Re: [Flashcoders] Memory Leaks
Usually I just track them down, figure out where my setInterval calls are and try to plot out in what situations they aren't being cleared. You could also put some trace calls in the classes or methods you think are clearing, and if it stops tracing then you know it's gone from memory. Additionally you might want to look into better organizing your setInterval. Maybe put them in an array that you can query. When you clear the interval set that index to null. You could trace the array and see all the non-null values. Maybe you could also make a class to manage your setInterval calls better. A clearAllIntervals method in a interval management class could help out a great deal. I've also had problems before with Delegate memory leaks. There was a great article on Delegate memory management in the last year or so - I can't remember where it was, but you can find a similar one here: http://teknision.blogspot.com/2005/07/delegatesbe-careful.html ben Michael Trim wrote: Hi Flashcoders, What techniques do list members use for tracking down memory leaks in AS2? Re: [Flashcoders] Cut and paste: Flash CS3 and Illustrator CS3
This should be fine. This is a workflow that was intentionally designed into the system. The paste process can optionally invoke the last settings applied during import, where possible. The only downside is that you have more intimate control over layers/keyframes, text to editable/vector/bitmap, creating movie clips during the import process, etc. If you don't need any of those features, you're good with copy and paste. [Flashcoders] RGB tinting using the colorMatrixFilter()

You're setting the background color to an opaque color, and then drawing the transparent bitmap on top of it. var m_cBitmap = new BitmapData( target_mc._width, target_mc._height, true, 0x0 ); if you don't specify the color, it might be using 0xff00 (black with an alpha of 255). --Brian On 5/8/07, David Cohn [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hey all, I must be missing something straight-forward here... Re: [Flashcoders] RGB tinting using the colorMatrixFilter()
This might not be the most elegant solution, but since you know 128 = full shift to new value and 0 and 256 = no shift to new value you can use a formula to calculate the shift and then build the new rgb value after the calculations are complete. Assuming you want a linear relationship, it would look something like: GRAPH: Multiplier vs Value: *0 128 256 1/ \ . / \ . / \ 0 / \ [pardon my ascii art!!] CODE: //check if original R/G/B component value is above middle point or //bellow it: if (originalValue:Number 128):Number { multiplyer = 128 * (originalValue/128);//ratio } else { multiplyer = 128 * ((256-originalValue)/128);//ratio } //originalValue is the r or g or b parameter you are //transforming, you run this function once per r,g,b component //in other words: run this function 3 times! for full r/g/b //or use a matrix transform... newValue = valueToConvert * multiplyer; return newValue;//assuming you put this code in a function call? } haven't checked the math, there might be an error in my formula... :P hope this helps! with kind, seb. [Flashcoders] MovieClip.loadMovie(), unloadMovie() and attachMovie()
I am rather new to Flash and ActionScript. I think maybe I am not quite understanding how I should properly being using these functions and hoping someone can enlighten me. I am trying to write a general sort of player. I have an empty MovieClip placeholder on the stage (let's call it 'mc') I want to be able to load content into and then replace with other content. Sometimes what I want to load in an external SWF file, and sometimes I want to load a MovieClip that is within the library of my top-level movie. I don't have any problem doing this: mc.loadMovie('myMovie.swf'); // detect end of that movie, then: mc.unloadMovie(); mc.loadMovie('myMovie.swf'); // just run same one again So, mc is still there after unloadMovie() and I can load and play the same thing again using the same stage instacne. I also don't have any problem doing this: mc.attachMovie('myLinkIdentifier', 'myInstanceName', mc.getNextHighestDepth()); // detect end of that movie, then: mc.attachMovie('myLinkIdentifier', 'myInstanceName', mc.getNextHighestDepth()); (I realize the code above is creating more instance on top of one another and using up more memory. That's fine - I have seen the animation example (Tofu Hunter) that came with it. The important part is that I can still attach a symbol after having already done so.) What I can't seem to get working the way I would expect is to be able to load a SWF, then unload it, then attach a library MovieClip symbol to the same placeholder. Something like this: mc.loadMovie('myMovie.swf'); // detect end of that movie, then: mc.unloadMovie(); mc.attachMovie('myLinkIdentifier', 'myInstanceName', mc.getNextHighestDepth()); Maybe there's some logical reason to not be able to do this, but I guess I'm just not seeing it. Can someone please explain this in a little more detail? Hi there, I have been learning flex over the last month or so, and had done a moderate amout of flash 8/as 2 class work. I can obviously see that flex 2 for apps hands down. However, when is flash (cs3) more appropriate? Web sites? Or is that even true? Is it just more of a preference? I am excluding doing any real animation. Because to me that is obvious as well. So I guess whcih is more appropriate for general website construction? I tend to use a lot of remoting, and again I am sure it is more of a preference type thing, but just thought i would ask... [Flashcoders] Creating a text highlight tool
Hi list, any tips on how to create a text highlighter? The perfect solution will be that I use the text cursor inside the textfield. Now, I was thinking of using drawing API on the invisible mc below the textfiled and when I would click in the textfield I would start drawing a rectangle on that mc. But, the problem is that with the text cursor you can click anywhere between the lines and it will select the closest line. So I can't get the exact y coordinate where to start drawing the rectangle. Also, I don't think I can use background-color css property as it's not supported according to Flash documentation. Note that version is not the problem. I can use CS3 and deploy to FP9. The only solution I have left is to create the simple analog version of highlighter, where you would just draw rectangles (once you would click) on the mc bellow the text, regardless if it's exactly covering the line of text. In this version I would get rid of the text cursor and create a highlighter cursor, but in the ideal way, you would have the text cursor and than you would click the option highlight the selected text.
