Good nutrition is the best thing you can do. Next, once you find a
better vet, make sure they run a second IFA, because if your first vet did such
a poor job running the ELISA, he could have messed up the sample being sent
offfor the IFA you had done through his office (good bedside manner
dictates that you DON'T say "Oh it looks like he might be ok" TWO minutes before
the test is complete, just to say "Oh, nevermind, he's infected" That's HORRIBLE
bedside manner, it's just terrible)! Then, wait 3 months, and retest again. In
the meantime, read about all the possible treatments on our main website, and
consider trying one, or more, of them, in a hope that he can "throw" the virus.
That does happen, cats can test positive, and then later become negative, if
they mount an effective immune response to the initial infection. You also might
consider a vitamin C supplement, to boost his immune system, and a good
multi-vitamin supplement in general.

Now, about your not testing prior to adding another cat, well, mistakes
happen, All you can do is learn from it, and try to do better next time. Don't
blame yourself for things you didn't know, and can't change now, that's
pointless, and doesn't help anyone. Besides, FELV is not like FIV, it's not as
contagious, it depends really very much on a cat's immune system, unlike FIV,
which is almost always spread by a bite wound. Was Crackers ever tested in the
past, before you adopted Pokemon? He might have had it all along. You didn't
specifically say he tested positive for FELV, you said they did a combo test and
he came up positive (and the doctor only knew that by looking in a book?), so I
assume since this is a FELV group, he has felv, but does he have FIV too? I
worry also, because if the vet had to look up how to read a combo test in a
book, how many of these tests has he actually run? How OLD is the batch of test
kits he is using? Has he been using the same pack of kits for the past 5 years?
Are they expired? How could he possibly know ANYTHING about FELV if he doesn't
even know HOW to run the test without reading the book? Scary, all put
together.

I've saved a ton of money by switching to a non-clumping litter called
cedarific. I buy a huge bale of it for $17, and it fills our 4 catboxes 3 or
more times. The only down side? You have to change it more often, every 4-7
days, depending on the weather (heat and humidity effects how fast the ammonia
builds up in the wet litter). it's still less than half the cost though, all
told. And the cats prefer it. I know some people say pine and cedar based
litters can be dangerous because of the fumes (I forget the technical term), but
I have uncovered pans in addition to covered ones, and so far, no respiratory
distress of any kind. They do prefer the uncovered pans though.

The cedarific weighs about 1/2 what the same amount of any clumping litter
weighs, and about 1/4 of what any clay (clumping or not) litter weighs. So if
you're trying to go for less weight, the cedarific would work better for you...
unless you flush your scoopable, you wouldn't want to flush much cedar, I
shouldn't think. For example, I could only put one box full of the old scoopable
stuff in a plastic garbage bag, or it would weigh too much, and burst the bag.
With the cedar litter, I can put all four boxes of waste litter into one bag,
and still pick it up with one hand, and it doesn't burst the bag. On the rare
incidents a bag has burst (or been torn into by the wildlife) outside, the clay
scoopable was a disaster to clean up (it left clay "slicks" when it rained on
the spilled area), where the cedar I just raked into the grass. It also comes in
smaller bags, you don't have to buy a whole bale just to try it.

Re: OT Food and IBD - Kelly

Oh yeah, I see what you're saying. So you never do a full box change with
the scoopable you use? Wow, that's amazing, I always had to change the entire
box at least once a month, as the clumps would break up over time, and the bits
would be too small to scoop, so it would begin to reek after a month. You must
be using a brand I had never tried.

