yes I had just got it...I had to dpkg --purge the pkg remove the info and
patch files run fink selfudpate and then rebuild the pkg...I don't know
what is causing it though.

hmmm...no go. o well. I'm just splitting up the packages into smaller
grops now, and the first chunk works. Let me know if i can help debug it.

This is a sporadic problem which hasn't been debugged yet. Try doing
"fink reinstall automake", just by itself, and then run your big command
again.
