Language solved. I put a export LANG=en_US.UTF-8 just before calling
gnome-session and it passed it thru. I was puzzled by this, because all other
window managers had english. Gnome setup is odd to say the least.

How can I get gnome to only show gnome applications. That is do not
show kde applications in the menus.?
It should only show the gnome applications not he kde applications as
well.
