[Flashcoders] ASDT code hinting / auto completion

2007-05-09 Thread Johan Nyberg
I have a hard time getting the code hinting to work in the ASDT in
Eclipse. I have MTASC installed, and I've tried setting the classpath to
all these different paths, but to no avail:

C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Flash 8\en\First Run\Classes

C:\Documents and Settings\Johan Nyberg\Local Settings\Application
Data\Macromedia\Flash 8\en\Configuration\Classes

C:\wamp\www\_flash\mtasc-1.13\std

C:\wamp\www\_flash\mtasc-1.13\std8

Am I missing out on something?

Regards,

/Johan

[Flashcoders] Cut and paste: Flash CS3 and Illustrator CS3

2007-05-09 Thread Count Schemula

Are there any real downsides to cutting and pasting from Illustrator
CS3 into Flash CS3?

I've had great luck, especially with tricky gradients, just cutting
and pasting right into flash.

The library gets some AICB files in it, but, otherwise, the assets
look great and it's much faster than exporting.

[Flashcoders] Memory Leaks

2007-05-09 Thread Michael Trim
Hi Flashcoders,

What techniques do list members use for tracking down memory leaks in AS2?

It's a problem with repetitive functions called by setInterval events.

It's slow and cumulative but if you leave it on you can see the PF and Mem
Usage, creep up.

Can anyone out there share any of their tips, I'm tearing my hair out here,

Thanks,

Re: [Flashcoders][OT] is the Flash9/CS3 delivered to anyone yet?

2007-05-09 Thread Count Schemula

I did the download and backed up to a DVD.

I assume, I'd always be able to download the file from Adobe as well.

I had good luck downloading from MM, and I hope that continues.

You may want to buy the boxed version.

I only mention it because with MM and their site I got into the habit of
purchasing the download version and later on, checking the also send a cd
checkbox for reinstalls. But the Adobe site,

a) doesn't have this option, which you don't find out until the end of the
process because the MM option was at the end of the process.

b) the cs3 web premium version is 2+gigabytes and is 1 monolithic rather
than seperate downloads - so download errors are still possible even in
todays broadband world and backup will require dvdr rather than cdr

c) I can't remember c, but think there may have been one.

I would also like to add, as long as I'm already spamming folk with OT that
1) The price for CS3 for studio 8 owners is way more reasonable than I
expected and has engendered some good emotions on my part towards adobe,
(especially since Corel has completed it's ruination of both Painter and
PSP)
2) I'm amazed how similar photoshop cs3 seems to whatever version I had
last which was, like, 1997.
3) Fireworks CS3 Is really nice. Glad they kept it and did something with
it.
4) We really need to create some open source liquid layout components for
Flash 9.

Do well,

Sorry for the OT

Out.

Re: [Flashcoders] Memory Leaks

2007-05-09 Thread ben gomez farrell
Usually I just track them down, figure out where my setInterval calls
are and try to plot out in what situations they aren't being cleared.
You could also put some trace calls in the classes or methods you think
are clearing, and if it stops tracing then you know it's gone from memory.

Additionally you might want to look into better organizing your
setInterval. Maybe put them in an array that you can query. When you
clear the interval set that index to null. You could trace the array
and see all the non-null values. Maybe you could also make a class to
manage your setInterval calls better. A clearAllIntervals method in a
interval management class could help out a great deal.

I've also had problems before with Delegate memory leaks. There was a
great article on Delegate memory management in the last year or so - I
can't remember where it was, but you can find a similar one here:

Re: [Flashcoders] Cut and paste: Flash CS3 and Illustrator CS3

2007-05-09 Thread Lists
This should be fine. This is a workflow that was intentionally designed into
the system. The paste process can optionally invoke the last settings
applied during import, where possible.

The only downside is that you have more intimate control over
layers/keyframes, text to editable/vector/bitmap, creating movie clips
during the import process, etc. If you don't need any of those features,
you're good with copy and paste.

[Flashcoders] removeMovieClip or unloadMovie

2007-05-09 Thread Lois IN

Hi!

First of all excuse me for my english.

I have a little question for you about optimises my flash movies:

I generate a movie clip dynamically: createEmptyMovieClip, and loads a SWF
into this.

When I don't need more this MC and the SWF, I only delete the MC with:
removeMovieClip.

