I see libidn has nothing to do with the other problem...apologies for the
mis-post. libidn-shlibs 1.31-1 updated OK after installing automake1.14,

I got this same error in trying to install ghostscript, I think, on another
machine a few days ago, but relegated it to a to-do list for later. I doubt
that it's connected in any way with X11.
Install automake1.14. We can’t fix this in the distribution until we get CVS
back.
