P.S. Another problem I forgot to mention that has affected other files as well as this one: on some occasions, whenever I click anywhere with the mouse, no matter what tool is selected, Finale always starts playback. I can either wait for it to finish, or force it to close using the Windows task manager. I have now also created a new file from scratch and entered the notes again. It works while no smart shape glissandi are attached, but as soon as I add them, the same problem occurs. This is very strange because I have a whole passage at the beginning of the work with a similar number of glissandi which plays back just fine.

Here is some more information about my system and methods:
1) I am using a PC; AMD athlon 64 X2 processor; Windows XP 2002 sp3
2) I am using VST with "Instruments for Finale 2009"
3) There are 12 instruments (all strings in this case) each allocated to a separate channel
4) In this work I am using a lot of glissandi
5) It makes no difference if I am running other applications, but my first test was to ensure everything else was stopped

I have also cut out the offending measures (12 of them) and pasted them into a new file and get the same results. I have then switched from VST to normal MIDI. This allows me to start playback where I like, but the intermittent playback still occurs. Through MIDI there are also some other weird results: i) Playback occuring in bars containing all rests (as if different lines are activated at different times - but there are no independent time signatures and there are no extra notes in any bars) this varies depending on where I start the playback. ii) Tuning has gone awry, producing some very strange microtonal effects - not intended. This also varies depending on where I start the playback from - as if the glissandi are causing Finale to lose track of its tuning. iii) There are some hiccups at the ends of notes where all parts come off together (assuming they do all stop).

When this happened before (with 2002 I think) I eventually started a completely new file from scratch, entering everything directly with no cut-and-paste. I cannot remember what had caused the problems, but I think it was complex playback parameters.

[Finale 2009] A couple of weeks ago I asked about a
problem with Finale failing while human playback is on.
I got no response to that, but I am now encountering
several problems with playback, including one I used to
have with an older version of Finale. Following is a
list of the various problems.

1) With human playback switched on, Finale will only
work playing back from the beginning of the file. Set
the playback to left-most measure or a specified bar
number causes Finale to collapse in a heap.

2) The above problem is now also happening when human
playback is switched off.

3) A problem I encountered with an earlier version of
Finale (and never really fixed): playback is
intermittent, some bars play, some do not; some parts in
some bars play, others do not; some parts in some bars
play some of the time (i.e. notes are truncated). This
consistently happens in the same place. I copied the
offending section to a new file - the playback error
still occurs. When this happened in v2002 once the
playback stopped, it did not come back in again. In
v2009 the playback comes and goes.

My only guess is that I may not have enough RAM (2GB).
Can anyone confirm this or suggest other causes?

I think that you might need to provide some more clues, such
as which playback method are you using (i.e. soundcard
synth, external midi module, SmartMusic soundfont, GPO or
other VSt playback), what sort of score you're working on
and how complex the music is, how many different staves are
set to the same midi channel or soft-synth patch. Do you
get the same errors no matter which playback method you use?
Are you on a Windows PC or a Mac?

Along with the potential for a problem due to ram (although
on a PC with 2GB you should be alright, depending on what
other apps are running in the background), the specs of the
processor you're using and the OS you're using can have an
effect as well.
