Subject: URGENT NEED - Neutered Male FIV Cat Needs Home

Hi,

I had been feeding a stray cat (Chester) all winter, trapped him on 2/15/09,
and had him neutered, tested for FELV/FIV, vaccinated, and meds applied to
rid him of fleas and worms at the local SPCA. He tested positive at the
SPCA for FIV only. They released him to me and I took him to my vet, where
he has been since Tuesday, 02/24/09.

My vet gave him a complete physical exam and blood analysis and also
retested him for FIV using Western Blot I think as well as the IDEXX SNAP
Antigen test again. Chester is FIV positive. Vet said that he is a
healthy cat and his blood work was otherwise squeaky clean - no infections
or problems.

FIV cats can only transmit the virus to other cats by a bite wound or
scratch that draws blood. FIV cannot be transmitted to humans or to other
animals. Nevertheless, he must be in a one cat home or in a home with only
FIV cats, and he must be kept indoors to avoid contact with other cats and
to minimize exposure to germs that can compromise his immune system. FIV
cats can live a full lifespan with proper nutrition and vet care, as with
all cats.

Chester needs a home ASAP because he can no longer be boarded at the vet
inasmuch as they only do medical boarding and Chester will have no place to
go as of Monday, 03/02/09. If that happens, he may have to be put to death
because (1) he has been use to being fed for two months now and to put him
out without food would be very cruel - I cannot continue to feed him because
of complaints to my apartment manager and it is against the town's law and
the animal control officer is aware of it, plus (2) Chester should not be
allowed to come in contact with non-FIV cats, of which there are several
pets let out by their owners in this apt complex.

Chester is not feral, but needs socialization; he allowed my vet to pet and
stroke him. The vet picked him up, however, Chester was tense, but not
aggressive - just scared. Chester is probably about 3-4 years old, black and
white, green eyes, and adorable. Please help if you can. Time is really
getting short inasmuch as I have to pick him up from my vet on Monday,
03/02/09 and still have no home for him and no place to go.

Chester is located in Red Bank, NJ (Jersey Shore area)

Thanks, as always, MC! And of course it's not at all true, that he
can't mix with other cats, just the old party line. Darn, be glad
when the vets grow out of that.