Yeah, you're right about the FIV and FELV contagions risks. FELV is more
apt to be transmitted than FIV if all the cats are friendly to each other. I
wouldn't think twice of mixing a FIV in with negatives, if the FIV cat was
friendly and there wasn't any risk of him attacking anyone. Unfortunately, for
me, I have an FIV+ cat here now that is stuck outside (and I don't believe in
outdoor cats, other than ferals, but I have no options), because he is VICIOUS
to other cats. He's a horrible beast, really. Sweet as a kitten to humans, dogs,
and kids, but HATES other cats with a passion. So in cases like that, I wouldn't
mix, so he has to live outside. I've been trying to find him a home with no
other cats for months and months, but no takers so far. All the dog people don't
want a cat, and all the people that might want to adopt a cat already have at
least one, so he can't go there. Really discouraging for me, because I have
ferals that wont come home most of the time because he attacks them. It's
getting colder now, and they NEED to be able to come get in their insulated
shelter, so Zack is a huge concern for me right now. I really hate to euthanize
this cat, but it may come to that soon.

Yeah, that's just bad bedside manner. She was trying to get you to drop it,
not trying to be helpful to you or your cat. I'd seek another practice, and I'd
write a letter to the VET at the clinic you have now, explaining WHY you

(climbing up onto big bargain size soapbox)

I think a harsh mental picture is what more people need to have. If more
people cringed, we might live in a world that was more apt to protect animals.
The fact that anyone on this list wasn't aware of any of those issues in itself
speaks for the lack of animal abuse education in our society. Cringe away...
have nightmares... cry... then go out and MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Lobby for harsher
animal cruelty laws, lobby to have the states that require shelters give
unadopted animals to research facilities change those laws (the term is called
"pound seizure, I believe), Lobby to end animal experimentation or to at least
stop allowing class B dealers (also known as "bunchers"). Picket, get out and
hold a sign. We live in a wonderful democracy (those of us here in the USA) but
it doesn't work if you don't use it, so WRITE your representatives and urge them
to sponsor bills to tighten animal cruelty laws andchange the ones that
effect animals in a bad way. Visit your local high school, and colleges, and see
if they dissect cats or use animals in any of their labs, and if they do, urge
them to stop, picket them, hand out flyers to all the students about all of the
alternatives available these days. Write a letter to the editor of your local
newspaper. Just make a difference. Until now, some of you may have been unaware,
NOW, you are not. Before, you didn't know, so things happened around you without
your knowledge, NOW you know, and you have the power to try to effect changes.
That's what activism is, you see a wrong, and you set out to make it right. It's
that simple. Now you just simply have to start caring enough to take action. I'm
not saying you don't care when I say that, I'm saying, from my own experience,
it takes a LOT of willpower to take the time out of your busy life to actually
DO anything to make the world a better place. No, it doesn't just happen, and
no, others wont do it for you. So when I say you haveto care ENOUGH to
take action, I mean that you have to PUSH yourself to DO what needs to be done,
because it's really easy to take a neutral stance in life, and let everyone else
run the show, but it takes time, energy, and determination to go out and do it
for yourself. WE, you and I, are the voice and protectors of the animals we rule
over in our society, to give them voices, we have to put aside our own, and make
room for their message in our lives, then, we have to go out and spread the
message, because what good is a message that no one hears?

Every tear I shed, though they may be many, is far outnumbered by the
numbers of animals that suffer in our world, and my tears, though they may fall,
will never make a difference in anyone's life but my own, and that just isn't
enough. If only I could collect a dollar for every tear I cry, and give it to
the cause that made them fall, then, perhaps, my sadness would be justified in
itself. Actions speak louder than tears.

(off my soapbox now)

Find a new vet office, ASAP. The bat statement is laughable, the not
knowing what an IFA is is unacceptable in every way. On the bright side, they
seem so ignorant, maybe they just didn't DO the in house test correctly in the
first place, and your results are the results of bad testing technique, and a
false positive. They did pull BLOOD to do the test, right? Some really naive
vets will try to use a saliva sample... and then there is a way to run the test
which could be done incorrectly to begin with (needs a certain amount of blood,
must be clicked the right way, must be timed just so, etc), even with a good
blood sample.

