it used to be possible to click on systems and have the edit box show
the margins etc. of the selection... when i od this now, it works for
the 1st time, then it doesn't work (unless i switch tools and
back!!!), or clicking anywhere gives me the edit box for system 5?!?!

No no, these are all IMPROVEMENTS that MakeMusic has put into Finale
2010. They did extensive testing with it's user base on this.
