It's not your esthetic reaction that's being criticized, but your
truly illogical point about school funding. The money spent here
would not exist to *be* spent were there no public art installation
to generate the revenue in sales that supported its creation.
Certainly true. Just as the millions of dollars raised by
politicians COULD be spent more productively on health care instead
of on their own egos, but again that money would not be raised at all
except for the cost of electioneering, and so would not be available
for ANY other use.

But, David, this profound illogic may actually be hardwired into our
brains, at least judging by the frequency it gets trotted out by
people who THINK they are being logical. The false dichotomy: spend
it on this or spend it on that, but of course don't even admit that
you can spend it on both! Oliver North, famous for subverting the
U.S. government and running a guns program from inside the White
House, raised over $20 million to feed his ego and desire to take
public office, almost all of it from outside the state of Virginia,
but the money he spent on his unsuccessful bid was spent here in
Virginia and in D.C.

The arguments against the space program, which is the ONLY way we can
eventually ensure the survival of the human race, are similar. But
where do these people think that money actually goes? It doesn't
disappear into some black hole. It is used to purchase things and to
pay people's salaries. Every penny is immediately returned to the
economy to create jobs, which in turn create more jobs, increase the
tax base (which is where educational funding comes from in this
country), support contractors and subcontractors and their employees'
families. I don't consider economics a real science, since it can
only generate opinions and never predict outcomes accurately, but
common sense says that every dollar spent in ANY public or private
endeavor circulates through the economy and benefits both the economy
and the citizens who make up that economy. Including the money
raised for and spent on the infamous Gates.

'Nuff said.

was amazing.

The photographer Spencer Tunick staged a shoot in Montreal a few years
ago. His specialty at the time was shooting hordes of naked people. I
would have participated if I had been available, and I followed the
story with fascination. 2000 volunteers showed up at 6:00 am on a
chilly Sunday to pose, draped across the steps of Place des Arts. His
photographs are at once chilling, warming, shocking, gorgeous, barely
erotic (if at all) and anything but ignorable. I was amazed at my own
reactions to his various works, all of which have the people's faces
not looking toward the camera, so we are not as aware of their
individuality or personalities. Yet the texture of so much naked human
flesh in an otherwise deserted urban setting got me to thinking in so
many different ways, I still can't get over it. Some people saw the
Holocaust, some saw a huge, happy orgy, some saw Armageddon, some saw
the Garden of Eden, some saw a nuclear aftermath, some saw pornography,
and some just saw texture divorced from the human materials.

I wish I could see the Christo installation. There's something about a
large canvas that's striking to me. Big painting, big sculpture, big
orchestra, all of it. My wife tells me it's a guy thing. 8-)

I may not totally agree, but I don't think I said anything on goverment
funding, did I?

Actually, fact is that opera without some kind of external funding is
simply not possible (at least not Grand Opera of any kind). Whether this
should be the government or not is certainly another question, and one
which I guess will be answered differently in Europe and the US.

But Christo is no different in this sense from any non-government-funded
opera company. He has sponsors, doesn't he? So does opera.

I wasn't. I think opera should be self sustaining and certainly not be

dancing.
Don't know what this has to do with Christo as he pays his own way, he can do what he likes with it. He could spend his cash on fine art that he keeps in a locked bank vault and then sit on the investment. As it is he beautifies places with it - and if you don't like it you get your park back or your building unwrapped pretty quickly anyway. The people that object are usually sound like they find it difficult to allow others to enjoy themselves if they don't share their own viewpoint.

[Finale] how to get the best possible sound output

2005-02-22 Thread Godofredo Romero
Hello there you happy listers
I am about to purchase a Mac G5 and before I do I would like to find out
through any of you musical friends a couple of things, and here is one
of them: I intend to add the Garritan, Kontakt soft wares or whatever
else it takes to produce really high quality recordings -sound output
- from my Finale files, and the question is: is the sound card that
comes with the machine good enough or do I or should I change it an
install a different card such as the M-Audio Audiophile PCI Audio card?
This and whatever other information regarding how to obtain the best
possible sound quality will be welcome.

At the time I am working on a Mac G3 with Finale 2004, I have already
purchased Fin 2005 to install it on the G5 as soon as I get it.

