Nonie is the name

2007-04-10 Thread Melissa Lind
Hi all, I know that my third rescue cat in a week was not FeLV+, but I just
thought I'd let you know that she has a name! She must have let the girls at
the vet's office know her name this weekend-Nonie is what they've named her,
and it fits! What a relief for me as I just couldn't find the right name!
I'm working on putting out flyers now in case she is somebody's baby. But,
for now, she and Ashley are getting to know each other in the garage. I
think Ashley was a little upset that her home was being invaded! But, I hope
they'll become snuggle-buddies in a few days. For now I'll keep an eye on
them since Ashley is scrawny and Nonie is strong. But, Ashley seems to be
standing her ground-not giving up her comfy bed!

A side note, Cassidy, our FeLV+, almost escaped out the window just now! I
was busy typing, not paying attention, and he had clawed a hole in the
screen and was half-way out! Good thing he didn't do that when I was gone.
And luckily he didn't get hurt or scratched by the screen-it's old and soft.
I could have lost him for good, and who knows how many other cats he could
have infected! The bad news is that now I can't open the window in here-and
it's super stinky as I've mentioned before-that's probably why he wanted
out! I'm working on integrating the crystal litter-it's clearly just the
hormones left over-a very distinct tom-cat smell. He has no trouble peeing
like my other cat has had with a UTI; plus the food I feed them is designed
to neutralize (I think that's the word the vet used) their urine to prevent
UTIs, which my Bandit is very prone to-or more to the point, his urine turns
crystal-like and blocks up. This food prevents that (but doesn't treat it).
He hasn't had any problems since the new food was introduced. My vet's
office said the same thing as several of you did-it'll take probably 4 weeks
for the smell to subside. Lucky me! But, now, poor Cassidy can't hear the
birds or smell the fresh air! Even if I get the screen replaced, he'll still
be able to chew through it! Any advice for indestructible screens? The poor
guy is so used to being outside, he just wants to go chase the birdies,
bunnies, squirrels! I've tried to tell him that it's best for him to be
inside, but he just doesn't listen!

I'm glad Cassidy didn't get to make a break for it! But, can't you open
the window just a crack, prop it with a little piece of wood or
something, just to let the air and birdsong in, but not enough for
Cassidy to get to the screen? We do that all the time around here. Oh,
and welcome Nonie, what a cute name.

For cat proof screens you can use the protective grates they sell for
the bottom half of screen doors. You could also buy a sheet of plastic
lattice and cut to fit the opening of the window. If the lattice
prevents the window from closing you could use double stick velcro and
place the lattice over the screen when the window is open.

Welcome Nonie!

You had previously TRUSTED normal window screens?! No, they are totally NOT
cat-safe. What I have done is use chicken wire to cover my windows. If
you're not too high class or part of a fancy community, you can use a staple
gun (the large, construction type, not a office stapler - or use U nails or
U tacks with a hammer) and just tack it right onto the frames (inside is
better than outside, as the cat is pushing against the frame that way, not
just against the wire and staples). You can trim it to size with wire nips,
but be sure to cut it close, so there's not little sharp wire points to get
hurt on. OR, if you have any carpentry skills, you can build your own
chicken wire frames, just sandwich a sheet of wire between to wood frames,
and screw them together. I hang these by attaching them at the top of the
window frame (inside the house) with 3 hinges, so they can be swung up to
open and close the window, then I set two screws into the side of the window
frame on either side, and loop fabric hair ties (you know, hair rubber
bands) through the wire on either side of the wire screen, and then loop
those over the side screws to make it so the cats can't swing the frame open
themselves. I have a picture that kinda shows part of it, if you want to see
what type of wire I mean, email me directly and I'll attach it in a reply
(images wont come through on this list). [EMAIL PROTECTED]
