In fact, the same problem exists with the FIP - if used on cats, they will test as if they had it! Lynda, I recently had 2 of my cats vax'd for felv...make sure the vax doesn't have an adjuvant...they are known to possibly cause a sarcoma at the injection site...The brand was Merial, and it is 'PUREVAX Recombinant Leukemia Vaccine and the VET *JET* transdermal. I have one cat who has reactions to the vax, so I am particularly careful about vaccines (he does not get the shots anymore, but the others do). I found this on vetinfo.com (see below). My vet uses the vaccine from Pfizer. I don't know what the difference is or if there is any. There are different manufacturers for the leukemia vaccines such as Pfizer, Fort Dodge and Merial. There is no evidence of the FELV vaccine causing a cat to turn FELV positive. There is truth however to the FIV vaccine causing cats to test positive. Hi, Gloria, Let me get this straightYour vet vaccinated FelV positive cats with the FelV vaccine to deal with FelV. I understood that once a cat was FelV positive the vaccine was not going to change it's status, and the cat would still remain positive. Does anyone else know anything about this? At the clinic where I work we only usually give positive cats the distemper portion. The FELV portion is of no value good or bad to a positive cat. In fact it is yet another vaccine component the cats body must deal with. Hope this heps. Well, not exactly - what actually happened was I obtained 2 cats from a lady in Oklahoma, and she was a vet tech. She knew they were FELV positive, and had them for several years. HER VET (not mine) had vaccinated them for FELV regularly, and believed that it was helpful to FELV cats. I took the cats (here in Arkansas) when she had a family problem and couldn't keep the cats. I have not continued the FELV vaccinations. The cats are fine. Actually we took 4 cats - kind of long story, but they first went to a rescue in Missouri, for a few weeks, and then we got them in Arkansas. One cat died (fatty liver - hepatic lipidosis, as I recall). Another cat died after I was gone on vacation for 2 weeks (stress perhaps?). The other two remaining cats have continued to prosper. I haven't had them tested or vaccinated since I got them.I've had them for a few years, have to check when I got them. My understanding is that the vaccine is 85-90% effective. We vaccinate all our rescue cats, and I vaccinate all my personal cats. You will find others on this list who do not vaccinate at all. My vet said that the vaccine is 90+% effective and that the likelihood of my other six adult, healthy cats getting leukemia was extremely small. At this time, Mandy is very healthy (just at vet today) and the other six are fine. They have mixed without restriction all of this time. My vet said that the vaccine is 90+% effective and that the likelihood of my other six adult, healthy cats getting leukemia was extremely small. In my opinion, one needs to look at all of the factors before deciding whether or not to vaccinate. 1) Vaccine efficacy. I have heard anywhere from 30% to 70% efficacy, but I can't find anything online that says anything concrete. 2) Animal's risk of exposure. Adult cats are less susceptible to contracting FeLV than kittens. the degree of virus exposure sufficient to infect 100% of young kittens will infect only 30% or fewer adults. There are some potentially serious side effects from the leukemia vaccine that need to be taken into consideration when deciding to vaccinate a cat. Adverse effects from vaccination can include local swelling or pain, transient lethargy or fever, post-vaccination granuloma formation (a gathering of inflammatory cells that cause a benign lump), and most seriously, *vaccine associated sarcomas.*http://www.catvaccines.com/sarcomas.htmA sarcoma is a type of a mass that is comprised of cancerous cells. Sarcomas can spread from the site of the injection down into surrounding connective tissue, muscle, and bone. Although sarcomas have been reported from vaccines other than the feline leukemia virus (rabies is thought to be associated with possible sarcoma formation), current scientific research links sarcoma formation most often with feline leukemia vaccination.
