FWIW, I removed all fink ghostscript installations, installed the ESPGS
package manually, then installed system-ghostscript-7.05-3. Seems to
work fine.

No idea about this.

Also, does ghostscript8 produce PDFs viewable in Apple's Preview.app? Is
there a reason to stick with Ghostscript 6?
The only problem I am having with ghostscript-8 is with importing images

Not really. I believe that the conflict would be between netpbm and
netpbm10, but only one of these gets installed. The -shlibs can
coexist. Here's what I have on my system:

i netpbm-bin 10.12-2
1.3-5 is in stable.

Is there a way to get around this, though? It would be nice, since

Hello,
Which version of 'system-xfree86' is necessary for those who install
'Apple's X11 PB v3' and 'Fink' for the first time?
Will it work with a version prior to 'system-xfree86' 4.2-11 from
unstable?
Thanks and regards,
Pedro

My understanding is that the version of system-xfree86 from stable
didn't work with Apple X11 0.3, and that's why a new version was made.

Kow,
Yes, that's what I thought, but I need confirmation, in order to
advice beginners.
This won't be a problem when system-xfree86 gets updated in stable. For
right now, I suppose we can tentatively recommend installing the
unstable system-xfree86 (but not enabling all of unstable).
