Ithaca Elmira: Rony Lec, Mesoamerican Permaculture presents Oct 15-17

2012-10-08 Thread Michael Burns
Guatemalan Permaculture Teacher to Present on Food Sovereignty

Dates: October 15th - 17th, 2012

Ithaca, NY (Ithaca College, Cornell University)
Elmira, NY (Elmira College)

via http://fingerlakespermaculture.org

Ronaldo Rony Lec Ajcot will be coming to the Finger Lakes Region discussing
his permaculture work to improve food security in Central America.

His trip is sponsored by Cornell University’s Latin American Studies Program,
the Committee on U.S. Latin American Relations (CUSLAR,) the Ithaca College
Latin American Studies and Environmental Studies Departments and the Finger
Lakes Permaculture Institute.

After Guatemala's civil war ended in the early nineties, Rony returned to his
town, San Lucas Toliman, seeking a project to enrich the land and the
community. He found that permaculture allowed him to use his Kaqchikel Maya
agricultural traditions with ecological design skills to help build food
sovereignty in his coffee-growing community of small farmers. Rony Lec is now
considered one of Latin America's foremost permaculture teachers. He and the
Mesoamerican Permaculture Institute have been teaching ecological design and
permaculture to indigenous communities across the Americas for the past
decade.

Permaculture is an ecologically and socially conscious design method to create
sustainable, regenerative systems for our homes, farms, and workplaces.
Permaculture activists aim to empower people and their communities to design
using ecological principles and their own talents to meet basic needs.
