Subject: notes on fink instructions

Ben,

just a few notes based on my just having followed the instructions at

http://fink.sourceforge.net/news/jag-bootstrap.php

Please pass these on to the page's maintainer if that isn't you?

------

Step 2: It is important that the path containing the directory
fink-0.11.0 should not include names with embedded spaces!

My download directory has for long been /Check\ it\ out and when
I tried to run step 3 and specified "use sudo", the script sets
$homebase to '/Check it out' and tries to execute the command

   sudo /Check it out/fink-0.11.0

causing sudo to say it couldn't find command /Check. This would
really freeze a unix novice. ;-)

------

Step 3: the novice should really be warned that this step is going
to execute happily for 30-45 minutes generating reams of
messages that nobody needs to read.

------

Step 4: /sw/etc/fink.conf belongs to root, and so does /sw/etc
so in order to save the updated file, BOTH have to chmod'd.
  cd /sw/etc
  sudo chmod 777 .
  sudo chmod 666 fink.conf

-------

Step 6: If in step 3 you specified "use sudo", in this step you will
get an error:
    # fink selfupdate-cvs
Fink is not configured to become root automatically.

You have to enter instead, sudo fink selfupdate-cvs

--------

Other than these minor hiccups the directions are quite clear.

Thanks,
  Dave Cortesi
