D'oh - I'd only seen one page of the instructions on upgrading fink
from the MacGimp install!
My last post was entirely down to operator error! It's now all happy
again - though I'm sure you'll all be hearing from me again!

Marcello, that other thing with locate you suggested didn't work - it
returned no error, but it did nothing either.
I tried putting the path for dpkg in(like this: sudo /sw/bin/dpkg -i
apt_0.5.4-1_darwin-powerpc.deb), and it gave this error:
dpkg: `install-info' not found on PATH.
