Please accept my deepest condolences at the sudden loss of Sammy. Please convey the same to your mother. It really doesn't matter how old our fur babies are when we lose them. They are never here with us long enough. I grieved horribly when my 18 year 7 month old Maine Coon, Ticker, passed on. I raised her from hours old, first by tube feeding her for 3 days and nights and then on a bottle. She was like my human baby. It will be two years this coming February 10 that I lost her and I still grieve for her physical presence.
