Re: [Felvtalk] Harley is in the hospital

2014-12-17 Thread Margo

I'm very glad to hear Harley is doing so well. Hoping he'll be home tomorrow.

With my Vet's approval, I keep famciclovir on hand for possible herpes flares,
and have had great results from it. I use the NOW lysine powder, and the cats
don't seem to notice it in their food, wet or dry. This seems to be the
cheapest currently, but I'm often able to add it to other orders I place, so I
keep my eyes open :)

Deb, the crazy thing is that symptoms can be variable. I have been
wracking my brain and talking to the vet, and one thing that looks like
a possibility now is that Brock, the FeLV+ cat I adopted 2.5 months ago,
may be a carrier of whatever URI virus it is. This all seemed to start
(but could be coincidence) when our weather got weird here. Big
temperature inversion, poor air quality, temps 20 degrees above normal,
fog/mist/drizzle for a week. Brock was a little sneezy, but no other
symptoms. Harley has *never* been sick before, in the 4+ years he's
been with me. I am thinking maybe the odd weather threw them for a
loop, and the virus flared up in Brock, and Harley got it from him. But
Brock, being younger, and not as far along in immune suppression, had
such mild symptoms that I didn't think it was a URI, just maybe some
dust made him sneeze. But that's all just a theory. In any case, I
think I better get those lysine chews or the capsules, since they
wouldn't eat the gel. Don't know for sure if this is herpes virus, but
could be, especially since I just read that can cause pharyngitis. And
I believe that's what the lysine is supposed to help the most, is FHV.

a little younger than Harley, so maybe the FeLV hasn't done as much

Just came back from visiting with Harley. Definitely seems to be some
kind of upper respiratory virus. The swelling in his larynx seems to be
better, but now he has some nasal discharge. I reached for a kleenex,
and the tech said, never mind, he just ate it. He is interested in
food now, but it's hard for him to eat with the e-collar on, and maybe
there is some sinus pressure too when he leans forward. His energy
level is good, as is his interest in getting into anything he can get
his paws on (he was allowed out of his cage while I was with him in the
isolation room). I had to keep a close eye on him so he didn't scatter
medical supplies all over the room. He's staying one more night, and
I'll take him home tomorrow if all looks good. Next week I bring him
back to get another echocardiogram to check his heart. The followup
costs less than half what the first one costs, thankfully.

I suppose all of us in this this group are always alert for a sign of illness
in our cats .

Even a sneeze a cough is a big thing for us .

As we all know that our felines that we love so much are so delicate and even
a simple flu can take them from us .

Keep us informed on Harley

Hopefully he will be home tomorrow

Harley's condition has remained the same overnight, with the addition of
one episode of vomiting some froth. A critical care specialist is
taking turnover from the overnight vet now, and will be discussing with
me this morning what kind of imaging or tests might narrow things down.
Tracheal wash was mentioned yesterday, but currently I am getting the
sense this is not URI, so may not go that route. Possibly a CT scan.

I don't feel that Harley would be able to swallow any kind of salve or
tonic, so not an option now. Meds would have to be IV, which is only
going to be something the vet hospital has and approves.

because of his throat. I brought him a couple of toys from home. I'm
not really expecting him to play, but it's something familiar and
hopefully comforting. No catnip due to concern for his airway!

He had an echocardiogram early this afternoon, and then an NG tube was
put in for feeding. The Dr. said his larnyx area was very swollen and
inflamed, and the echo showed his heart's right ventricle is thicker
than it should be. They added an antiobiotic that will cover more
possibilities (zithro), like if the main issue is fungal rather than
bacterial. Might be adding a steroid also, but I think that's for
tomorrow. So far no obvious masses, but there is an inflammatory
process going on, mainly in Harley's larnyx and bronchial area. There
is still the possibility of early lymphoma, or an off chance of a
heartworm. Mainly, it's wait and see for the next 24 hours.

Note: The echocardiogram was recommended due to concern of an enlarged
heart seen on Harley's x-ray.

Glad to hear Harley is purring and affectionate. I take that as a good sign.

I hadn’t heard of ECGs for cats, but it makes sense. It’s a good non-invasive
test for heart concerns. Sounds like that’s not the issue, though.

I hope Harley is even more improved tomorrow.

I've had echocardiograms (or cardiac ultrasound, if you prefer) on 2
cats before due to cardiomyopathy. One that had cardiomyopathy (caused
by undiagnosed hyperthyroidism), and then another to check the heart
*after* they were diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. The Dr. said it was
unusual for the right ventricle to be thickened, so first they checked
for pulmonary hypertension - all clear there. Still, something has
caused it, so that will be looked at more after the infection/swelling
has subsided and Harley is eating on his own again. Just hope that this
doesn't turn out to be one of the many ways that lymphoma can rear its
ugly head.

Do you mean lymphoma? Lymphocytes where it starts can be most anywhere
in the body, so there can be different symptoms. I have had 3 cats that
had lymphoma. 1 was FeLV+, the other 2 were negative. I even had the
negative ones tested for FeLV after they were diagnosed with lymphoma,
just because it is such a common outcome among FeLV+ cats.

No, he doesn't go outside, but I am now worried that the bag of DRY
leaves I brought them to play in, might have been a potential source of
spores. We have also had unseasonably warm weather plus a week of
fog/mist/drizzle, big temperature inversion that caused air quality
alerts. There is outside air that comes in through the soffit and
rafters. But my other FeLV+ cat is fine, though he did sneeze a bit
yesterday. No discharge from his nose, his appetite is fine. But he is
a little younger than Harley, so maybe the FeLV hasn't done as much
damage to his immune cells yet. The occasional mouse gets inside (I
live in the country) too, and Harley is quite good at catching them. I
sometimes give him wormer or Frontline Plus, because of that.

Marshazas

Sorry, Oona just stepped on the keyboard. She is FeLV negative, guess
she thinks the positive boys have been taking too much attention away
from her. ;-)

I would say get an ultrasound at least. have they done a complete profile?
I would also suggest a tonic that I have been taking since it is internal. I
also use a salve for external tumors. I had perpherial t cell lymphoma. Went
thru 4 courses of chemo which did nothing but try to kill me and left me
getting 2 units of blood th last 4 chemos. Dr. stopped last one because it was
killing me. 1 year later i went into spontaneous remission and have been there
for over 8 years. I have been using the salve on an area that had 3 tumors
over the bone and radiation. I lost circulationin my right foot. Started
useing the salve and it hurt like hell (unlike most cancers) for a couple of
days, but now I have circulation in that leg and my foot is normal, not
swollen. There are many people who have used the salve and tonic for
themselves and their pets and seen great results. If you like, I could put you
in touch with Pat. This has never caused any side effects and as far as I am
concerned is worth the pain I had for a couple of days. Dorlis