Thanks a million to all in advance.

[Finale] new and improved text tool

2005-02-22 Thread shirling neueweise
hi all,
i am submitting a proposal to CODA, and invite
your additions: please feel free to let me know
if there are things i have missed which you feel
need updating, improvement, implementation, or if
you feel certain points i have made need to be
altered, clarified, or otherwise edited.

disclaimer: i am not interested in starting an
endless slew of commentary concerning my view
vs. your view and who should decide what is
right. while i will certainly not claim to
have some sort of uniquely enlightened and
perfect vision of the situation, the list is
compiled according to what i believe to be
necessary, what i feel the priorities are (some
proposals are in fact elaborations of others'
ideas already voiced on this list). wherever it
might seem to be possible (it usually is), i have
proposed user-definable variations so that the
(new) Text Tool might suit all users' needs.

1) if you wish to simply voice your support of
the proposals, please contact me privately (tell
me your full name, what you do - composer,
educator, publisher - , and your web address) and
i will be happy to include your name on the list
of undersigners when i send the message to CODA.

2) if you disagree with the nature of the
proposed changes, please bring up the issue on
this list, your comments will certainly be taken
into consideration as i edit the message before
sending it to coda.

3) if you disagree completely with me, and wish
to tell me nothing more than you've got it all
wrong, i instead invite you to compile a list of
your own concerns and submit it to coda, thus
sparing us both of a needless waste of time and
energy.

n'hésitez pas de commenter en francais.
ihr könnte gern auf deutsch kommentieren.

** as this message is already quite long, please
quote only those points you are directly
responding to and remove all other non-relevant
bits of text from the reply.**

Dear CODA/MakeMusic,
Finale is close to being able to provide a
professional level of typographical control for
publishing. The overhaul of the Expression Tool
in F2004 was by no means unimportant, however
there are several issues which I believe would
render those improvements more complete.
Implementation of the following issues will, in
my view, turn current discussions of
greatly-needed and welcome additions and
improvements into discussions of revolutionary
improvements regarding the Text Tool.

The following is what i would love to read in the What's new in Finale 200?.
jef chippewa
PS before submitting this list to you, the ideas
were hashed out on the Finale List
finale@shsu.edu, managed by Mr Henry Howey.

THE NEW TEXT TOOL
Because of overlapping functionality, the
previous expression tool and text tool have been
combined into one powerful text tool which offers
all the previous features of both tools, albeit
with some revolutionary improvements.

The term Text is used to indicate an
individually-defined item in the Text List,
whether it contains an individual character (such
as dynamics), a word or string of words, or one
or more paragraphs.

GENERAL
* Text can be assigned to an individual note or
measure (as with the old Expression Tool) or to a
page or range of pages (as with the old Text
Tool).
* Once assigned, default positioning of the
individual Text can be altered or overridden, by
double-clicking the text's handle in the score,
clicking override, and redefining the
positioning (this does not affect the original).

VIEWING
* In order to assist the user in improving use
available monitor space, and to increase
efficiency in searching and maintaining the Text
List, the dialogue box for the Text Tool now has
a larger default size, in addition to being
resizable, both vertically and horizontally. The
size and position of the Text Window is saved in
the Finale preferences.
* The user can define the number of expressions
visible in the Text List dialogue box (definable
in the document options [text]: view n lines /
view full vertical screen / other?).
* The height of the individual item lines in the
Text List has been increased by 25-50%
(previously, any Text above 14pt fixed and many
music symbols - usually 24pt - were only
partially visible). The user can define the size
of the lines in the Document Options [Text]:
{smaller, small, normal, big, bigger}; or as a
percentage of the default size {50%, 75%, 100%,
150%, 200%}
* Clicking on a Text in the list displays it in a
vertically-scrollable box to the right of the
settings instead of opening a separate dialogue
box (i.e. it now functions similar to the
Document Options list).
* In the Text Designer (previously Text
Expression Designer), the Text and Playback
definitions both appear when clicking on the
Text Definition tab, and the Note Positioning
and the Measure Positioning definitions both
appear when clicking on the Positioning tab.
* Font settings for the individual Texts are no
longer a
