I've been troubleshooting a strange X11 font problem, and have discovered that /etc/fonts/ is missing. I did two things around the time of the disappearance:

  1. move fink to a directory on another volume symlinked to /sw, and

  2. remove fink's xorg package to go back to Apple's X11.

I wouldn't have thought that either of those actions could cause my problem, but googling pointed me to an old fink-users e-mail from many months ago: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=9509794

This message said that removing the xorg package would also remove /etc/fonts/. Is it possible that this bug is still around? If so, this is a major departure from the policy of not letting fink mess with stuff outside /sw.

Can I just reinstall the BSD package from my original OS X 10.3 disks, or were /etc/fonts/fonts.dtd and fonts.conf updated in a later software update?
