I figured it out.  The midi setup/midi out/match on/off needs to be checked.
That solved the problem immediately.  Well, I guess one must try everything
to figure out this program sometimes.

Check your MIDI settings and make sure you are not playing Finale thru
native instruments (i.e., uncheck this line).

Check your Window/Instrument List and make sure that for every
independent instrument you want to hear there is a unique instrument
name and channel, and that each channel corresponds to a unique General
Midi (GM) sound.

Just a quick question.

I tried to play a finale file with the midi sounds only, and it 
wouldn't
play.
I then was able to change the midi settings and have it play on GPO.

Is there a way to make finale play midi sounds only?  This would be

helpful.
