Sure. But let me tell you how to build the web page. To test it,
you probably should enable PHP in your Apache settings.

Thanx Max, I am going for it. 'libxslt' is only in unstable, and it
resulted in needing:

The following 22 additional packages will be installed:
 db3 db3-shlibs docbook-dsssl-nwalsh docbook-dtd expat expat-shlibs gdbm

libxslt-shlibs manconf openjade python sgml-entities-iso8879 tcltk

Mmmm pkgs,

Lloyd, thanks again for your work on updating the X11 section of the fink
documentation. I have now incorporated your changes into the web site,
and made a few additional updates.

I'd like to encourage other Fink developers to check it out
  http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/x11/index.php
to see if there is anything else that needs to be updated.

Perhaps some mention should be made of how to get the usage options for startx?
Currently startx -- -help works for me because startx doesn't understand it, but I'm
sure there's a better way. This is especially useful for folks using pure Darwin or
not running the OS X WindowServer, since -fakebuttons and -fakemouse{2,3} aren't
automatic in these cases.

Sure. But let me tell you how to build the web page. To test it,
you probably should enable PHP in your Apache settings.

1) Checkout the web CVS module (this assume you either have th dev
tools or the Fink cvs package installed):

  cvs -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/fink login
  cvs -z3 -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/fink co web

2) Now modify the XML in there (or copy your already modified XML
file into the correct place

3) Make sure you have the libxslt package installed (required to
compile the web page data)

4) cd into the xml subdir.

5) Type make check to perform a syntax check of your XML code, to
see if you made no mistakes. Fix any you find

6) Type make - this will compile that XML into HTML/PHP

7) If no error happend now, type make install, this will copy the
newly created data into the proper spot

Now you can view the data. In my case I just made a symlink
~/Users/fink pointing to the web CVS checkout, and enabled PHP in
my apache settings, now I can use any web browser to test the web
site locally (minus the MySQL driven parts of course).

Cheers,

Max

[Fink-devel] http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/x11/index.php update?

2002-05-20 Thread Lloyd Budd

Hello all,

I want to help some how, and as X11 is a little bit out of date, I thought
that I could submit some diffs vs it or something. Is the source in XML?
Is my doing this desirable? How would you like me to go about it?

Best regards,
Lloyd

There are lots of different approaches to dealing with the Mac-text vs.
Unix-text issue. You actually wanted mac2unix, I think, or something like
that...

If you are not going to use emacs or vi, there is a free Mac text editor,
BBEdit Lite, which handles the Mac/Dos/Unix text conversion very nicely.
It notices which format your file was in when you opened it, and saves
it in the same format by default; or you can switch to one of the others
by a simple menu choice.

I'll look at your attachment this evening.

 Anyway, I downloaded
x11.xml . Opened it in the oxymoronic, Mac TextEdit. I had a full
 updates
and went to save, and which time it informed me that TextEdit cannot
 save
 in plain text. Ok :-7
all you need to do is go to format/make plain text, or hit command-t
 :-)

 Hello Chris,

Thank you for the info! Interesting, I recreated the scenario. Of
 course,
without following your excellent recommendations. TextEdit complains on
save, TextEdit does not save SimpleText format; document will be saved
 as
rich text (RTF) instead, with a new name. Is x11.xml really SimpleText
 format?

 -lloyd

Here is the problem:
TextEdit saves both plain text (.txt) and rich text (.rtf), but not
SimpleText (Weird thing with Type Creator codes)
I think that IE is the problem (It adds extra type creator codes to
many files) I recommend using OmniWeb (Free: www.omnigroup.com)

Here is the solution:
Force format fix by pressing Cmd-Shift-T until it changes to a blocky
monospaced type
Run File-Save As... and replace the older file. This will also cause
it to open properly in the future.

HTH,
Kyle Moffett