My barn owner had several HUNDRED bats in his attic. INSIDE his house.
It happens! We have several hundred in the barn loft, too!Yes, BUT,
delaying a rabies vaccine two weeks isn't really going to make much difference
if it's just a booster shot, and most rabies vaccines have effect long after
their common booster date. 1 year rabies is often effective for up to 3 years...
besides, bats aren't any more likely to get inside your house OR carry rabies
than a squirrel, raccoon, or a mouse, and the chances of it biting your cat and
having rabies, if it gets inside, are astronomically against it.

Out of those several hundred bats, how many have bitten anyone or anything?
And out of those bites, how many of the victims have died of rabies?

Bats get a bad reputation for no good reason, this is simply a case of bat

I'd do the ivermectin, it's got a low risk of side effects, and will cure
him if it is a lung worm. You can do a search and find the dosages for cats
online, just to be sure your vet isn't over-dosing him. Search ivermectin feline
dose, or ivermectin dosage cat. You should pull up a few spay clinics that deal
with ferals that use it. That's it's most common use. The transtrach wash might
be useful too, but it's very stressing to the system, so I might hold off on
that one just yet.

On a side note, Linda worked VERY hard to save a Persian she took on from
me over a year ago (Seagull), and they didn't give up on him easily, but his
heart was just too far gone from Cardiomyopathy. You have to understand, for a
shelter, even giving a cat a WEEK of forcefeeding is VERY generous and modern.
Most shelters don't ever bother with force feeding at all. Sorry, but Linda is a

I was also thrilled to stumble across this
tidbit: Maine passed legislation in March of this year allowing animals to be
included in protection orders in domestic violence cases. It seems that
many men who abuse wives or girlfriends threaten or harm their animals to coerce
or control the women. (Kudos to Maine)http://lawprofessors.typepad.com/trusts_estates_prof/new_legislation/index.htmlVERMONT
TOO! We got right on that directly after Maine had their success, and we got it
approved in Vermont within a couple of months! We ROCK! I don't know why anyone
lives anywhere else...?
http://www.hsus.org/press_and_publications/press_releases/vermont_second_state_pets_protection_orders.html

May26,2006The Humane Society of the United
States and The Vermont Network Against Domestic and Sexual Violence today
applauded Governor Jim Douglas for signing into law H. 373, an Act Relating to
Orders Against Stalking or Sexual Assault. The law creates new protection
orders for survivors of sexual assault and stalking perpetrated by people who
aren't family or household members.

The law also makes
important changes to existing Abuse Prevention Orders available through
Vermont's Family Courts. One critical change will allow judges to include
pets in protective orders for persons seeking protection from abuse.
Vermont is the second state behind Maine to provide specific legal
protection for animals who often are at risk of violence at the hands of
batterers. Maine Governor John Baldacci signed his state's bill earlier this
year. New York and Illinois have introduced similar bills.
"Violence to pets is
often a tactic used by batterers to instill fear in and control over their
victims," said Joanne Bourbeau, director of The HSUS New England Regional Office
in Jacksonville. "Victims of domestic violence may be reluctant to leave an
abusive relationship for fear of retaliation upon their pets. This legislation
will give an extra layer of protection to domestic violence victims who are
seeking safety for themselves and their animals."
H. 373.represents a
compromise reached in conference committee by the Vermont House and Senate, and
was passed by both chambers on May 9.

Re: Off Topic - wills and trusts

2006-08-29 Thread felv

I'm also VERY confident that Vermont will be the first state in the USA to
ban Ear Cropping on dogs. This is a HUGE measure, because once we get Ear Crops
banned, it's only a matter of time until we get DECLAWING on CATS banned! We're
pounding away at our animal cruelty laws every session, trying to improve the
lives of Vermont's animals. Sorry, just had to brag, I LOVE where I live and the
people here! If it CAN be done, then Vermont will always be one of the first in
line getting it done in our legislature. We weren't able to get it
pastHouse last session, but you can be sure we'll be right back at it this
coming session, after the fall elections. It's already passed in the Senate, a
HUGE step! (we're also in deep discussion and making real progress on
auniversal health care plan for ALL citizens of Vermont, which means there
will be NO uninsured people in Vermont, regardless of income)