My question is: I need to unload the SWF too?(unloadMovie)

If I don't unload the SWF, this stills remains in the player cache?

Thank you very much coders!

[Flashcoders] RGB tinting using the colorMatrixFilter()

2007-05-09 Thread Mike Mountain

Hey guys

I'm working with greyscale images - assume neutral colour temperature is 50%
grey. These are shaded from white to black, white representing light, black
shading, and all the variable shades in between etc.

I need to tint the greyscale bitmapData to produce a shaded coloured image
using the colorMatrixFilter() from an RGB or Hex value.

so if the whole image was 50% grey (ie. r=128, g=128, b=128) it should
become r=256,g=0,b-0 - black should stay black, white should stay white but
the colours in between should be shades of red.

Anyone got a clue how I can do this?

Cheers

[Flashcoders] RE: Zombie symbol - can't get rid of some text

2007-05-09 Thread Brian Weil
Maybe you are not viewing the entire work area in the flash IDE? If the text
is not showing up in the library it may just be some accidentally pasted
text somewhere off stage that is not in a symbol.

Open the file in flash and go to View-Work Area then look around your
stage for the offending text. If you don't have view work area checked the
flash IDE masks the stage while your authoring.

[Flashcoders] Re: Flashcoders Digest, Vol 5, Issue 19

2007-05-09 Thread David Cohn

Brian,

Yes!  That works!

Wouldn't you think that would be the default, if one doesn't specify
the fillColor at all?

(And, DOH! I was reversing the alpha values in my mind, and
specifying FF as fully transparent!)

Thanks,
--Dave

did you try filling with 0? You're setting the background color to an
opaque color, and then drawing the transparent bitmap on top of it.

var m_cBitmap = new BitmapData( target_mc._width, target_mc._height,
true, 0x0 );

if you don't specify the color, it might be using 0xff00 (black
with an

alpha of 255).

Re: [Flashcoders] RGB tinting using the colorMatrixFilter()

2007-05-09 Thread sebastian
This might not be the most elegant solution, but since you know 128 =
full shift to new value and 0 and 256 = no shift to new value you can
use a formula to calculate the shift and then build the new rgb value
after the calculations are complete.

Assuming you want a linear relationship, it would look something like:

GRAPH: Multiplier vs Value:

*0  128 256
1/ \
.   /   \
.  / \
0 /   \

[pardon my ascii art!!]

CODE:
//check if original R/G/B component value is above middle point or
//bellow it:

if (originalValue:Number  128):Number {

multiplyer = 128 * (originalValue/128);//ratio

} else {

multiplyer = 128 * ((256-originalValue)/128);//ratio
}

//originalValue is the r or g or b parameter you are
//transforming, you run this function once per r,g,b component
//in other words: run this function 3 times! for full r/g/b
//or use a matrix transform...

newValue = valueToConvert * multiplyer;
return newValue;//assuming you put this code in a function call?
}

haven't checked the math, there might be an error in my formula...
:P

hope this helps!

with kind,

seb.

[Flashcoders] MovieClip.loadMovie(), unloadMovie() and attachMovie()

2007-05-09 Thread ej

  I am rather new to Flash and ActionScript. I think maybe I am not quite
understanding how I should properly being using these functions and hoping
someone can enlighten me.

  I am trying to write a general sort of player. I have an empty MovieClip
placeholder on the stage (let's call it 'mc') I want to be able to load content
into and then replace with other content.

  Sometimes what I want to load in an external SWF file, and sometimes I want
to load a MovieClip that is within the library of my top-level movie. I don't
have any problem doing this:

  mc.loadMovie('myMovie.swf');
  // detect end of that movie, then:
  mc.unloadMovie();
  mc.loadMovie('myMovie.swf'); // just run same one again

   So, mc is still there after unloadMovie() and I can load and play the same
thing again using the same stage instacne. I also don't have any problem doing
this:

  mc.attachMovie('myLinkIdentifier', 'myInstanceName',
mc.getNextHighestDepth());
  // detect end of that movie, then:
  mc.attachMovie('myLinkIdentifier', 'myInstanceName',
mc.getNextHighestDepth());

  (I realize the code above is creating more instance on top of one another and
using up more memory. That's fine - I have seen the animation example (Tofu
Hunter) that came with it. The important part is that I can still attach a
symbol after having already done so.)

