I've been scanning some airshow photos and getting the right exposure out of
vuescan has been extremely difficult. The day was very overcast, and
there's a lot of photos where most of the frame is clouds with some very
small aircraft. Vuescan seems to be using an autoexposure algorithm similar

It's under PrefsExternal Viewer (on Windows). You might have to plug in
the path to Photoshop.exe. I'm not sure. Check with Ed.
I found if I put the 'directory path\photoshp.exe' in the Vuescan dialog,

thanks, that did the trick.. use default in Vuescan and associate tif files

plus I can quickly examine levels and PS will properly display 48bit tif files.

All you need to do is to type the full path name of photoshp.exe (the
program that launches Photoshop) in the Viewer filed under the Prefs tab in
VueScan. For example, if you use the default settings:
C:\Programs\Photoshop 6.0\Photoshp.exe/ You also need to put a check in the
External viewer box

Similar to what you've tried, check the Advanced Workflow Suggestions in

I assume you've already tried the None setting for Color balance.
Have you tried changing the Gamma and Image brightness settings?

Forgot to add that PolaColor Insight is a standalone program and does not
require Photoshop or any other imaging editing program to scan or adjust
color, sharpen, etc.

I load the SS4k slide/film holders up and then look at them under a large
Luxor lamp/magnifier as I blow off any visible dust. The lamp really makes
any dust stand out. When the film is clean, I keep the film holder held on
edge until it gets to the scanner and is inserted. Even with these

Winsor,
Silverfast is not an extra cost option on the SS120. There are two
packaging configurations on the SS120. One with just PolaColor Insight. This
is for users that find Insight is all they desire or do raw scans and use

Isn't it an option, as in, you can buy the scanner without it if you want?
Doesn't it cost more to buy the scanner with SilverFast than without it?
Then why isn't it an extra cost option if it costs more, and is an option?

For whatever it's worth, David, I for one do not have a problem with
