FWIW: It turns out it was a bad XCode 1.5 disk! I had performed a complete reinstallation of Mac OS X when after reinstalling XCode 1.5 I saw the same exact behavior. However, the console showed no installation errors. I downloaded a new disk image and the problem stopped. I restored my Mac from backup, uninstalled XCode 1.5 and reinstalled from the new disk. Applied the GCC 3.3 Nov update. Works great now! Mutella compiled without incident. Thanks for sticking with me on this.