It makes me SO proud to live in a place like this! Vermont is wonderful,
you actually PARTICIPATE in the government here. We have town meetings (instead
of polling booths and paper slips, we actually sit in a big room and discuss
every law we pass or fail, with questions and answers, as a community), our
selectboard is public, and open for discussion every Thursday night, and
individuals can go in front of our state legislature and speak on issues. The
staterepresentatives and senators live right down the road, and we're all
on first name basis. It's really a great state, I wish I would have grown up
here, and not have discovered it as late as I did.

OK, off my soapbox... just couldn't resist posting about it.

Re: IFA kittens, retest at 6 mo 1 yr? Or is IFA positive final?

2006-08-28 Thread felv

That was what I thought, thus my note to people that they SHOULD be
retested later. Ok, thanks guys! Just wanted to be sure I was right. :)

So, next question, does an IFA indeed indicate the virus is in the bone
marrow, or is this lady just whacked? I thought the IFA, being a blood test,
wouldn't be much better to tell if it was in the marrow than any other test
(ELISA), as blood is blood. Wouldn't amarrow sample be needed to tell
anything about the marrow?I thought when it advanced to non-regenerative
anemia, THAT was what indicated it is in the bone marrow. So, how does one go
about determining if it IS in the bone marrow, other than the symptom of
non-regenerative anemia? Bone tap?

That sounds like a low Potassium level (or possibly a high Phosphorus
level, or both), yes, can be FELV associated (since FELV effects such a wide
range of bodily functions in various cats), as well as kidney, diabetes, or any
other number of related diseases in cats. Also seen in Heart problems, and of
course, can beNeurological as well.I'd get a blood panel done ASAP
and a full exam, including very closely listening to the heart.

2006-08-27 Thread felv

Good idea. I'd include a tube of Nutri-Cal http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=3177,
that's a high calorie supplement, I'd also consider several cans of his favorite
canned food, and a can of one of the many liquid diets on the market now like
CliniCare, Formula-V, or CatSure http://www.southernagriculture.com/southag/product.asp?dept_id=3028pf_id=PABBFKMPKIBH.
You need a bottle of PLAIN sterile saline, to flush wounds, eyes, or anything
really that is too sensitive for soap and water. You'll need a tube of eye
ointment http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=9674.
You'll want a roll of vet wrap http://www.kvvet.com/KVVet/product_family.asp?family%5Fid=203and
some gauze pads http://www.kvvet.com/KVVet/productr.asp?pf%5Fid=80180
, a tube of tissue glue http://www.kvvet.com/KVVet/productr.asp?pf%5Fid=86060
, and some form of syptic solution (to control bleeding) http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=6597
. I'd recommend Rescue Remedy, or some form of "happy drug" as well, for stress
http://www.bachflower.com/rescue_remedy.htm.
You'll want oral syringes, one 1 CC/ML, one 3 CC/ML, and one at least 15CC/ML
(for force feeding and medicating) http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=3393.
I'd recommend a cold pack, a heating pad, and it never hurts to have cat muzzle
and a body bag, in case of emergency and if you're alone and can't restrain him
on your own. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=3159

Re: Dilated left eye

2006-08-27 Thread felv

A head tilt and eye dilation means there's some kind of
neurological problem, usually, though it CAN happen with severe untreated ear
infections as well (more common in dogs than cats), and a few very rare
conditions I'd have to do a search for. You'd want to do a full neurological
exam to figure out the extent of the problem, and determine if it's affecting
quality of life. Many times there's no quality of life lost, so I don't know why
your vet would automatically euth on just that alone, maybe there was more you
were not aware of at the time.

waived we just want to see him saved. He can either be an only kitty, or
with other FeLV kitties, but has to be an indoor only cat. Please call or

Re: Question #4: Litter

2006-08-27 Thread felv

I use natural litters only now. I like Cedarific, Feline Fresh, World's
Best, and Swheat Scoop. The only non-clumping one I use is Cedarific, the rest
are all clumping. I have one cat that prefers non clumping. I use it for all my
boxes when I am busy, as it's VERY cheap, and I just change the whole box every
3 days, and do NOT scoop at all for the 3 days. Much easier than scooping daily
as must be done with the scoopables or they become one big clump that breaks up
and then ruins the entire box.

