Solved. I am importing data from an external source and they obviously
changed format for that ID from char(5) to char(6) which suddenly
renders all 5-char-values with an addional blank on the right side.

It would of course have been my duty to have my routine check all
incoming external data for integrity and compliance with the
agreed-upon schema.
In addition, looking very very close I probably would have noticed the
only and absolutely obvious reason for that exception earlier.

Please excuse that posting of mine, but - believe it or not - I have
already been "analysing" this problem for nearly 3 hours...
unbelievable....
