This topic seems to have moved into MF scan resolution vs output size.

I use a 4000dpi MF scanner, and my slightly cropped 6x7's are around 250Mb
by the time I have dropped them into 8 bit.
So far everyone has been dividing these pixels by 240 or 300 dpi for
David,
UK prices for the SS120 seem completely out of wack,
Jessops (our BH) have it at GBP 2703 plus tax (about $4000 !) and sell the
Nikon for less... they are normally a cheap store to buy stuff
other retailers, such as Argon have it for GBP 1499 plus tax (about $2170!).
this seems so
Paul,
Jessops mainly serve the amateur market and you will find that they are slow
to pass on discounts of the magnitude we are seeing until their direct
competitors do likewise.
If you can get the SS120 from Argon for £1499 take it and forget Jessops!!!
They are NOT the dealer they once
Thanks for the info Rob. JASC's plans look more rational if that's their
beliefs on the market their position in it. But they may well be wrong
on the future of 16 bit editing. And of course revealing the features of a
future product before there's even a beta release could be seen as
Effective USB 1.1 throughput is up to 7.5 MB/s, the claimed 12 MB/s is
rather theoretical

The LS40 isn't 4000dpi though.
Resolution matters!
True, true. But I'm not sure how much it matters. I believe the LS40 is
2900dpi? In which case it's probably going to be plenty for me - I'm
only intending to create/store images which are 2-3Mb, if that.

I have used two film scanners with USB version 1.1 interfaces, with both
a P-100 and Celeron 500 CPU (and between 64 and 600+ megs of memory). I
also previously had a SCSI interfaced film scanner. The image file
sizes ranged from 18 megs (2400 dpi/8 bit) to about 50 megs (2820 dpi/16
bit).
Hello,
I´ve read several times that the Dmax for bw negatives is considerably
lower with the Nikon Coolscans than for colour negs. Which of the existing
film scanners gets excellent results also with black and white material?
Greetings Bernhard
well I have it form a very reputable source that Polaroid's price to
retailers in the UK is £1722.
This indicates that anybody selling it on at 1499 is either (a) insane, or
(b) getting their supplies somewhere else.

I am going to guess two things are happening here.
1. Argon purchased a Demo unit at a reduced price which is what I bet they
are selling
2. Jessops for whatever reason does not stock the SS120 and would prefer you
buy another brand they have in stock so they have a deliberately inflated
price on
Hi all,
I know this has been said before here, but I thought I'd just reiterate it
in case others missed out. I have an LS4000 scanner and shoot with mainly
Provia or Velvia. I've been 'sort of' happy with the sharpness of the scans,
resigned to using various sharpening methods post scan - no

Maybe. Most flatbeds only output 8 bits per channel, and that leaves us
filmscanner users. We're a
the circles/ weird shapes are 'newtons rings'
which are interference patterns from glass/film surfaces meeting
very well known (google it to find out more)
use anti newton mounts when you get these

Ummm,
no its not a secondhand unit, or ex-demo, nor are they insane.

With a few slides, say 10%, I am getting this erm, multi-coloured circles

A minor point for future clarity:
Little b means bits. Big B means bytes.
When people write Mb (whether 11 or 12 for USB) they mean mega-bits.
My scanner, attached to my computer using a USB 11Mb/s interface (or is it
12Mb/s? I can never remember which) has such low resolution that a
Well I'm still trying to figure out the SilverFast HDR puzzle on my

Silverfast 5.x works fine, Polacolor works fine (btw it pays to play
around with the various softwares when working with color negs)
ViewScan works fine
when I try and run Silverfast HDR it comes
