Hi all,
I have just discovered that smaller hairpins (cresc. or dim.) are extended a
little on the closed end when you "Compile Post Script Listings" in the ps
file. The closed end gets a sharp angle instead of "boxed" one, as in the
longer ones, so the closed end is touching the dynamic markin
Ok, just to recapitulate:
This problem occurs on some Finale files (and I have no idea what makes
it appear) under the following conditions:
- OS X only
- PDF created directly from the print dialog (ie not using
Acrobat/Distiller)
- PDF printed from Acrobat Reader 5.x on any _Mac or PC_ to a pos

I don't think Apple's built in PDF capabilities let you specify a PDF
version. Plus, this will not prevent anyone from opening it in Acrobat
Reader 5. And I am not even sure whether the same error may actually
happen with Reader 4 as well, although that I don't know. Finally for
any OS X based
Then I would suggest saving the file as an Acrobat 1.3 (version 4) file, if
you have the capability. If you can, save the postscript and distil it.
Personally, every printer I've worked with is using acrobat 4, which is in
my opinion, still a pretty good piece of software.
Can I look at the file?
Hello, Johannnes.
I can confirm that the problem exists as explained by MakeMusic.
Recently I had a problem with a score that printed all the whole rests as
ppp sign in my PS printer. We took the PDF to a printing house with PC and
still we had the same problem.
However when we installed Acrobat
That is simply not within my circle of influence, I have no direct
contact with the printers used to print the scores.
The strange thing is that some Finale files have this problem, but
others haven't, which makes me think there is something in Finale which
is at least partly responsible.

The problem only occurs in Reader 5.x. Yes there is version 6, which
does not appear to have this problem.
Unfortunately this doesn't help. The whole thing is not a problem here,
but at a client's place, where the scores are printed. I have no
influence on which PDF reader they use, and version
We are talking about Reader, not the full Acrobat. Acrobat Reader 6 is a
totally bloated piece of software, which is the reason that many people
stay with version 5. The problem is not that I can't use another version
of Acrobat Reader, it's that I am sending PDFs to a client, and at his
end th
I'm inclined to believe that the problem truly is Acrobat 5 related.
Basically, Adobe released Acrobat 5 to have a version of acrobat that was
usable in OSX/WinXP. Other than that, the program is useless. There are
numerous problems (layers, transparency, font embedding, I could go on...) I
would d
Strange problem:
With some files (both 2k4 and 2k5) when I create a PDF using the
built-in OS X method, I get an odd problem. These PDFs look normal on
screen and print fine on non-postscript printers. However, when printed
from Acrobat Reader 5 to a PS-printer, some characters print as other
