Hello,
I have a similar problem.
I want to use firebird.dotnetprovider with VS2010 and Entity Framework

1. I successfully installed Firebird .NET Data Provider V2.5.2 with
the .msi installer
2. Downloaded and unpacked DDEX V2.0.5
3. gacutil /i FirebirdSql.VisualStudio.DataTools.dll
4. edit C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319
\Config\machine.config
5. Import registry file
6. Starting VS2010 on Windows7
7. I select the Connect to Database button in the Server Explorer window
a. There is not Firebird (only Access, ODBC, SQLSErver and Oracle)

Whats wrong?

Best regards,
Timo

OH. I was using VS2010 (Runas administrator) and opening the machine.config
file in VS2010's editor.

Just realized that this may be a problem. AS VS2010 itself may be using the
file.

Anyway I'll try those other suggestions thanks.

That is the way I did it too.

Even though you are an administrator you have to run the editing application
with 'Administrative Rights' - run as administrator - in the shortcut
properties of notepad etc.

Support stuff build on top of it. Connections configurators, wizards,
... and also see DB structure. On the other hand you can step into and
add the support. We'll be happy to include it.

Subject: [Firebird-net-provider] How do I generate an EDMX file with Firebird
Embedded?

Hello,

Win7 Pro 64bit

How do I generate an EDMX file (for the Entity Framework - inside of VS2008)
geared toward an app that uses the Firebird Embedded version?

Going through the steps of adding a new ADO.net Entity Model (within VS2008) I
don't see a Firebird provider for a connection when I get to that point of
connecting to the Embedded database (VS default GUI for listing available
providers for databases when trying to connect to a database). I have tried
adding the Firebird.Net Provider v2.5.1 version of the
FirebirdSql.Data.FirebirdClient.dll into the GAC etc. but that doesn't have any
effect.

I have tried installing the DDEX Provider 2.0.4, but that really didn't take
(the GUI comes up transparent on the form like its not enabled).

Thanks

Re: [Firebird-net-provider] VS to Firebird

2009-11-20 Thread Will Ferguson
If I knew how to do it I’d gladly contribute and write the instructions.

I didn’t get the firebird Database for free. It was foisted upon me by a third
party Software program the company uses.

I want to integrate the business processes. We have SQL, JADE and Firebird
Databases that need to “talk” with each other . So I’ll need to access 2
Firebird Databases.

Read access is fine. I don’t own the data structure but I do own the data.

I’m not complaining because something has gone bad. I’m complaining because
nothing has gone right.

Nothing personal guys. Firebird is a great product. I’m just frustrated I can’t
work with it in VS yet.

Surely there is someone out there that can. And is willing to help me
understand where I’m going wrong.

It may be that this is a VS problem not a firebird problem.

PS. I do a lot of work for charity. I contribute to user groups all over the
world. I am not looking for a free ride , nor am I lazy. I am a developer. That
often means I’m still working at 3am and drinking way too much Mountain Dew. I
apologise for being rude.

Hello:

If I’m asking for too much then I’m happy to provide instruction on how
to pull your head out of your own arse.

I was going to write a rude answer ... but as i'm out of the project now, i
will simply say that if i was Jiri i will *never* do the installer for the DDEX
provider, never, never, never ( it's a tool for developers, and if you think
the instructions in the readme aren't clear enough you could try to explain
what parts of it aren't clear, to update them, instead of being complaining ...
).

There are tons of people using the provider ( that has a *lot* of really nice
features ) but only a *few* ( really *few* ) of them contributing to the
project ( i don't know if there are more people that Jiri right now, that has
done a really nice job since i left the project ... and before too ;) ), and
there are a lot of areas where people can help, but ... looks like it's nice to
get all for free without doing nothing, and complaint when somethings goes bad
or didn't work as you expect and with the time really is discouraging
( at least for me it was at the time )

Re: [Firebird-net-provider] VS2010 dat providers

2009-11-17 Thread Will Ferguson
Step 1. Install FirebirdClient into the GAC.

Note:GAC is the Global Assembly Cache
Gacutil is a command line tool that helps load information into this GAC

To start Gacutil
Click [start]
[all programs]
[Microsoft VS2010]
[visual studio tools]
[visual studio Command prompt (2010)]

Type gacutil [enter]
You will see all the available switches type gacutil /? To see more
detailed help

To install the dll file you saved in STEP 0: I saved the DDEX files to
E:/downloads/firebird it will be different for you

Eg typegacutil /i
E:/downloads/firebird/Firebirdsql.Visualstudio.Datatools.dll /f

You should get a message saying "assembly successfully added to the
cache"

If you don't check the spelling and the location of the file is correct

To find the signature of the Assembly :

Type gacutil /lr Firebirdsql.Visualstudio.Datatools

If the assembly was installed correctly gacutil will return something
like this

The global Assembly cach contains the following assemblies:
Firebirdsql.Visualstudio.Datatools, version=2.0.4.0, culture =
neutral, publickeytoken=bae6c78ccb0fcdb3, processorArchitecture=MSIL

Number of Items = 1

___

OK now to Step 2 : Modify The machine Config

To do this you'll be editing a file called machine.config with notepad.

I did a search for this file on my machine and I could not find it. I
did find this though..
C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.21006\Config\machine.config.defa
ult

I'll try that and see if it works.

When confronted with criticism, you can react in either of two ways:

1. "Aha, maybe there's room for improvement, and this is a great
opportunity to find out where and how."

2. "This is a moron who doesn't understand anything or just can't read
instructions. I'll ignore him."

Which one is better?

This readme is not what I'd call exact steps.

Let's look at step 1

Can you please tell me If I've got this part right.

Step 1. Install FirebirdClient into the GAC.

Note:GAC is the Global Assembly Cache

Gacutil is a command line tool that helps load information into this GAC

To start Gacutil

Click [start]

[all programs]

[visual studio tools]

[visual studio Command prompt (2010)]

Type gacutil [enter]

You will see all the available switches

___

What file is installed into the GAC ??? is it
Firebirdsql.Visualstudio.Data.tools.dll ?

 Is it Firebirdsql.Visualstudio.Data.toolsUi.dll ???

Or both.. or neither

What is the command lin needed to install the file???

Is it gacutil i/
E:/downloads/firebird/Firebirdsql.Visualstudio.Data.tools.dll (doesn't
work)
