and then discuss what the disadvantage is?

You write it into raw_bits_per_pixel.


You mean bits_per_raw_sample?

To do that in a way that's actually usable we start going back the whole 
rabbit hole though. It starts with the field missing on frames, and goes 
on with nothing using it for video at all so far, only for audio, where 
that kinda setup is actually well supported.
