If people aren't stuck on having a full zoom range, in general, fixed
focus lenses are better quality and better value. Also, used lenses can
often be good value, if they come with some type of warranty.
It has been brought to my attention that I mis-typed in my posting

I'm usre this is generally true, although I imagine there's such a thing as
limiting returns. I find it hard to believe that the price difference
between the Pentax 50mm f1.7, f2.8 and f1.4
almost 100 % meaning...

Hi Alex!
Rob, there are many Mailing Lists and Forums available online
for any major brand (Canon, Minolta, Nikon and Pentax) where you will find
a
lot of that brand specialists who can surely advise you about the brand
and
third-party lenses you would go with.
Thanks. Someone sent me an
Sorry - I have been trying to take this thread offlist and failed to check
the reply address on this one. :(
FWIW I am looking to borrow a friend's camera to compare the quality of
results with his prime lenses. I want to get an idea of just how much
improvement I should expect before I run out

Hi Rob,
Here are those scans as promised:

We're going pretty far OT, so please reply off list. Contax G's are AF
rangefinders. They're great as long as you go in knowing their limits --
they don't suit everybody. The Zeiss lenses are from 16 to 90mm
Try:

Keep in mind that fixed focal length lenses are generally better than zooms, fixed aperture zooms are better than those that vary with focal length, and the more you pay, the better the lens.

Optical bang-for-the buck is high with Contax G series. They take a
limited range of top notch Zeiss lenses at great prices. Email me off-list

Hi Bob - how much are you talking for a Contax body and lens? Even the base
model body and a 50mm or whatever lens is
The Contax G1 can be purchased with the 35mm f2 lens,

Sorry about the OT question, but I was wondering if anyone on the list could
suggest forums where I could ask questions about lenses? I'm getting a
little frustrated by the lack of sharpness in photos taken with a Sigma
28-80 f3.5-5.6 zoom, and I'm wondering just how much difference it will
make
