my tmp.php is as follows:
?php
Unserialize('a:2:{i:0;s:1:1;i:1;s:1:2;}');
?
What is your tmp.php file, so I can see
if either hacking to fix mine also solves others or else if there are
multiple separate problems here.
I get the error I reported if I just run php with no arguments.
Thanks

I have a problem with the way xpdf handles images while printing,

That means the init.sh pointing to the 32-bit Fink distribution.
init.sh itself is the same for either setup. So you get it

The bad news, of course, is that this situation was not detected,
neither by the virtual package mechanism nor by the test in the ppl
compile script.

Does this mean I have to get the 32 bit fink and use it along with the 64 bit

Yes. As Stefan said What I have is two instances of fink, one 64-bit
(which hosts most of the stuff) and the other 32-bit (which only holds
mplayer, firefox, and their dependencies).

Nope. Moving your 64-bit install will break it. Just bootstrap a
32-bit one in e.g. /sw32 .
