Duh, you'd think I would know to check the logs
It sure isn't obvious to me. I tried copying your .profile and .bashrc
to my account and switching to bash as the default shell, and was able
to start from the icon--I'm also running XFree86-4.3.0 --so it doesn't
look like your environment.

Hmm... I never did verify whether X was actually using bash (in my case
/bin/bash) or not.
Maybe "Use default login shell for this user" really means "use tcsh,
which is the default shell for users"? That doesn't sound right, but
does jibe with the facts. This sounds like an upstream problem
A, got it, maybe... look in /etc/shells, and take the
comments in there with a pinch of salt. My guess is that
using /bin/bash would work, but /sw/bin/bash won't
unless you update this file...

I don't think there would be a file telling X to look there,
it is a more unix level thing that if it doesn't think you
have a valid login shell (as listed in that file) then it
will at best use the "default" which seems to be tcsh, and
at worst, refuse to do anything at all. So you'll have to
try

Dear Chuck et al:
Although I was able to compile with the IBM fortran compiler on my G4,
I immediately ran into runtime errors. In my case the program was CNS
(crystalllography and NMR system). A colleague had compiled this and
the NMR parts indeed to run much faster. However, for the

I know from bitter experience that the intel IBM compilers are not compatible with
gcc-compiled libraries - if you are going to use the IBM compiler then you have to
recompile EVERYTHING.
We ended up going with compilers from the Portland Group for that very reason.

hi,
I actually had looked at the FAQ prior to posting. This is what I see.
% fink selfupdate-cvs
sudo /sw/bin/fink selfupdate-cvs

I will now run the cvs command to retrieve the latest package descriptions.
The 'su' command will be used to run the cvs command as the user 'aelony'.

If you get something like this when you try to update:
*** malloc: vm_allocate(size=1342177280) failed with 3
install fink's cvs package, then try again. Apple broke it's cvs with the
10.2.8 update.
I had no idea what the problem was, and the fink.sf.net site doesn't
mention it anywhere yet.. I
I have not been able to update either. I am not getting the same

There was a thread just today about this. Have you tried running the
Console utility before trying to run X, so that you can see the log?
