Re: [Finale] Stray things on PDF that I can't find

2016-02-15 Thread Lee Actor
I reported this bug almost 3 years ago in Finale 2012, verified by Makemusic
tech support; apparently still not fixed. It's a bug in the 3rd party pdf
exporter used by Makemusic, so they can't fix it directly. The stray
characters tend to show up on pages with lots of triplets, but as I recall
there are other problems as well. In addition, the Finale built-in pdf
export is slow and produces humungous file sizes, up to 10x other
print-to-pdf solutions; even if it wasn't buggy, I would stay far away from
it. I've tried many print-to-pdf apps (and even paid for some), and my
current favorite by far is Bullzip, which is fast, full-featured, produces
very small file sizes, and is solid as a rock. Plus it's free for
individual use: http://bullzip.com/products/pdf/info.php (sorry Mac people,
Windows only). I wish the name was different, but I've been using it for
several years now and wouldn't think of using anything else.

Hi all,

Here's an image comparing export-to-PDF vs. print-to-PDF.

The export has those stray "3" characters at the bottom of page 2. I can't
locate them in the Finale file. They appear to be slightly larger versions
of
the "3" that I use for tuplets.

I've zoomed out in both page and scroll view to see if they were scattered
somewhere way out of view. No luck.

Any clues on how to find them? And why they might only appear in a Finale
export-to-PDF and not the print-to-PDF? They don't appear on other files
that
use the same template.

Of course it doesn’t help with your immediate problem. It’s a long term thing.
When next you are buying a new system, you might make another choice.
Probably not though.

Graeme,

Thanks for mentioning the Mac feature. As you know, 90 plus % of the time we

unproductive time spent reading other people's endless hassles and shortcomings
with Microsoft.

Thanks! Just did a reboot, reload, redraw, update layout, etc. They don't

Just hate this when it's a client. I can live with the poorer screen display

It does require changing printer, and there are no advanced settings with the
built-in Microsoft PDF printer. Its screen display of curves isn't as good.

The PDF virtual printer I'd been happily using for years (docPrint Pro) no
longer shows up as a printer on Windows 10.

I've never liked any program's "export to PDF" functions -- I've always
found the "print to PDF" using a 3rd-party PDF printer app installed as
a printer driver to work the best. No odd characters (I recall some of
those from Finale files when I've tried "export to PDF") and the file
size, in my experience, is smaller when I do a "print to PDF" than when
I do an "export to PDF."

Since both functions take about the same amount of time I see no reason
to bother with "export to PDF."

Thanks, yes, I'd forgotten that I have Adobe Acrobat. Unfortunately, deleting
those two characters also moves all the font characters (not stems or beams)
up about 5 inches.

I edited them to make them invisibly small. That works. For now -- though I
don't like it!

There are others -- I use Gaaiho, which installed as part of Nuance's
PDF Pro, which is a terrific and affordable PDF editing program. I
don't know if Gaaiho is available as a stand-alone product.

But there are others - CutePDF is one, PDF995 (the ads show up onscreen
but not on the printout -- pay the $9.95 and the ads disappear for
good). I'm sure there are other free ones.

I didn't even know Microsoft had finally included a PDF printer. :-)

It's perfect, thanks. I've suffered many a defective soft printer (including
CutePDF and PDF995, neither of which handled all the files properly). docPrint
Pro worked great, but its printer driver isn't Windows 10 compatible.

After a few tries -- including files with embedded graphics -- Bullzip does
the job. The results are clean and economical.
