Re: Ages please- OT- Ferals
I know all too well what those poor babies are feeling - being in captivity. And I didn't mean to put them down using the term nasty. Sorry, my mistake. It's not their fault at all But, bless them, being trapped rescued being at the shelter is a lot better than what they were facing - CERTAIN DEATH!!! We got so many calls from people begging for help because they were facing other (kill) shelters coming out to trap them due to complaints from neighbors. And, our shelter/sanctuary is not a bad place All cats are placed in large rooms/areas after initial isolation while doing all tests/bloodwork. And, each area has an outside deck for them. Plus, lots of beds, little huts (to act as hiding places), etc. And, they always have plenty to eat.dry wet. So, they will never face hunger again. Or any illness - we have vets on property 3X a week (Now, medicating them is tricky, but it does get done.) And, I always had (still do, I think[?]) a way in working w/ ferals. Fostered MANY was able to bring them around. Can't even count how many former ferals were adopted. And, now I have my Charity...a former feral. Ended up in ER many times from her!!! And, I was just trying to help.. Even Bart (RIP), meanest feral I ever encountered, trusted me, sadly, too late, when Charity led me to him. I really believe the whole reason Charity is a love-muffin (with me only), is because she knew I had helped Bart, her constant companion. People are the problem, NOT the poor cats. And, education IS the key, but, sadly, too many people won't listen. After all, They're only animals!. Boy, does that p*ss me off! Heard that WAY too many times! RE: Ages please- OT- Ferals
Hey Patti, I think that's great that you have a way with the ferals-I've never encountered any, but I just had a friend commit to helping me catch and release this summer, pending I find funding for the spays/neuters. I'm going to contact the nearest shelters (30 miles from here is the closest, I believe). Of course, I'd love to run a sanctuary for them, but this is all I can do for now. Like you've mentioned-education is the key, and I hope to start educating myself and those in my community, and work from there. Talking about mean people, I thought I'd vent a little. One of my internet friends informed me of her attempts to catch ferals in Iowa (we live in Nebraska). An officer from the humane society in that area of Iowa (not sure where exactly) seemed to believe that population control means shooting the cats! He just watched and laughed as they spent 5 hours catching ferals on a farm-they ended up with 22, but no thanks to him. It's sad to think that people who work in humane societies are like that. It's horrible that they are even allowed to work for them! Thank goodness there are kind people to help-I only with there were more! Try Alley Cat Advocates. They have chapters across the US and may be able to help. If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow man. Re: Ages please- OT- Ferals
I think we all know what you mean but the AC suggestion stands. Given that yours is a shelter, you might find a group that would be willing to work with them for little or nothing. Alternative vets and those involved in homeopathy, Reiki etc may be able to put you in touch with such a group. I just know how much it has helped with ferals I have been involved with. Some ferals want to be house cats, some want to stay on the fringes and think about it and some, like Trouble's Angel, appreciate food and shelter but want nothing else to do with people. A person with your heart has no need to ever explain the choices that are made for critters. They are made with the best of intentions. As you pointed out, there are others in this world who will have to answer for their heartless decisions. Blessings to you and all in your care. If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow man.
