I can't even get anyone to hold on to a healthy kitten temporarily - all my
favors are called in long ago, and I've even having problems placing barn cats.
. We could start treatment, but this lady gets more attached to this cat by
the day and it really is not fair to her (or the cat) to put him through
treatment and then have him PTS. We have an FELV sanctuary, but unfortunately
they only take in cats when there is money to be made off them.

We did ship a cat to Best Friends once, but they do not always have room either.

Like I said, this list has always been my go-to resource for FELV cats and I
have found placement for every single one in the past.

It is possible he has a false positive, but as he is anemic and sick, I'm
leaning towards true +. Unfortunately as I said there is no one to hold him
for 6 weeks and if we put him back outside he will be dead in 6 weeks.

Hey folks, got an emergency with a possible FELV+ cat in Austin, Texas. He's
had one snap test (and that's with the felv/fiv/heartworm test, which we know
there are a lot of false +s with). There is no one to hold him for a
confirmatory IFA.

Someone wrote me asking for help, this is her description of him:

He is slated to be euthanized at 5pm today. This boy is very affectionate,
loving to be held, petted, scratched, etc. He was even purring while being
petted at the counter at the vet's office with all the strange scents and
animal noises going on!

He's pretty sick at the moment. Vet says he's extremely anemic. That's why he
hasn't been eating much. And the heat has exacerbated the problem since he's
been an outdoor cat. Vet also says the condition is treatable, but the
treatment makes him very infectious. So what he needs is an indoor home either
in a one-cat household or in a house where all the cats are feline leukemia
positive.

It's breaking my heart because he's such a sweetie. I'm hoping to find someone
who can provide a home for this baby so he won't have to be euthanized.

I've asked for pics etc

I also asked for an extra day which is hopefully being negotiated. I know
someone on this list has room for a wonderful survivor of this horrible Texas
heat and drought.

I've gotten some wonderful kitties placed as a result of this list (just ask
their moms) so am hoping we can pull a rabbit out of a hat one more time!

Please contact me off list about this kitty.

I would love to know exactly what condition is treatable and what treatment

in Austin, but in the area? It’s such a shame, because this cat may just

Hey folks, got an emergency with a possible FELV+ cat in Austin, Texas.
He's had one snap test (and that's with the felv/fiv/heartworm test, which
we know there are a lot of false +s with). There is no one to hold him for
 a confirmatory IFA.

That's why
he hasn't been eating much. And the heat has exacerbated the problem since
he's been an outdoor cat. Vet also says the condition is treatable, but the
treatment makes him very infectious. So what he needs is an indoor home
either in a one-cat household or in a house where all the cats are feline
 leukemia positive.

It's breaking my heart because he's such a sweetie. I'm hoping to find
someone who can provide a home for this baby so he won't have to be
 euthanized.

 I've asked for pics etc

I also asked for an extra day which is hopefully being negotiated. I know
someone on this list has room for a wonderful survivor of this horrible
 Texas heat and drought.

I've gotten some wonderful kitties placed as a result of this list (just
ask their moms) so am hoping we can pull a rabbit out of a hat one more
 time!

sick and anemic from the FELV, but you never know, could just have

that you cant find anyone in your area to hold the cat for the 6 weeks but
please DON'T try and put down sanctuaries.  We like any rescue look for
donations and the good will of people to help us help the animals. Yes almost
all sanctuaries that take an animal for life ask for fees( some more than
others) but your talking the care and vetting for what could be 10 or so years
and with FeLV that can get really expensive.

tens of thousands of dollars in donations and she does it, in MY opinion, in

By the way, are you willing to take him?:)

The prblem with rescue groups right now, is that with people loosing jobs and
homes, there is no more room. We have 3 groups within driving distance here
and they and their fosters are all full up. They have had to turn animals away
because they do not have enough room or people to care for them. That is one
reason why I am hoping to build an outdoor shelter, I could take in more cats
then. Right now, I am full up with 7 indoor/outdoor cats. Can't really afford
to feed and buy litter for more.

Hey folks, got an emergency with a possible FELV+ cat in Austin, Texas.
He's had one snap test (and that's with the felv/fiv/heartworm test, which
we know there are a lot of false +s with). There is no one to hold him for
  a confirmatory IFA.

That's why
he hasn't been eating much.

I've gotten some wonderful kitties placed as a result of this list (just
ask their moms) so am hoping we can pull a rabbit out of a hat one more
  time!

Kelley, do you have any personal friends whom you might call on for a big

Austin, but in the area? It’s such a shame, because this cat may just have had
a false positive…..

There are many, many rescue groups around Austin, but none who will take an

gotten lucky.:)

That's why I'm here begging...I have bought him til Monday and this whole thing
is really tearing up the feeder. She cries every time she goes to the vet. If
worst comes to worst I will go with her Monday to have him pts. Lets not make
me have to do that!

Re: [Felvtalk] FELV+ Emergency in Austin, TX

2011-08-19 Thread Kelley Saveika
Hey all,

I was unable to get a picture - this is what the finder said:

Argh! I went down to the vet immediately after getting your email to take a
picture. The camera looked like it was working, but when i got home the
directory was corrupted and the pictures unreadable. He is almost solid
black. There's a tiny white patch on his chest. He has green eyes, short
hair, and is medium sized for a tomcat. He is extremely thin. There are big
hollows behind his rib cage. And it seems a little uncomfortable for him
when I run my hand down over his bony hips. I got him to the vet because he
looked like he was starving to death in spite of the dry and wet food I was
providing. And honestly, he was.

I spent about half an hour visiting with the cat. He is about 100% better
after 2 days in the a/c eating Fancy Feast. When I brought him to the vet,
his meows were barely audible and he did not twitch his tail. His eyes were
full of wet matter and he wasn't grooming. Today he seems like he may be a
bit of a talker. When I spoke to him, he often replied. His tail was very
communicative. While his eyes are still a little runny, he was cleaning his
face and keeping the mess to a minimum. And while he wasn't unnecessarily
vocal, if I got up to leave before he was done being petted, he was most
vociferous. :) Cheered my heart to see the improvement. Also, I witnessed
him grooming. He did seem to get a bit tired after 20 minutes or so and was
content to just sit beside me and stretch out.

The vet agreed to keep him one more night. They close at noon tomorrow.
Hopefully we can find him a home before then. Thank you all for your help.

Come on guys, I know someone wants a scrappy tomcat who's down on his luck -
remember he may not even be FELV+! (probably with the anemia he is, but we
don't know for sure!)

I can transport or meet in the middle if a reasonable driving range from
TX. If not maybe we can set up a transport, but someone's got to step
forward for him.
