I haven't noticed slow downs too much so far. My scores have been for small ensembles recently. I also moved up to OS X 10.8 when it came out and haven't observed any other major problems.   Michael mmathew_musicp...@yahoo.com http://www.musicengravers.com/cgi-bin/engravers.pl

[Finale] scanning

2012-08-12 Thread Robert Blais
Hello all, I'm considering purchasing the newest version of Finale in order to use the scanning option. I often need to transpose/transcribe parts for my youth orchestra. Past versions have been less than helpful in their scanning ability. Has anybody used the most recent version in this way?

Hi Ryan, I use linked parts but that's non-negotiable. This Mac should have no trouble handling that, though. There is definitely something else going on, something Finale is doing that's causing the kernel_task process to spin out of control, which drags down everything with it. Cheers, -

yeah well, i thought linked parts would get fixed in 2008... 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012... and 2012b. sorry i don't have any other ideas, that and quiting linotype worked for me. you aren't using any font management software, are you? Tried that. Unfortunately, it makes no difference in my case

hm, ok. yeah i am still on 10.6. i forgot to mention, the reacton time for using TGTools align dynamics was DRAMATICALLY affected by this as well. so much that i stopped using it. now that linotype is off when using finale, it works fine again. I haven't noticed slow downs too much so

Actually -- this sounds weird but I'm beginning to suspect it's not actually Finale-related. It may be a coincidence that the kernel_task spike tends to coincide with my launching Finale. Instead, it seems like it might have something to do with my external monitor? That seems weirdly

wow, no idea, never had anything like that happen here. but when i'm at home i work on the external and use the laptop to dock things, so external is almost always on when laptop is. Instead, it seems like it might have something to do with my external monitor? That seems weirdly improbable,

Well, it seems like kernel_task activity is often heat-related, and plugging in the external monitor does force the MacBook Pro to use the discreet (non-integrated) graphics card, which runs a lot hotter than the integrated card that would be in use with the external screen disconnected. That
