This only works when there are endings involved, much to my dismay. I think
Finale should make it work anywhere. If you are, for example, starting a coda
system with a previously-tied note, you will have to tie forward in the usual
way, then edit the tie to go backwards with

I want to tie a note across the bar line into a 2nd ending, so I need a
backwards tie. (I am using Finale 2K11 on a Mac.) I forgot how to do this and
turn to the collective wisdom of my colleagues on the Final List.
