Re: OT Emergency (puppy)

2005-12-05 Thread BONNIE J KALMBACH
Hi y'all,
I just joined the OT list but it says I have to wait to be approved -
and I have a possible emergency.

My son just called from the Gulf coast to say that his Katrina orphan
pup, she's about 3 or 4 m onths old, had chewed on one of those little
oxygen absorber packets that are sometimes put in shoes, leather
goods, or MRE's. The packets say not for human consumption on them. It
looked about half chewed but the pup seems fine so far. Are these things
toxic?

Thanks for any info,
Bonnie in WI

Your son should call a veterinary emergency clinic. They should be able to
give that info on the phone ... also there is the Poison Center (animal)
1-800 548-2423. or 1-888-423-4435 ASPCA (they charged $30 or $45 a case in
1/00). Hugs to your son for his caring for this Katrina orphan.

Not sure if they're toxic
Do you have a 24 hour vet near you to call?
If they give you NSAL Poison Control Toll Free #, there is a $25 or more
charge.

If you are really worried, you can induce vomiting with either, hydrogen
peroxide, or syrup of ipepac (sp?).
Also, you can try activated charcoal.

calling is the best option--some things can be made worse by inducing vomiting, and i, for one, can never remember which ones
