I don't bown a sewing machine and haven't in years. Well, that might be a
lie, there may be an almost brand new although it is over 12 years old
machine I packed and brought here when I bought this house about 11 or so
years ago. I think I had it out of the box once and actually threaded a
couple of bobbins. Maybe. Out in the garage? Maybe Good Will?

No dainty ladylike habits for me. I will work in the yard/garage but none
of that cookin, cleanin, sewing, mending stuff for me.

Jo-Ann Stores is having a 50% off sale on fleece and flannel. Do you know
anyone who can sew? I'm two left hands and 10 thumbs but someone who can

I don't care what it looks like. I care what it smells like. Lol. I did order
some patio furniture from Home Depot. It's not that comfortable, but I only put
cushions on the chair I'll be sitting in since I live by myself. When I go to
bed I throw the cushions in the spare bedroom. I don't have to cover or vacuum
them because I don't take them out  unless someone comes over. As soon as they
leave I put the cushions away. If a cushion does get peed on it can be washed.
I have nothing upholstered left in my house.

It does look better, but mostly it saves me all the work of covering it and
vacuuming it, and washing all the various coverings.

Also was cheap because I bought it off season. Additionally if a cushion gets
ruined I can always by new patio furniture cushions in the future.

I'm hoping this will make things cheaper. I typically take any couch friends
are giving away and throw it away when it gets peed on in a place where the
cats have uncovered all plastic

Now I find that I have them here in Missouri. When we built our house and
finally got it closed up, found a 5 one while on the way to bed. Missed
stepping on him thank God. Because we are on a south facing bluff we have
them, rattle snakes and anything else that lives under a rock in a burrow.

I lucked out with the most recent second hand sofa that I bought off of
craigslist.  Not only are the arms and legs carved wood and thus harder to
destroy by clawing, all the seat and back cushions zip off for laundering.  And
the upholstery fabric is really thic, apparently impervious to urine.  I've
already gotten two years out of this couch and matching chair and I may have it
for a couple more.

Someone actually surrendered a dog to the shelter where I used to work because
they got new furniture, and the dog no longer matched.

As for myself - I've given up. The sofa is covered with plaid furniture
protectors with a waterproof vinyl backing that I got from Bass Pro Shops. I
also use inexpensive plastic-backed canvas dropcloths from Home Depot.
Eventually the plastic gets shredded, but they're easy to wash and cheap to
replace. My mattress is covered with a mattress protector and a blue tarp over
that. Sheets are changed daily, since I sleep with two dogs and a multitude of
cats.

Most of my friends have multiple cats and dogs, but those who don't and can't
accept my pets are free not to visit. I saw a doormat somewhere that read:
For visitors who don't like my pets: They live here. You don't. I need to
buy it.

Yeah, I understand. I dearly love the cats (all five who live indoors with
me) and really enjoy their company (sounds strange to some, but you all
probably understand). I like to look at the couch and love seat and see
lovely sleeping felines.makes me feel fortunate!

However.being newly single it is something (ahem) to explain to possible
suitors. The only part I *don't* like is that the furniture is off-white
and has had puke, pee and 'whatever' tossed on it. That and the fur. But
as I tell people, one day I'll write a memoir titled, Covered in Cat Hair:
A Story of Love.

After that hits the best seller list I'll buy new furniture!

Don't buy new.  I never buy new upholstered anything.  I buy used living room
furniture off craigslist, always cheap but attractive.  Until my current living
room set ($125 for couch and matching chair) with the zip-off washable cushion
covers I simply changed the couch every year.  (Check the free section on
craigslist as well as the furniture section.  Got a great free couch a couple
of years ago.)

Furniture is around #50 down on my priority list of things I need.  I live in
South Texas.  We have a 365 day flea season and now that I moved out to a rural
area in order to be able to keep my rescued cats without having to deal with
stupid Animal Control Officers who never even read their own ordinances, I also
have scorpions, snakes and assorted weird looking crawlies.  I tend to stay
away from anything upholstered in favor of washable pillows, washable patio
cushions, large towels from Goodwill and snuggy cat beds and blankets. Anything
that can't be hosed down or tossed into the washing machine has no place in a
house that 38 cats call home. As long as I can park my rump on something that
is clean, won't have any hidden, stinging surprises and is fairly comfortable,
I don't care what it looks like.

Fortunately,
almost all of my friends are rescuers so everyone thinks I'm normal.

I've heard of this... People who want to get rid of a cat because
the fur doesn't match the furniture.. Geez.

I have my furniture covered in multicolored velour upholstery, and my rugs,
are all oriental design. The design really hides the fur, and the soft
velvet upholstery is not what cats like to claw. It works, and I have
a bunch of cats of all sizes, shapes and colors including three long haired
cats who really leave a lot of fur around! There are ways to live with
multiple cats and still have a nice home, but too many people use fur as
an excuse to dump their pets.
