TS carries the pine pellet horse bedding I use. Glad to know about the corn based but would be concerned about weevils where I live. I had to stop using SWeats because of them. The pine turns to sawdust that I compost or use as a mulch around plants---hoping the cat odor will discourage rabbits. Sounds gross but various animal urines are used in the sprays used to repel rabbits, deer etc. Worth a try anyway. My animals love all of the Blue Buffalo flavors (cats and dog), I'm lucky because mine are not picky eaters. However, they tend to throw up when they eat other brands... I can't figure out why. So I've started by mixing Purina Hairball with the Blue Buffalo to make it stretch longer. I'm also going to start to cook up some meat for them as a supplement. :-) Buddy LOVES roast beef! These guys are wonderful but not the kind you can put medicine on. For numerous very good reasons, they consider me a good source of food, the area a good source of shelter and that is it. I can touch them sometimes and have tnr them (the price of the above) but good contact isn't an option. And when things go in the food, all of them n=may get it. This isn't bad since they are a very close crew, napping, eating and hanging out together. I suspect that they get the same problems so mass treatment isn't a bad thing. Any information is truly appreciated. Three of the five cats showed up at older ages. We just go through treating one at the vets' for a tick borne disease (tick found on 12/27 when no tick should be around in southern KY)-- read $1000+ vet bill but Red is healthy and happy right now. Cat litter, I go to Sam's (or Costco, depends on where you live) and get the 50 lb bag of clay cat litter for $7 and mix it with the nicer clumping litter. It still works great and it stretches the good stuff further. I don't know anything about reverse mortgages, I just bought my first house (I'm 23) about a hear ago. I have found a cheaper source of litter. They like World's Best which is made from corn. I can cut cost more by buying horse bedding made from coursely ground corn and corn cobs. Doesn't work too good with the scoopers, but does the job of stopping odor and clumps well enough. Things are getting tight, money wise and am going back to work at 70 as soon as I get a job of some kind. SS does not cut it when heating bills go up and insurance costs are added in. I fed her that at first and after she got past her starvation mode,(a time when she was grateful for anything to eat), she would not eat it as well. I always use tuna or mackerel for trapping cats or having them eat their meds - great disguise! I think it's OK to use fish once in a while, as long as it's not the only diet, especially for male cats. It's a great idea to add cooked meats to the canned food, but you have to start slowly so that you don't upset their tummies. Anytime one changes food, it should be done by mixing small portion of new with the old, and slowly increasing the proportion until the desired amount or total change is achieved. Cats' tummies have to get their enzymes working for new foods, or else there could be some runs! The ferals at my Mom's prefer Purina dry + whatever treats I come up with. I suspect that foods without a lot of artificial coloring would be best. My two boys like the Purina but they get is more as a treat than a regular food. No matter what you feed, please keep a close eye for recalls. Very true. I have to keep pumpkin and probiotics on hand for the ferals. And hope they eat most of their meals at Mom's. Unfortunately they roam and there is nothing I can do about that. We TNR those who hang around and have managed to bring some inside but there are too many and Mom is too fragile for any more inside cats. At this stage, she has to pay someone to clean the litter box and feed the ferals when I am not around. When I can, I keep back fatty pieces of chicken and whatever else. They get put into bags and used in soup when the cats need to gain weight for cold weather. A neighbor gave me lots of butter from the bottom of his freezer and I will add that too. This winter I put a snuggle safe under the water bowl to keep it from freezing as fast. They deerve any help we can give them. The ones who have come in have been the most wonderful companions. The ones who haven't are wonderful, brave, smart cats who just don't want to live with a person or haven't had the opportunity. One sadness is that so many have left. My cats eat canned Wellness but only the salmon and turkey flavor. Go figure. They *Love* Prarie chicken dryed catfood. It's pretty good nutrition-wise. They aren't thrilled w. Turkey but LOVE that Sardines, Shrimp Crab. We rotate through the different flavors cause we wouldn't want the little buggers to get bored with their food-LOL. They finally agreed to all eat some Blue Buffalo Lite dry but it took a bit of doing.