Re: Question #2: Grooming

2006-08-27 Thread felv

I use a grooming glove on all the shorthairs, once a week or so:
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=8251(the
one I own)
http://www.petfooddirect.com/store/product_detail.asp?pf%5Fid=110135701(a
different brand)

Miranda, my only longhair (a slightly double coated DLH with fine downy
fur), gets combed once a week (though it should be done every other day, I live
a busy life, and she gets neglected) with a medium shedding comb:
http://www.petco.com/Shop/Product.aspx?R=3733Nav=1N=0Ntt=shedding+combsku=771791(the
one I use)

I also occasionally, during prime shedding seasons, use a soft CAT slicker
on the thicker shorthairs (I would NEVER recommend using this on a fine coated
breed or one with no undercoat, like Siamese, Abyssinians, Orientals,
etc):
http://www.petco.com/Shop/petco_Product_R_1992_PC_productlist_Nav_203_N_23+102_cp_4_Nao_36_sku_848433_familyID_10275.aspx
(the one I have now, but don't really care for, as it's too clunky)
I used to own one that was called the "Tiny Tiger Cat Slicker", and it was
a MUCH better tool, more like this one, but I can't vouch for the hardness of
this one's pins:
http://www.petedge.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=72itemType=PRODUCTiMainCat=12iSubCat=27iSubSubCat=0iProductID=72

For a fine, short coat, a grooming glove and an occasional bath should be
all that is ever needed. I'd suggest a flea bath using a good flea shampoo every
late spring or summer, and a non-soap skin and coat moisturizing bath in the
winter. Some breeds require more frequent baths, such as Sphynx and Persians,
due to higher skin oil production. The shampoos I prefer over all others:

(flea shampoo)
http://www.petfooddirect.com/store/product1.asp?pf_id=11051034(the
best general and deodorizing shampoo)
http://www.episoothe.com/
(for itchy, irritated skin)
http://www.dvmpharmaceuticals.com/display.html?c=3fam=Relief%20Shampoo(for
itchy, flaky, dryskin, AND, get this, MY PERSONAL SHAMPOO, yes, for ME,
the HUMAN, it makes my hair look WONDERFUL combined with Aussie 3 minute miracle
deep conditioner)

Re: OT: Re: Question #4: Litter

2006-08-27 Thread felv

There's a product you spray (like spray paint) on the inside of your newly
cleaned and DRY cat pans that keeps the clumping litters from sticking. It's a
GREAT product, though I recommend spraying it OUTSIDE or with a window fan
pulling the air out, as it takes a LOT to cover the inside of several boxes.
It's called Stink Free Instantly:
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=1776

You just spray it on until it's got a nice white powdery coating on the
entire inside of the pan, use extra in the corners. (it helps to have tan or
beige colored boxes so you can see the coverage more)

Re: Question #7: Carriers

2006-08-27 Thread felv

I think the person who wrote that sounds like a moron. What the hell
difference does all that make, in her opinion? A cat that doesn't want to go
into a kennel isn't going to be any easier to get in from the top than from the
side, they have good claws, and a strong grip, and can splay their legs PLENTY
wide enough apart to foil any attempts at loading, if they so desire.
Ventilation on 4 sides is only required for international air travel, for common
use, 3 sides is plenty, most likely, one side will be up against the back of
your car seat anyways. And as for it being transparent, I've NEVER seen one
transparent, and I think the cats tend to hide in the BACK of the kennel for a
reason, because it's a place to HIDE, thus, a transparent kennel would make them
feel less secure, IMO.

