Re: #flxpc local permaculture guild (and testing)

2010-02-07 Thread Green Singer

I'm not sure if my last message went through--the text I got had no message
body.

What I suggested was that since three people had spoken up and offered to host,
that someone specify a date and time and we can go from there.

Since then, I got an email from McKenzie from ShareTompkins letting me know
that they're working on a gardening-themed swap-meet at CCE at the end of the
month. She wanted to know whether anyone from FLPCI would want to table; I was
wondering if folks would want to turn that into a co-hosted event, and if so,
would it make sense to do something like this:

End of February: FLPCI/ShareTompkins potluck and seed-swap
March 13: permaculture consulta in Syracuse
End of March: next Finger Lakes Permaculture Guild potluck (with possible site
tour and/or follow-up to the consulta)

I can take the lead on the event at CCE since I more or less bridge both
organizations, if someone can help me make sure I have my bases covered.

Thanks for the wonderful feedback,

Marvin

Marvin, I really like your idea of having a seed swap/potluck/general
permaculture-oriented gathering.
My home (on S. Albany St.) would be a potential spot to host it,
depending on how many people are interested.

 Hey folks,

It came up last night after Dave's talk that there used to be somewhat of
an active group here in Ithaca who would get together periodically to
socialize, review each others' designs, and generally geek out on things.
Also, that some people have been talking about doing that again, or wishing
it were happening. I'd like to offer to host such an informal gathering,
but my house is just too small, and besides, I'd like to get a feel for what
level of interest there is on the list. How would folks feel about doing a
seed-swap/potluck sometime this month? Is there any space available that
would work? It was so exciting last night to be in a room full of folks
interested in and doing the work, and I'd like to have that feeling more
 often.

 What do you say?

 Hello Friends!

It was fun to see many of you last night at Ithaca College for my talk!
 Thanks for coming!

I forgot to mention during my talk the upcoming Permaculture Teacher
Training course we are putting together this March. I thought I would send
out a reminder to the list since I forgot last night. More info is
below?please consider coming if you have a design course under your belt?we
already have one person from the FLX region coming, and another considering
coming. It will be great to bring fresh energy to the region and build the
cadre of collaborating teachers in upstate NY and beyond! We have 308
million people in the US who need what permaculture offers, whether they
know it or not, and most of the challenging trends we face change at
exponential rates. We need to build a strong movement of quality teachers
fast and get out there helping people shift to a new culture with joy and
creativity. Join us! Planet Earth wants YOU!

 Thanks and many blessings!

 Dave

 PS: Three things:

 1) we are raising scholarship funds to support those who cannot afford the
course fees and travel costs, so if you don?t apply you won?t know if we
 can
help you get into the course?so please apply if you want to come--don?t let
money or lack thereof stop you. If you want to donate to the scholarship
fund to support someone from your region, please be in touch! And

 2) Yes, the course IS in Minnesota in March! Don?t let that stop you
either. It looks like there will be some sort of carpool from this region
heading out there, so call on your sense of adventure and come play with
 us!
I?m not sure if or when or where I?ll do another one of these.

 3) You can download a flyer and comments from students from past trainings

I just want to say thanks to folks for taking the initiative on this. Over the
years, a realtively small group of local organizers / practitioners have take
on this type of project while simultaniously organizing and building on the
ground projects. It has proven time and again to be too difficult for the same
folks to be responsible for the local movement over and over again.

It is encouraging that we are getting an injection of 'new blood' as this is
often what it takes for movements to break out of their ruts.

I support Marvin's initiative and agree with Josh's comments as well. Getting
folks together for potlucks with some theme, activity, tour or short
presentation is an easy way to get networking underway.

Also, on March 13, Alchemical Nursery is organizing an upstate NY permaculture
convergence which I hope a bunch of local permies can attend. Visit
www.flxpermaculture.org for information.
