Dick,

 

Sounds like a word extension problem. Are the lyrics in separate 
verses/sections/choruses? Select Lyrics/Word Extensions, select the handle(s) 
and delete. If they just re-appear, turn off Smart Word Extensions in Document 
Options/Lyrics, etc. 

(I'm using 2006, so menus may be didfferent)