  What I can't seem to get working the way I would expect is to be able to load
a SWF, then unload it, then attach a library MovieClip symbol to the same
placeholder. Something like this:

  mc.loadMovie('myMovie.swf');
  // detect end of that movie, then:
  mc.unloadMovie();
  mc.attachMovie('myLinkIdentifier', 'myInstanceName',
mc.getNextHighestDepth());

  Maybe there's some logical reason to not be able to do this, but I guess I'm
just not seeing it. Can someone please explain this in a little more detail?

Thanks,
-ej

[Flashcoders] When is the right time? Flash vs flex (not features though)

2007-05-09 Thread dnk

Hi there,

I have been learning flex over the last month or so, and had done a
moderate amout of flash 8/as 2 class work.

I can obviously see that flex 2 for apps hands down. However, when is
flash (cs3) more appropriate? Web sites? Or is that even true? Is it
just more of a preference? I am excluding doing any real animation.
Because to me that is obvious as well. So I guess whcih is more
appropriate for general website construction? I tend to use a lot of
remoting, and again I am sure it is more of a preference type thing,
but just thought i would ask...

I know there were othjer discussions regarding flash vs flex, but I am
not really asking about the advantages of one over the other (pre
se)

Re: [Flashcoders][OT] is the Flash9/CS3 delivered to anyone yet?

2007-05-09 Thread Kevin Matzdorf

has anyone received a 1327 invalid drive error while trying to install cs3?

 I assume, I'd always be able to download the file from Adobe as well.

 I had good luck downloading from MM, and I hope that continues.

 You may want to buy the boxed version.

 I only mention it because with MM and their site I got into the habit
of
 purchasing the download version and later on, checking the also
 send a cd
 checkbox for reinstalls. But the Adobe site,

 a) doesn't have this option, which you don't find out until the end
 of the
 process because the MM option was at the end of the process.

 b) the cs3 web premium version is 2+gigabytes and is 1 monolithic
rather
 than seperate downloads - so download errors are still possible even in
 todays broadband world and backup will require dvdr rather than cdr

 c) I can't remember c, but think there may have been one.

 I would also like to add, as long as I'm already spamming folk with
 OT that
 1) The price for CS3 for studio 8 owners is way more reasonable than I
 expected and has engendered some good emotions on my part towards
adobe,
 (especially since Corel has completed it's ruination of both Painter
and
 PSP)
 2) I'm amazed how similar photoshop cs3 seems to whatever version I
had
 last which was, like, 1997.
 3) Fireworks CS3 Is really nice. Glad they kept it and did something
 with
 it.
 4) We really need to create some open source liquid layout components
 for
 Flash 9.

 Do well,

 Sorry for the OT

 Out.

preorder

[Flashcoders] popup blockers and flash

2007-05-09 Thread Paul Chang
I've been experiencing some inconsistent behaviors using
ExternalInterface (AS2) to call JavaScript to launch a customized
popup window.

FireFox works seamlessly for both platforms.

Safari on Mac and IE on PC are inconsistent.

For example, when I call a custom JavaScript function, IE will choke,
but it will work calling the window.open command.

Mixed in with all of this is the popup blocker issue.

Can someone speak to this issue and suggest a dependable approach?

Thanks in advance,
Paul

[Flashcoders] Creating a text highlight tool

2007-05-09 Thread Alen Balja

Hi list, any tips on how to create a text highlighter? The perfect solution
will be that I use the text cursor inside the textfield. Now, I was thinking
of using drawing API on the invisible mc below the textfiled and when I
would click in the textfield I would start drawing a rectangle on that mc.
But, the problem is that with the text cursor you can click anywhere between
the lines and it will select the closest line. So I can't get the exact y
coordinate where to start drawing the rectangle.

Also, I don't think I can use background-color css property as it's not
supported according to Flash documentation.

Note that version is not the problem. I can use CS3 and deploy to FP9.

The only solution I have left is to create the simple analog version of
highlighter, where you would just draw rectangles (once you would click) on
the mc bellow the text, regardless if it's exactly covering the line of
text. In this version I would get rid of the text cursor and create a
highlighter cursor, but in the ideal way, you would have the text cursor and
than you would click the option highlight the selected text.

Thanks,
Alen
