Hmmm. Only 10 cats listed for adoption on their petfinder site. And only one
of those, an FIV+ boy, is listed as special needs.

This also makes me suspicious about the long term viability of the place. You
have to be committed to finding homes for the cats. They need human families,
attention, and they won't get that in a giant sanctuary setting. And if you're
not focused on adoptions, you have to strictly limit your intake to avoid
becoming overwhelmed.

Never heard of them.

According to their website they've only been around since 2005. Lots-of-cats
in a rural setting always makes me nervous. And, whoa! They want a $5000
surrender fee for a healthy cat and $7500 to take in an FIV or FeLV cat. I
guess that's one way to make sure you don't wind up with too many animals.

 Sanctuary

I live in Central New Jersey and I have a cat that showed up on my doorstep
about 10 months ago. He is so super friendly that my husband and I decided
that we wanted to take him in as one of our own. We took him to the vet
about 3 weeks ago and he tested positive for Leukemia. We were heartbroken.
We cannot take him inside due to the fact that we have 2 healthy cats
 inside already.

The vet said that he is about 2-3 years old and in good health with the
exception of testing positive for Leukemia. (by the way - he did test
negative for HIV and he has been neutered) He is the sweetest cat and just
wants to be petted and loved and talked to. I was out back the other back in
my lounge chair and he jumped up onto my chest and wanted me to pet him,
which of course I did. He is also very friendly with the neighbor children.

I would love to find a safe place for him where he can get some interaction
with humans as well as other cats. We have a few other cats that we feed
outside and he seems to get along well with them.

I need to find a safe place for him where he will be loved and cared for.
We really need your help!!! Any information in the New Jersey, New York and
 Pennsylvania area will be helpful.

 Thanks!

I wouldn't say having only 10 cats listed for adoption is necessarily
suspicious. It is - at least partly - a sanctuary and not an adoption
center. If I paid from five to ten thousand to get a cat in there, I would
probably expect he is going to stay for life, why else would I pay that kind
of money? It doesn't appear to be so huge that the cats wouldn't get any
individual attention. Overcrowding is much less like when the entry fee is
that high.

This doesn't mean it is a good place, we just don't know. Do we have anyone

most sanctuaries are just that: they are sanctuaries, for unwanted cats, and
do NOT have active adoption programs. if the cats were easily adoptable,
well..

it's too easy to forget that sanctuaries are NOT shelter where the public is
welcome to wander around whenever they'd like: sanctuary is HOME, to the
cats who may never have known one, and to the humans who keep them company.

that seems like a VERY VERY high donation, especially considering how upset
some folks got with the $500 requested for snowball just recently!!!

the other thing is that most FeLVs and FIVs are NOT coming from families,
they are coming from shelters and rescues--maybe the high fee is to balance
out those who have no families? (why does this feel like another chapter in
the health-care debate, i wonder?)

actually, almost NO ONE ever saw angel wings: people bringing cats there
were met off-property. i know many folks who brought cats there, and only
know of one person who was actually allowed to see the main property (of two
or three) where the cats were.

and there's still questions about whether tiger ranch was anything other
than she claimed it to be: a last resort. lots of politics involved in
THAT one.

i think that most people who would pay that sum of money are doing so to
ensure the cat's comfort--and i doubt that normal folk would even consider
that a FeLV might ever find a home.

Perhaps, it is just a different way of looking at a situation. If I paid
that kind of money to place my cat there I would expect them to move heaven
and earth to care for that cat for the rest of its life. That is, in fact,
just what people are doing and I think it would be a breach of contract for
someone who was paid 5 to 10 thousand to care for a cat for life, to adopt
it out to someone else that has no contractual obligation to me.

As MC said, it is a sanctuary, not a shelter. If I had 5 to 10 thousand to
place a cat there, I would definitely be flying there to see the place,
getting references from others, vet references, etc., etc.

2009-08-24 Thread Amy Dalgliesh
The way I read it is they take in cats that are in dire straights and have made
provisions for FeLV's and FIV's.  It looks to me like they ask for the large
donations if you have a pet for which you want them to take
over responsibility. I agree with Gary, that if people pay that amount for
lifetime care, they're not apt to want their cat adopted out.  I think this fee
takes care of a couple of issues for the sanctuary, it keeps the numbers of
owner forfeitures down and the money they do get covers costs so the expense
doesn't cut into the rescue end.  They also have a vet on staff and a low cost
spay neuter clinic that is open to the public.  It looks pretty impressive.
That said, I would still have to check it out myself before any of mine went
there (or anywhere for that matter).  Of course, I'd have to win the lotto also.

you could try angel's gate, they have a place in long island, but also one in
upstate near delhi (they were willing to take a feluk cat I was trying to find
a home for, but in the end I kept him due to medical issues and anxiety)  that
was about two years ago so I dont know if they are still up and running.  I
emailed them through their website.  Also another sanctuary is called love and
hope in upstate new york they have a website (google love and hope sanctuary
new york) i think you will find it through there.  good luck!Jeni

I need  to find a safe place for him where he will be loved and cared
for.   We really need your help!!!  Any information in the New Jersey, New
York and Pennsylvania area will be helpful.

 Thanks!

2009-08-19 Thread Gloria B. Lane
Well, that's so gratifying that you're trying to help this sweet
kitty. You might try Tabby's place in NJ - http://
www.tabbysplace.org/. Even if they can't take, they might have
suggestions. I'm sure there are other options from other members of
this group. Of course the vets are more paranoid about it, but I do
understand your caution.

However some of us do mix our + and our - FELV cats. Also, I have a
friend locally with an FELV + cat, and one FELV- (indoors of course).
We recommended that she give the FELV+ cat a daily low dose oral
interferon, and both kitties are still alive and happy after 4 years -
one is still + and the other still -.

Best of luck,

Gloria

Re: [Felvtalk] Urgent! FeLV cat -New Jersey- I need to find him a Sanctuary

2009-08-19 Thread MaryChristine
70% of adult cats can be exposed and throw off the virus, and the current
vaccines are over 90% effective--get your other cats vaccinated, and they
will be safe. there are NO cases of a true negative cat who is vaccinated
ever turning positive from living with a true positive. to make sure your
kitty really is positive, ask your vet to do an IFA test. i'm presuming he's
been living outdoors all this time, so he probably was first exposed awhile
ago.

even unvaccinated cats rarely turn positive, as many folks who had positives
BEFORE there was a reliable vaccine can attest--this is just NOT a virus
that is easily transmitted nor contracted. (everyone remember mari,
spiritcat, from her days posting on this link--she's had FeLVs with her
clowder for over 30 years now, long before vaccination was common--and like
most folks, never had a problem. and my household was definitely exposed by
a lovely girl who'd tested negative at the shelter--that retesting issue
again--and tho there were frail elders and 3-month-old kittens in the mix,
it's been nine years without any FeLV showing up!)

they are now finding that some of the cats who remain testing positive NEVER
get sick, and are not contagious--remember that all the theories about
carriers, and WHEN a cat is actually contagious, are just that: THEORIES
that make sense, but might not stand up to research. we don't KNOW that
positives who stay healthy are contagious while they're healthy--and this
latest research is showing that to be the case.

a healthy cat is a healthy cat, FeLV or not. one that is as friendly as this
one is deserves a home, not a sanctuary setting.

there are a number of places for posting positives if you really feel you
must rehome him; get photos, and we can give you the names of other lists.

In PA you can try looking up the best little cat house in
Pennsylvania if you decide not to keep him. They take in FELV+ cats I believe.
Good luck to you.
