Re: [Felvtalk] seeking home for adult feluk positive

2008-10-31 Thread Sharyl
Kelly, how does one go about finding a a list of sanctuaries for pets to list
in ones will.  I have a combo of healthy cats, CRF kitties, and FeLV+ kitties.
I'd like to make plans in advance.  At 61 I can reasonably expect to live for
many years but there is always the chance of accidents, unexpected illness,
etc.  How does a person plan for something like this when it might not be
needed for 20 yrs?

This is a good thing to worry about. Our rescue has a program which takes
in animals if someone suddenly dies (the Nod Fund), but we can't take them
all in. It is far better to make preparations.

On another note, Missy went to see the vet today and the vet *could not hear

magically disappeared, it made me happy anyway...

The other thing is if you take in 33 FeLV+ cats in 5 years the 9
that I
now have are probably the 1/3 that can live for 8 or more years so I
guess its time I started getting my numbers down As things are now
they will all stay here but just no more new ones

Very true. I have two outside right now that I'm trying to get homes for. I
have called every rescue I know and I think I have somebody that will take them
but things are moving so slow. I want these kitties to have a safe place to go
but I can't bring them in my home because of my cats. I feel awful for these
cats. I asked my husband how they always know to find me! If somebody doesn't
come through by tomorrow, I'm going to take them to a vet myself and then I
have no idea what next. I hope they don't test positive for anything.

Re: [Felvtalk] seeking home for adult feluk positive

2008-10-23 Thread Amy

I think all of us cat people are constantly trying to find
homes for abandoned kitties. I have spent $215 this week on
one that was dumped on me. Thank God she is healthy at

taking to the vet. I spent $234 on him last week. A friend

I know Amy. I've been letting this little cat in and out of my house but it
stresses Mickey out so much that I won't leave her in and the weather is
turning cold and messy. I found someone who will take her and her mother but
they will have to be outside cats and I just hate that. At least if she stays
at my house I will provide shelter even if she has to stay out most of the
time.

Re: [Felvtalk] seeking home for adult feluk positive

2008-10-23 Thread Amy
Not sure, luck perhaps. I used to run my own rescue so I do have lots of
contacts but I think this was a bit of luck and some cat lovers feeling sorry
for the cats. One is just a little white one with patches, very friendly. The
other has a messed up eye, pretty gross :( They first told me to feed them and
make them shelter and they would look for foster homes. I've had two people
write and say they'll foster for the rescue so I've got my fingers crossed. I
never thought I'd be able to find somebody because I know how full cat rescues
get. Since they haven't taken the cats yet, I just offered to pay vetting in
hopes of moving things along.

Good luck!

And he should be. Perhaps someone on the list can advise how to
introduce them. I've introduced a lot of cats without problems but
not with the concerns you have. I can tell you that Feliway spray has
done wonders for me. The plug ins do nothing but others have had
different experiences.

only thing about not taking in more is it is so hard to say no. you know that
if you don't what will happen to them. as for taking care of ourselves, i tend
to put taking care of others before me and yes, it can cause problems. i
realized that when my father was so ill and i got run down, tried so hard to be
strong. finally realized that i am not wonder woman. now am taking meds and
testing my sugar like i should and eating vegitarian again. felling better
already. dorlis

diet and $300 a month for pills I probably am a lot better than I would

The other thing is if you take in 33 FeLV+ cats in 5 years the 9 that I

contact Alley Cat Rescue, they have instructions for building winterized boxes
so they can stay outside. they use them for wild/feral colonies to stay in
after they have been caught, spayed/neutered and ear tipped for identification.
then they release them where were caught. caregivers then feed and watch over
them. this way colony does not increase, but decreases as older cats die. i
don't have a colony (live in middle of woods, not city), but 2 other neighbors
and i adopt all the strays that show up at our houses and take to vet for shots
and spaying/neutering. we do get a lot of cats and dogs dumped out here
because people like to think that they can fend for themselves. they really
just don't want responsibility of caring for them. we take them in because
many in the country feel a bullet is cheaper than keeping them, so when a stray
shows up on their property, they shoot it, good target practice they say. i
have a mouth and have alienated some neighbors because of this. it is an
animal they say and has no value to them so get rid of it. dorlis

Re: [Felvtalk] seeking home for adult feluk positive

2008-10-23 Thread Marylyn
Check it out on line. It has an odor (I can't detect it) that helps
put them at ease. Kitty Katt (my father's cat, he died, my mother's
cat, she became unable to care for Kitty, my very unwilling cat) hid
for 3 months at my home. I started using it on me and she finally
started coming out once I laid down on the floor to sleep (her level,
less threatening etc---slept there for 3 months trying to get her
out). Finally she decided she was safe and able to rule as she had
never ruled before. I am using it with Copper and Thomas (feral
kittens) to teach them what they can and can't scratch, get them used
to changes etc. It works wonders for me. Others may have had
different experiences. My vets, both regular and holistic, use it in
cat boarding areas, exam areas, high stress situations.

Again, I understand the issue with Mickey. You belong to him
and ...well, that says it all.

Re: [Felvtalk] seeking home for adult feluk positive

2008-10-22 Thread Tad Burnett
Hi Kelley
Funny thing about the heart I knew my blood pressure was high
for 15 or 20 years but never did anything about it... I was probably
in better shape half way through my hospital stay than I have been
in a long time... I do every thing that I did before except for a new
diet and $300 a month for pills I probably am a lot better than I would
have been...
The other thing is if you take in 33 FeLV+ cats in 5 years the 9 that I
now have are probably the 1/3 that can live for 8 or more years so I
guess its time I started getting my numbers down As things are now
they will all stay here but just no more new ones
Tad

and am learning to say NO
In the mean time there are 4 6month old orange kittens in eastern Mass.
that are running out of time Help

I think it would do us all good to remember if we don't take care of
ourselves we can't take care of our cats (this would include me, not
singling anyone out here).
