[Felvtalk] Vaccine induced cancer - more info.

2011-09-10 Thread Georgetta Brickey

Hi list,

Here are a couple of links I found by googling.

The first one has a lot of info and includes a chart identifying where to
inject which vaccine on a cat.
http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=AA=526

This one has some general information on the subject. Both UC Davis and
Cornell University have extensive information too.

http://maxshouse.com/vaccine_induced_sarcoma.htm

Here is the Cornell one. http://www.vet.cornell.edu/fhc/brochures/vaccsarc.html

Here is a Wiki one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaccine-associated_sarcoma

Hope you find this helpful.

Re: [Felvtalk] Vaccine

2010-04-06 Thread MaryChristine
the injection-site sarcoma issue has largely been eliminated by the removal
of the adjuvent, the change in placement of the vaccine, and the advent of
safer inoculations, and non-injecting manners of delivery.

if you're NEVER going to bring another cat into your house, EVER, then i'd
say, don't vaccinate. but if you are, i'd do the full initial series--which,
personally, i think is effective for life, too, tho research hasn't been
done to confim this. even with that research, that's how vaccines SHOULD
work in all species, plus there's lots of anecdotal evidence of negatives
living with positives for years without getting regular vaccinations never
getting sick.

remember, again, that cats who test negative CAN, indeed, retest positive
later on--doesn't mean they were negative at all, just that they were tested
before the viral exposure was registering on the test. there are no cases of
TRULY positive cats (tested twice, with the second test long enough after
the first to remove the possibility of a reaction to exposure.) it's
horrible when it happens, but it happens very infrequently.

there is absolutely no research that i've seen that says that vaccinating a
positive stresses its immune system out, because until the virus is
activated, FeLVs are not frail, compromised creatures walking around with
smelling salts and hankies. in fact, there is anecdotal evidence from
members of this list that vaccinating positives STRENGTHENS their immune
response, as evidenced by their seeming to have much longer life spans than
positives who are not vaccinated

we just have to convince some researchers to follow up on that, and good
luck with that.

We always give the initial series of FELV vaccinations to all cats we adopt
out.
MC is right, as usual. My old vet said he had NEVER seen a case of sarcoma
he felt was caused by a vaccine, but he had seen plenty of cats with FELV.

Many vets don't recommend them for indoor cats because of the problem with
vaccine-site sarcomas. I think you should always get them at least their 1st

A friend who lives in the Wash. DC area just told me her
vet no longer recommends vaccines for FelV. In her case,
she had a cat she adopted who was FelV pos. and he died
at 18 months of age. She had her other two cats vaccinated
last year when she found out he was pos. and when she went
to get their annual FelV boosters she was told they don't
recommend them. I'm not sure if this means just the boosters
or any FelV shots.

Have any of you heard anything about this?

HI Lorrie,

Here is a link to recommendations for core vaccines as well as vaccinations
for cat at risk of exposure to FELV.
http://www.catvets.com/uploads/PDF/FINALVaccineTable12.15.pdf. FeLV is not a
core vaccination but for cats at risk it is Still an annual booster. Due to
the economic situation I have not continued this vaccination. I do not have
any positives and the cats I have were mixed. My is natural immunity in
these cats. These are my opinions.

Now that being said many vets think giving a FELV vaccination to a positive
cat can overload the immune
system and therefore do not recommend this. If I am reading you correctly
the cat is already positive. Hope this helps.

Silver is one of these cats and joined my crew after my initial panic over
the FELV outbreak. He had a canine tooth cut off yesterday because he broke
it and it was sideways in his mouth. Seems he has feline resorptive lesion.
He has always had bad breath. He was abanoned in my neighborhood and
starving when I found him. The vet said he was missing other teeth as well.
He is fat and happy now. For some reason when I lose a cat another one shows
up to take it's place. I had lost two cats to this disease when he found my
porch and was no longer intimidated by Ittle Bitty.

No her cat who was positive died and the two she has left are
negative, and inside only cats. She called about annual boosters for
them, and her vet told her he didn't recommend the annual booster. I
haven't checked with my own vet yet. My own cats are inside/outside
cats and all originally tested negative, but because of going outside
they may still need annual FelV vaccinations.

I have 10 cats and had I had 11 when the outbreak occurred. Of those cats,
the ones who had one vaccination given by me did not become infected. Part
of that would be bc of natural immunity and part i believe is bc the
original vaccine gave them immunity. Those shots were given 6 or 7 years
before I got a sick cat from a shelter who in turn sickened some of my
recent additions. Since then I still have these same three cats they are all
older now. I feel good about that.

This did not hold true in my case. Tiny was 5 and Junior was 4. Junior had
tested negative earlier in the year and turned positive. Daisy on the other
hand was a kitten and was a love bug to Lionel, the cat who was brought from
the same shelter.I belive he was the source cause he had a URI and tested
positive for FIV and FELV. She has never been sick. She was probably 10
weeks old and repeatedly exposed for months to him when Pumpkin died from
this. That is how I found out what was going on and tested all the cats. I
lost 4 in total. Junior lived the longest just over two years from testing
positive. He was very symptomatic.

Re: [Felvtalk] vaccine

2009-02-04 Thread Lynne
She got her rabies vaccine at the same time so I guess I can't determine
which is causing the problem. The vet checked her over and decided she was
fine today, although he couldn't find the site of the injections as he
wasn't the one who gave them to her and being a persian it's difficult to
see anything through all that hair. I just hope this resolves. I'm
reluctant now to have our newest girl immunized. Both are indoor cats but
having lost our baby Boo last March to feline leukemia and FIV I was afraid
to not have them vaccinated.

I have never had problems with the FELV vaccine but we did have a cat
contract Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia as the result of either a rabies or
distemper shot (he got both at the same time).

Re: [Felvtalk] vaccine

2009-02-04 Thread Laurieskatz
Squeaky used to react to the vaccine each time. He would be lethargic for 3
days.
One day my vet tested him and found he was positive. Both he and Stripes
tested positive that day. The vet determined Squeaky was a carrier and
carried the disease in his bone marrow. He was never sick until his final 3
weeks. He lived to age 22. I adopted the boys in 1983.The boys were tested
in 1985...years before I knew much about all of this. Stripes died in 1989.
He was 16.

Coco has reacted to her last 2 rabies vaccinations. I will never vaccinate
her for rabies again.