My biggest suggestion is to get an intermediate sized kennel, so you can
put a small litterpan in it with your cat. I show an example on my products
page:
http://ucat.us/products.html

I've since come to realize that if you put the bedding in the BACK part of
the kennel, and the litterpan in the front, the water and food that splashes out
of the cage cups lands IN the litterbox, and causes no messes, plus, the cats
tend to lay in the litterpan if it's in the back because they like to be in the
back hiding. Just attach the cage cups up higher on the cage door, over the
litterpan, like 3/4 of the way up the bars. The cats can still access them if
they stand up that way, and can still dig in the box as well. To remove the cat,
just take the pan out, set it off to the side, and remove the cat. To reinsert
the cat, put the cat in, and then put the pan in after the cat.

Re: Question #8: Vets Neutering

2006-08-27 Thread felv

Just about any vet can handle a male cat neuter, it's a pretty basic thing.
I wouldn't worry too much. I'd be more concerned with the Purina is as good as
anything comment. Purina is junk, not worth feeding raccoons and skunks with,
IMO.

Re: Question #9: Flea Treatments

2006-08-27 Thread felv

I really am disappointed with the frontline plus topspot. The Frontline
SPRAY is much better, IMO (though if they groom themselves, they foam at the
mouth something terrible for the first few days after applying it!). Advantage
works well too, I think, I've had better success with it than with the Frontline
topspots. I prefer flea baths over harsh chemical sprays, personally. Zodiac
makes a really effective flea shampoo, if you follow the directions carefully,
it has to soak on the cat for 5 minutes, and you should go as high up on the
head as possible, and between every toe.

Re: Ordering interferon- Nina

2006-08-27 Thread felv

Get your own vet to make up a batch for you. All they have to do is order
one vial of the actual human drug InterferonAlpha, and then dilute it to the
correct dilution for cats, the instructions are available at the island pharmacy
website for other vets to use (or at least they used to be). You should be able
to have half prepared to full dilution, and have half stored in deep freeze for
future dilution and use.

Re: Question #2: Grooming

2006-08-27 Thread felv

I trim the spots that Miranda wont let me brush (the private parts). Most
vet offices can do a "sanitary clip" which removes the hair from the butt,
inside the rear legs, and up under the tail. A good conditioner may help in your
case, though I don't use them myself on my cats, I know many purebred people
swear by them for longhairs. MC could probably suggest a few good ones for
keeping the coat mat free, she's the Persian person on this group. OR, just go
join a Persian cat yahoogroup, and ask what they use. They are the hardest to
keep groomed breed, I believe, so if it works for them, it should work for you.

There are combs special made for breaking up mats, with blade type teeth
that cut through the mats. Search for matbreaker comb, or dematting comb. I
usually try to finger pick out the mats I find, if you are patient, you can
usually pluck at them and loosened them up and get them out without much hair
loss if they are new mats (less then 3 days old).

IFA kittens, retest at 6 mo 1 yr? Or is IFA positive final?

2006-08-27 Thread felv

Someone emailed me a couple of 10 week old FELV+ kittens to add to my
website. She says they were confirmed positive on IFA, and she said "so it's in
the bone marrow", and implied that retesting wont get any different results
later as the IFA is "final". I always thought kittens could throw the virus,
even if positive on IFA. So, what's the deal? Is an IFA result the final say, or
do these babies have a chance of throwing the virus with time? 10 weeks old is
awful young to throw in the towel, isn't it? I would suspect maternal antibodies
at this point, but would they show on IFA?

Re: advice re sedation for kitten on long trip

2006-08-26 Thread felv

DON'T do it, period. Provide a kennel big enough to put
a litter box in with the kitten (do NOT use clumping litter), and just let him
work it out. Sedation makes them carsick, and has side effects. It's not in any
way helpful, unless you have a cat that really freaks out and hyperventilates
and tries to kill himself, sedation is just not required or
recommended.

