Re: [Finale] Merging several layers in one

Well, I thought that was an easy one, but I just checked Move/Copy Layers under the mass mover tool, (F2007c Mac 10.5.8) and, once again, I got results that I thought were wonky. Using the selection box to move layers 2,3,4 into layer one over wrote layers 1,2,3 and left the layer 4 note (moved to layer 1). Moving just layer 2 to layer 1 removes the original layer 1 - but does place layer 2 into layer 1. If I chose the option to copy rather than move, it seems that the existing layer is also over written. I guess I was thinking of a merge command. Can't help, sorry. Re: [Finale] Merging several layers in one
If you have a series of these, this might be worth the trouble: Add enough empty staves (temporary) below the staff you are working on to hold each note. Using the show only active layer command, copy each layer onto a separate stave. Change each stave to the same layer as the top staff. Then implode all the notes into the top staff. If you need clarification of the location of these commands, write again. I don't have Finale open right now. I think Matthew Hindson asked the same thing just a few days ago. I did a quick plug-in for it this evening. It's available on the tips site, Download area - Windows plug-ins. http://www.finaletips.nu/ The plug-in should be smart enough to detect the layers that are rhythmically different and shouldn't touch those layers. It will merge the notes to the lowest layer where the same rythm is found. (So you can for example merge layers 1+3 and 2+4 if there are 2 different rhythmical structures in the different layer pairs.) Let me know it it doesn't work for correctly for you. It was quite quick coding, so there might be some mistakes. Best regards, Jari Williamsson ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
Re: [Finale] Merging several layers in one
Another (kludgy) way to do it is to copy each layer to a different stave then use 'Piano Reduction' with midi note lower than the lowest note (ie '1'). This will merge all to the treble stave then copy all to the stave you want and delete extra staves. Steve P.
