  Dear Rachel,

I am so, so sorry about your loss of Mr. Dobbs.  I can't imagine the
shock you must be feeling.  I do know, however, that he knows how
much you love him & that he is grateful that he got to leave this world
from a home where he was loved, even if it was only for a short time.
  Take care.

You are looking at this all wrong.  He was
loved and he knew who loved him and wanted to be loved by you.  This is not
bad.  He knew with all his being that you were near.  He was not
alone.  First, he had his angels with him and secondly he had someone who
loved him near.  Your body may not have been in the same room or even
the same house but he knew you were close and that your heart was with
him.  Our hearts are always with those we love, even when our bodies are
not.  Mr. Dobbs left this world with his angels and with total love.
He was warm, sheltered, fed, and, being redundant, loved.   An
awful lot of people never know all of these things.  He would not have
awakened you and there was nothing more you could do for him.  He taught
you not to take things on appearance, much like the Royal Princess Kitty Katt
taught me.  Just because someone looks wonderfully healthy or terribly sick
does not mean that is the true situation.  Life ends suddenly.  None
of us really knows when it will end.  We have to learn to live daily
and to accept that things simply are not as they appear all the time.
Do not beat yourself up.  Mr. Dobbs would be very upset with you and
feel he had failed to teach you the lesson he was sent to teach.

Be gentle with yourself and look at all you did for
him.

If you have men who will exclude any of God's
creatures
from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who

will deal likewise with their fellow
man.

Thank you all for the kind words.  It is still such a shock for me
and I'm sick that he died alone.  I just hate that.  I wish I
had slept in that room with him, there is a daybed in there, perhaps he would
have woken me up and let me know something was wrong.

I questioned the vaccinations also, wondering if that could have been a
possibility.  Normally, in rescue, we don't vaccinate the same day we do
surgery and I'm not a fan of combo vaccinations or vaccinating for Rabies at
the same time of other vaccines.  The vet comped the surgery and all
vaccinations, so I wasn't going to turn her down.  Though he had FIV, he
clearly seemed healthy and asymptomatic.  I just pray it was fast and
painless for him.  I doubt I'll ever get over that he passed lying
at the door waiting for me to come back in and give him some more love.

Thank you again for being so supportive.  On a positive note, I just
read the message regarding the person looking for a FIV+ cat and that someone
adopted one out to them, so that is very positive to read.  And I heard
from a recent adopter of 3 of our FeLV+ 12 week old kittens that they are
thriving and gaining weight and adjusting very well in their new home.
