Firebug Lite on mobile browsers?
In the quest for mobile web development tools Firebug Lite plays an interesting role. It provides a ton of the features that mobile browser currently lack (and I'm fine with not having a debugger etc.). Though when trying to run Firebug Lite on Mobile Safari on an iPhone (iOS 4.x) its mostly unusable. A lot seems to actually work, but there are a few blockers. So far I couldn't find anything in regards to a roadmap for Firebug Lite (only related issue I found was http://code.google.com/p/fbug/issues/detail?id=3443 ), so instead of starting to post bug reports that would get closed down as invalid I'd like to found out if mobile browser support is something the Firebug team (or Working Group?) is interested in. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Firebug" group. We don't close enhancement requests as invalid. We might ignore them ;-). Our current focus for enhancements is to split Firebug in to client/ server to support Firefox multiprocess, cross browser debugging, mobile, and IDEs like Orion and SkyWriter. Lite will evolve into the client or front-end half. This will be a long process, probably take all of 2011 to be complete. The split itself does not mean we can support mobile. In particular locked phone platforms will require cooperation from the phone software vendors. We anticipate being able to support Fennec and Chrome on Andriod. jjb -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Firebug" group. Re: Firebug Lite on mobile browsers?
As John pointed out, we're making some deep architectural changes in both Firebug and Firebug Lite which means we'll be able to support remote debugging in the future (that is, using your desktop computer to debug your mobile phone). Another different thing is making Firebug Lite more friendly to the mobile environment. This is not our priority right now (as we're already committed with some big changes), but we're always open to bug reports, enhancement requests, and of course, patches. The only (big) problem is that I don't have smart phones to test Firebug Lite, which means I could be hard to detect/solve problems without having a mobile to test it. Anyway, I plan to buy a smart phone this year so I can test Firebug Lite on it. Even so, we're a small team and cannot afford several mobile devices, and that's why the reports are so important. 2011/1/12 Jörn Zaefferer > So far I couldn't find anything in regards to a roadmap for Firebug > Lite (only related issue I found was > http://code.google.com/p/fbug/issues/detail?id=3443 > ), so instead of starting to post bug reports that would get closed > down as invalid I'd like to found out if mobile browser support is > something the Firebug team (or Working Group?) is interested in. > Please do report your problems and suggestions. I can't promise any dates, but a better mobile support is something I definitely would like to see in Firebug Lite. Considering our limitations, I reiterate: patches are extremely welcome. We could easily use the beta channel to test such patches. I also wondered some time ago having a "extra Lite" version of Firebug Lite aimed for mobile browsers: less panels available (only Console and maybe HTML), a redesigned minimalistic UI, and some small tweaks. Anyway, it was just an idea to overcome the 2 bigger problems regarding Firebug Lite on mobile browsers: memory consumption (Firebug Lite's source alone consumes ~1Mb), and small visual space available (Firebug's UI was designed to work on 800x600 or higher resolutions). But this is just an speculation as I never tested how long it takes to load Firebug Lite on a mobile phone. regards, Pedro Simonetti. > > -- > You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups > "Firebug" group. > To post to this group, send email to fire...@googlegroups.com. > To unsubscribe from this group, send email to > firebug+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com > . > For more options, visit this group at > http://groups.google.com/group/firebug?hl=en. > > -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Firebug" group.