Re: Worms and Wormer Question

2006-08-26 Thread felv

I prefer Droncit or Drontal, as it gets tapeworms, in
addition to all the others too, where most other dewormers don't get the tape
worms. The two most common in cats are roundworms and tapeworms, but they can
get any type that dogs get, I believe. Hookworms, whipworms, etc.

Roundworms are the ones the puke up in piles and look
like spaghetti. Tape worms are the ones you see crawling out their butts that
look like white rice. Yummy, who wants some carbs now?! LOL!

Re: OT: Feline Acne, Pramoxine HCI shampoo

2006-08-18 Thread felv

I've been scrubbing his chin with Mythic's allergy shampoo, and it's
looking better. I dabbed some Bactine on it last night after I scrubbed it
because it was so open and looked painful (the Bactine has a numbing agent in
it). Scrubbed the feeder too, gonna buy some bleach and do it really good this
weekend though! He's never had a reaction to the plastic before, but yeah, I've
heard that too, that plastic causes acne. Hopefully it will clear up, because
he's IMPOSSIBLE to live with without an auto feeder, he MUST have food, 24/7, or
there's hell to pay! LOL! If worse comes to worse, I suppose I could wrap the
bowl part his chin touches with aluminum foil.

Call animal control, your cat was bitten, if you saw the dog's mouth on
her. They will take the dog, and quarantine it for rabies. That should make the
neighbor's think twice about letting their dog run loose! Hell, tell them the
dog snapped at YOU, if no one saw to deny it, who's gonna know otherwise?

I just got that, and considered fwding it myself, glad you did it! What a
sad situation. I just wrote to my pet food company, Natura Pet (they make
california natural, Innova and healthwise), asking them to donate food to the
middle east in the areas where the war is affecting the animals. If any of you
guys feel up to it, a quick note to your chosen pet food company could really
help the animals. Some places just don't THINK about donating, until someone
asks! All they can say is no, no harm in asking, I figure!

in her few days with you! What a wonderful little soul you had the short time of
knowing though, that she came into your life just to give you such pleasure, and
then was gone. Perhaps her visit was a message to you, telling you to find joy
in the little things we all take for granted in life, for their presence here
can be so short, and swift in passing! Certainly, I feel like I got an eye
opener out of your experience. Each day is precious, and we should all keep that
in mind throughout our lives, for it is all in passing.

I think you should go get the other one tomorrow...

Moogie fell in the bathtub with me on several occasions, Doobie's fallen in
once, and my Do-Dah fell in once too,LOL! They all seem to LOVE to drink
my dirty bath water, it's like "Yummy! Mommy juice!", or something. Never had
one fall in a toilet though. We have to keep the lid down anyways now-a-days,
since Doobie insists on pulling down everything from the shelf over the toilet,
especially rolls of toilet paper. After digging a few soggy, nasty, putrid full
rolls of toilet paper out of the bowl, it now stays DOWN!

Good luck with your new baby, the cough is probably nothing, maybe a slight
URI from the shelter, or even hairballs. Just to be safe, have your vet listen
for heart murmurs, and test for heartworms. Heart problems are a number 1 cause
of dry sounding coughs.

Well, it could be stomatitis, which brushing wont help. A vet visit would
be a good idea. Stomatitis is more common in FIV+ cats than in FELV+ cats. The
wonderful people on the FIVCATS2 group on yahoogroups would be a great source
for gum issue questions, they've all gone through it there.

Luckily, all my cats are blessed with good mouths, so I can't advise you much
on this
topic, no personal experience. Wouldn't Lysine be a good supplement for dental
concerns too?
My cats just LOVE these Feline Greenies treats, though I only give three at a

max per cat per day, because the DOG greenies have been causing intestinal
blockages
in dogs, so I don't want to take any chances:
