[Flashcoders] Slightly OT: Jaws

2005-12-07 Thread Karthik
Hi,

   I'm trying to test the accessibility of my SWF, but for the life of
me, I can't get Jaws [1] to read anything in *any* SWF - be it mine or
any of the accessibility example SWFs on MM and elsewhere. I've tested
the app on XP + IE6 and XP + FF 1.5 on two different boxes. I've also
tried testing this on F7 and F8, and also compiling for 6, 7 and 8
with no luck. The SWF are completely skipped everytime. This is Jaws
7.00.135U.

  I'm sure I'm probably doing something silly. The question is ..
what? Configuration settings in JAWS?

Any ideas?
Cheers

 Hi All,

 I am doing some research for an upcoming project ...

 With the new Bitmap Class and FileReference.download functionality in
 Flash 8, is it possible to create a drawing app that can grab what the
 user has drawn (using the Bitmap Class) and then download it to a folder
 on a webserver as a JPEG (using the FileReference.download method)?

 Or can I only sample every colour value (using getPixel) and then send a
 string of these values up to a script (such as PHP) on the server that
 then creates a JPEG on the fly (using the GD Graphics Library)?

 Thanks,

 Adrian Parr

Hi,

You can resize the stage real time? I wasn't aware of that. If you
mean you want to resize the picture when it loads to whatever the
stage is, use MovieClipLoader.

Read up on it, and pay particular attention to onLoadInit - that's
where you put your resize code.

 tmp.loadMovie(images/background/bg_image1.jpg);

Re: [Flashcoders] external jpg resize script

2005-12-07 Thread Timothee

 tmp.loadMovie(images/background/bg_image1.jpg);
 tmp.onResize = function() {
 this._width = Stage.width;
 this._height = Stage.height;
 }
 Stage.addListener(tmp);

The onResize handler will be destroyed when the image is done loading.
There are several ways to achieve what you want, here are some:
- assign the resize handler after the jpg has been successfully loaded (use
a Loader class)
- create your movieclip and another nested inside. Load your image in the
nested clip and add the resize handler on the outer clip
- use an external controller for the resizing.

Re: [Flashcoders] Swtich Statement issue!?

2005-12-07 Thread Julien Vignali

Dan,
I'm also using the switch with static attributes from other class
without any problems. I guess you have a type error problem.

Check the trace of a strict equality test:
trace(currItem.getMediaType() === VideoVO.SWF_STATE);
If it returns true, then the switch should evaluate properly. If not,
the switch will branch to the default case because the condition and the
case aren't of the same type.

2005-12-07 Thread rob costello
On a related note, I'd be interested to know what people make of
destroyObject method in the V2 components ie UIObject.destroyObject()
I've had no luck using it to clear component instances
does a component instance call it on itself, as the syntax seems to
suggest; or call it on another instance?

componentInstance.destroyObject(instanceName)

either way it doesn't unload the instance for me; I end up unloading
components with unloadMovie, setting variables to null, and sometimes
loading empty mc's into the component depth ... all of which feel like
hacks since I can't get the obvious method to work properly

thanks for remedial advice

It doesn't work because of the infamous scope problem.
the this in the function refers to the erase_btn, and var2 is not an
attribute of the button.

You need to use the Delegate:

import mx.utils.Delegate;
erase_btn.onPress = Delegate.create(this, eraseTF);
function eraseTF(){
var2.text = ;
}

Check http://www.osflash.org/flashcoders/as2 to see the different ways

stanceUrl.push(developers[i].attributes.stance);
introUrl.push(developers[i].attributes.intro);
}
 }
 else{ trace(xml not connected);}
}
main.load(main.xml);

The problem:

Why can't access the arrays out side the onload function? I want the onload
to just populate the arrays, so i can use their contents somewhere else.
Is this an xml thing or am i doing something wrong. If i trace any of the
arrays out side the onLoad function i get undefined.

[Flashcoders] Problem with xml loading a second time

2005-12-07 Thread Paul Steven
Hi there

I am loading in some xml to get the values for a Poll on my site. This works
fine when the page first loads. However after someone has voted in the Poll
I then want to read in the new values from the xml file.

The code I have is as follows:

pollData = new XML();
pollData.ignoreWhite = true;
pollData.load(xml/movies_poll.xml?uniqueID= + getTimer());

pollData.onLoad = function(success){

trace(XML file loaded);

if(success){
// my code goes in here
} else {
trace(XML file could not be loaded);
}

}

As I said, this works fine when I first load the page.

After a vote I then call the following function

Get_Poll_Data();

i.e

function Get_Poll_Data() {

trace (Get Poll Data);

//load in XML
pollData = new XML();
pollData.ignoreWhite = true;
pollData.load(xml/movies_poll.xml?uniqueID= + getTimer());

};

However it is not reloading the xml file again and I have no idea why not.
It does not appear to be calling the .onLoad function the second time

Any help much appreciated.

2005-12-07 Thread Sajid Saiyed
Hi,

The datagrid is not able to display special characters:

The ç character in that name Françoise is displayed as Square block.

Is there a solution to this?

Thanks.

in flash how to cordinate moive name with variable like

 trace(_root[box_m add i].d+(j).txt1)

I *think* what you're looking for is

(_root[box_m+i].d+j).txt1

If the variables are i=1 and j=2, then this will find the variable d of the
movieclip box_m1, which, let's say, is jiggle, and return the value
jiggle2

(By the way, that wasn't a very informative subject line. Next time, try
something like variable names (urgent) )

Re: [Flashcoders] HTML markup for highlighted text...

2005-12-07 Thread Claus Wahlers
 I'm working on a chat, and what I want to do is highlight text that is
 whispered. But the background-color style property doesn't work on spans,
 does anyone know of a good way to set the background color of text in an
 HTML text field? Is it even possible?

Not possible, without using ugly hacks (eg. layer Movieclip under
Textfield, draw background shape yourself).

This is one of the features i'd LOVE to see implemented in FP8.5 (and,
borders on spans, etc - or even: access to a mini DOM within HTML
Textfields, with a native way of mapping x/y coords to elements of
that mini DOM). The inline box model of FP's Textfield always sucked,
and is continuing to suck as far as i can see.
cheers,

Re: [Flashcoders] external jpg resize script

2005-12-07 Thread GregoryN
Hello Mike,

You should use another object (Object) as listener.
Just replace your code with the following:

//SET STAGE PROPERTIES
Stage.showMenu = false;
Stage.scaleMode = noScale;
Stage.align = LT;

//RESIZE EXTERNAL JPG
var tmp:MovieClip;
tmp = this.createEmptyMovieClip(bgExpand_mc, 1);
tmp.loadMovie(img4test/r02.jpg);

var tmp1:Object = new Object();
tmp1.onResize = function(){
_root.tmp._width = Stage.width;
   _root.tmp._height = Stage.height;
};

Stage.addListener(tmp1);

//  It will work ;-).

[Flashcoders] Flash PHP XML problem

2005-12-07 Thread Sajid Saiyed
Hi friends,

I am facing a new challenge (maybe not new to others here)

I have this application where I am searching MySql database and
returning the results in an XML format using PHP.

I have some 600 records in the database (Which I feel is not too big.)

Now, some of the results are showing up on screen and others are not.
If I directly try to access the URL, i can see that the XML is
generated correctly.

I am also using

on(result(){
}

On the XML Connector to wait till the data loads.

So my question is, is there some safe limit to the number of records
in XML for the XML connector and Dataset to work properly?

Since the data is sensitive, I am not able to show you the working link.

Ask me if you need more clarity on the issue.

Thanks for your help.

 if (i == 0.7) trace(here);

 as you might expect, after running for 7 frames, it traces here.
 However if you change 0.7 to 0.8, it stops working.

 I assume this is to floating point math and rounding errors and stuff?
 In what way can i check for equality to 0.7 then? With a bigger than,
 smaller than construction?

 This seems so weird to me...

Re: [Flashcoders] where and how can I learn actionscript bytecode

2005-12-07 Thread Tyler Wright
It's not going to delete because somewhere else in your code you have a
reference to that object. For example:

var myObj = new A();

myObj.destory(); // won't be deleted until myObj no longer points to the
class.

If you really have your heart set on following something a little more OOP,
try this.

class A
{
public static var instance:A = new A();

private function A()
{
// construct
}

public function destroy()
{
delete instance;
}
}

a singleton that will destroy it's own reference. Then the code is within
the class. The problem now is that you're required to always reference this
class through the static class

A.instance.doSomething();
A.instance.destroy();

Flash is getting better (garbage collection model changes) with AS 3.0, but
for AS 2.0 you're stuck.

Tell me what you want to do in destroy and Ill bet there's a better
solution that is still OOP. If it's just to delete the object then there's
no reason to have the method. Sorry.

Tyler

On 12/4/05, Alias [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Hi Boon,

 Good luck with learning bytecode.

 However, I suspect that the reason your first delete statement doesn't
 work is because of the way flash's garbage collection works. When you
 call delete on an object, it is marked for deletion by the garbage
 collector. It uses reference counting to decide whether to actually
 delete something, so I suspect that if you try to delete an object
 from within itself, it most likely will not actually do so, until that
 object has finished up. I'd say you should probably always try to
 delete objects from outside of their own scope.

 It's likely that if this is indeed the case, the problem will look
 exactly the same at the bytecode level.

 Hope this sheds some light on your problem,
 Alias

On a related note, I'd be interested to know what
people make of
destroyObject method in the V2 components ie
UIObject.destroyObject()
I've had no luck using it to clear component instances
does a component instance call it on itself, as the
syntax seems to
suggest; or call it on another instance?

componentInstance.destroyObject(instanceName)

either way it doesn't unload the instance for me; I
end up unloading
components with unloadMovie, setting variables to
null, and sometimes
loading empty mc's into the component depth ... all of
which feel like
hacks since I can't get the obvious method to work
properly

'delete' only removes the reference, not the actual

no way to actually destroy an object. All you can do
is remove all
references to it, and wait for the GC to remove it
from memory at some
unspecified time.

var obj = {data:5};
var obj_ref = obj;
obj_ref.data = 6;

// this proves that it's a reference, and not a copy:
both show the
same
// value, even though I only changed one
trace(obj.data); // 6
trace(obj_ref.data); // 6

// delete the reference
delete obj;

// as you can see, the object itself was not deleted,
only that
// particular reference.
trace(obj.data); // undefined
trace(obj_ref.data); // 6

Re: [Flashcoders] Who wants MIDI in the Flash Player?

2005-12-07 Thread Martin Wood
Interesting question, although ive made use of midi everyday for, well,
too long now :), im really not sure if making it part of the player as a
single functional unit would be the best move.

Personally i would rather see a more open, low level approach to sound
in the player upon which MIDI and other implementations could be developed.

Now that the player (8.5 and onwards) will have much better binary data
handling, theres nothing to stop me or you from creating a MIDI file parser.

Thats one side of the equation, obviously the more intricate side is
audio playback.

I've been moaning about the audio capabilities of the flash player for
longer than i can remember, and would dearly love for it to become much
more capable.

The options i can think of so far are (and they arent exclusive)

1. An api for accessing midi devices on the user system, much like
accessing a webcam, where you can query for which devices are present,
then get a handle to a device and start manipulating it, something like:

var midiDevice:MidiDevice = Audio.getMidiDevice(1);
var instrument:Instrument = midiDevice.createInstrument();
instrument.setChannel(1);
instrument.setProgramNumber(34);
instrument.setController(23,44);
instrument.noteOn(velocity);
etc...

2. ACCESS TO THE SOUND BUFFER. Please. :)

This would open up a lot more possibilities for audio generation,
manipulation etc..

The 8.5 player already has a Loader.loadBytes feature where you can send
binary data locally, i.e. you can create a jpg in the player and then
load it into a movieclip without sending it to a server. This is great,
but I think a similar scheme for audio would be fantastic.

With a simple sound.setBuffer(binaryData) you could do a huge amount of
interesting things.

Sound synthesis, generation.

	From musical applications, to game sound effects, or just sound
notifications within applications. All of this could be done with a
minimal impact on filesize. No need for .wav's , mp3's etc..

Sound capture

	You could capture audio from mic and allow the user to edit it and
process it. You could build annotation tools, voice messaging, musical
applications etc..

	Also if you can get a handle on the audio stream before it hits the
audio device you could have live control over streamed audio, tone
controls, reverb, delays, echo cancellation, noise reduction. etc..

So, personally I would rather see the components available to us as
developers, upon which we can build a variety of applications. MIDI
playback being just one particular application of the feature set.

Also other similar systems like OSC could be used.

anyway, im glad you are asking and i'll happily contribute anything to a
document you will put forward requesting audio related capabilities.

thanks,

Martin

Re: [Flashcoders] floating point

2005-12-07 Thread Boon Chew

This has to do with the fact
that not every decimal value can be exactly
represented by a binary floating point. So the results
of adding a bunch of binary numbers that is not exact
to begin with will come out to be
different than the actual binary floating point for 0.8.

You can either turn the comparison into an integral
one as some has proposed or introduce
an absolute error (epsilon) into the comparison:

if (Math.abs(i - 0.8)  0.1) trace(here);

 if (i == 0.7) trace(here);

as you might expect, after running for 7 frames, it traces here.
However if you change 0.7 to 0.8, it stops working.

I assume this is to floating point math and rounding errors and stuff?
In what way can i check for equality to 0.7 then? With a bigger than,

This seems so weird to me...

[Flashcoders] Passing Init object to a flash component

Hello,
I am trying to pass an init object to a custom component using the following
code:
thisButton=game.createObject(GameButton, button+i+j,
this.getNextHighestDepth(), {labelText:button+i+j, bColor:0x00});

I had tried unsuccesfully to set the button's style using
thisButton.setStyle(themeColor, bColor);

I'm kind of unclear as to whether the things passed in the init object are
passed to a constructor.

As I was writing this question out something dawned on meIs it called an
init object because those values are passed as arguments to the init()
function of the component in which case I can refer to them within that
function?

If I need to give more details for the question please let me know- it's
kind of a stumbling block for me right now-

Re: [Flashcoders] Who wants MIDI in the Flash Player?

2005-12-07 Thread hank williams
I think midi support would be nice. In truth though, the question is a
little broader than midi. It would be great if there were a sandbox
safe way to access USB and/or firewire devices. Midi is but one. It
would need to work something like the way that the webcam access works
where the software asks the user if it is ok for the user to access a
given device.

I certainly think midi should be an important part of any such
initiative, but I see it kinda like giving us binary sockets. We need
the machine internal equivalent to binary sockets.

On another note I also think, particularly with the speed of 8.5, that
it would be great to give us direct access to the sound buffer. I am
not sure how fast 8.5 math will be but if you can do a good FFT we
could be making actual synthesizers and audio processors in flash. To
me that would be cool.

 I'd like to take a poll. Do you think MIDI should be included in the Flash
 Player? Why or why not? I want both votes and opinions as I'll organize
 the results and send them off to Adobe, formerly known as
 Macromediahttp://www.macromedia.com.
 Please respond with some sort of opinion whether it's pro or con. I'll list
 the pros/cons I can think of below (you don't have to read the rest of this
 email if you already have your opinion).

 A little more on MIDI:
 MIDI is a standard music format (some will argue that it's the
 onlystandard) that represents pitches and instruments to be played as
 a song.
 It's extremely small, being the vector of music, and has to be interpreted
 by a users soundcard. Almost all computers these days support standard
 MIDI, though it sounds synthesized (especially on the voice and string
 instruments). Some soundcards or additional software transform the common
 MIDI into amazing orchestrations, but most users don't have this advanced
 playback.

 MIDI pros:
 can be generated dynamically and played through a sequencer to allow
 complete on-the-fly customization of sound.
 very small in filesize
 supported by almost all soundcards
 numerous applications for the creation of MIDI songs (many are free)
 it's a standard that has been around for a long time (so there is a lot of
 support for it)
 a small implementation (wouldn't increase the Flash Player size by more than
 50K)

 MIDI cons:
 most people will have a more synthesized sound
 user experience isn't guarenteed to be consistant (for those with higher
 quality soundcards)
 as with all advancements, could make it really easy for developers to have
 annoying sounds playing on their sites ;)

 In short, if the Flash Player had a midi sequencer built in it would allow
 developers to create lightweight interactive music applications, such as this
 sheet music rendering application http://mediarain.com/musicrain or music
 creation applications. It could also allow users to experience a website
 that contained sound effects or decent background music at very little
 bandwidth cost. Formerly know as Macromedia has always been good about
 listening to the developer community and will surely make efforts to build
 the features we need, if we tell them. This is your forum.

If you find it interesting, I'll put this in osflash site.

Here is the idea behind this implementation :
Flash mathematic calculation is slow.
And Tween rely on heavy calculation, even though Robert Penner
optimized them as much as possible.

But once you've done the all equation, why should you begin again ?
So I made a cache system available that intelligently serve
precalculated values.

That's all.

Moreover, instead of using an onEnterFrame, I use setInterval.
What th deal ?
setInterval is able to force rendering the screen 1 times faster than
the framerate.
So if your tween needs a must render every step algorithm, it's
available.

I've also rethink the API to make it more easy for (/me).
There is an exemple of use on the blog.

As usual, you are not slave with MovieClip properties, you could tween
Color values, as soon as they get some accessor methods.

Cheers.

Re: [Flashcoders] HTML in XML

2005-12-07 Thread Sander Janssens

Make sure your XML document is in Unicode. I use Unicode-8, but our ASP
pages write Unicode-16.

You don¹t need any CDATA tags. I have XHTML info bubbles with CSS and
images; text is like this:

bubble id=0
p class='titel'Network Address Translation/pbr/
pNAT or Network Address Translation takes place on the boundary img
src='texts/kaart.jpg' align='right' hspace='6' vspace='8'/between public
and private networks.
/bubble

Just be sure to close all tags.

Sander.

 I am bring in some html text to show in flash in an xml file like this:

 description id=0
title![CDATA[bpicture 0/b]]/title
 /description

 When i trace it back in flash, it shows up like this:

i know that there are server-side tools to convert images into PDFs.
should just be a matter of hooking up a PHP front-end to them.
although, i wouldn't doubt there's a PHP PDF library to do it too. a

Try declaring them *outside* the onLoad() function, because those variables

Hey all,

here's the code i'm working with:

var main:XML = new XML();
main.ignoreWhite =true;
main.onLoad =function(success:Boolean){
 if (success) {
var developers:Array = this.firstChild.childNodes;
var siteUrl:Array = new Array();
var stanceUrl:Array = new Array();
var introUrl = new Array();
for (var i=0; idevelopers.length; i++){
siteUrl.push(developers[i].attributes.site);
stanceUrl.push(developers[i].attributes.stance);
introUrl.push(developers[i].attributes.intro);
}
 }
 else{ trace(xml not connected);}
}
main.load(main.xml);

The problem:

Why can't access the arrays out side the onload function? I want the onload
to just populate the arrays, so i can use their contents somewhere else.
Is this an xml thing or am i doing something wrong. If i trace any of the
arrays out side the onLoad function i get undefined.

Fyi ~ i've already tried making the arrays global, no go that way.

they were finished to allow other running programs to use it.

I guess what I'm trying to say is quite a bit you can do without
multiple threads.

And just as a side note, I came up with an interesting idea today on how
to emulate multiple threads in Flash. Just use more than one movie! Talk

[Flashcoders] Q:using BitmapData to Record Screen Actions

2005-12-07 Thread bitstreams
Hi
I want to create a simple app that allows the creation of 'recordings',
basically movies that are recordings of anything that might happen on the stage.

I'd appreciate any feedback on my basic logic which is as follows:

1) Create a 'snaphot routine whose only purpose is to create a collection of
'snapshot' bitmaps of the MovieClip we are recording
2) Create a 'makefilmstrip' routine whose purpose is to compose a 'filmstrip'
using the previously created bitmaps, one per frame, in a blank 'host'
movieclip

//BEGIN PSEUDO CODE

function snapshot(mc:Movieclip);

//create bitmap with unique name

//take snapshot of moviceclip passed in
uniqueBitmapname.draw(mc);

//store a reference to this Bitmap in an array

bitMaparray.push(uniqueBitmapname);

//continue until done, presumably controlled by another 'start and stop
recording function' controller
//when done call the 'make filmstrip' function
}

function makefilmstrip(){

//first attach Movieclip (our blank filmstrip) to stage giving it the name
'filmstrip'
//it has a stop action on frame 1

// step2: create empty movieclip within filmstrip giving it a unique name and
depth

//step3: attach previously created bitmap to this holder movieclip
//we reference these bitmaps throught the array created in the snapshot function
//not sure if it is possible to reference previously created bitmaps this way,
suggestions?

var mybitmapreference = bitMaparray[counter];//

uniqueholderMovieclip.attachBitmap(mybitmapreference);

//increment global counter
counter++
//increment frame in filmstrip , not sure if this is possible but we need some
way of advancing the frame in filmstrip
//so that the next uniqueholderMovieclip Movieclips are created on sequential
frames, does this make sense??

filmstrip.nextFrame();
//continue steps 2 3 till we run out of bitmaps

}//end makefilmstrip

//END PSEUDO CODE

Any feedback appreciated

case object:

The answer about the Flash Player and Adobe Reader was a little
confusing. We updated the QA to make it more clear. Here's the
updated text:

What are Adobe's plans for Flash Player and Adobe Reader?

Our long-term plan is to develop a universal client by combining PDF,
Flash and HTML in a single, integrated runtime. Of course, we will
continue delivering the Flash Player as a small, efficient runtime for
content and applications on the web, and Adobe Reader for viewing and
interacting with PDF documents and forms. The integration of these
technologies into a unified framework creates a ubiquitous platform that
runs on virtually every device, and dramatically expands the
opportunities to create compelling solutions.

I need to create a Flash application for a small non-profit can't afford the
$999 price tag of MM's Flash Remoting gateway. Is there a third party
remoting solution like AMFPHP that I could use? Essentially I need to read
and write to an Access database on a Windows web host.

Thanks for any suggestions and pointers to examples for this.

2005-12-07 Thread A.Cicak
Believe me multithreding is lot harder to debug, read and maintain in most
cases assuming that onEnterFrame is not made
in way that you put 20 loops all in one function (onEnterFrame) . You could
make object (MultiLoop) which has method Update, some private counters, etc.
and for each problematic loop you just make object MultiLoop, define its
Update method, add it to array, and in on enter frame loop through that
array and for each element call Update. In this way you could even do stuff
like set priority to each loop, and for example call update in each pass
same number of times as is MultiLoop.Priority value. Code to process all
loops including priority support wouldnt be longer that 10-15 lines of code,
and thats only thing you put in onEnterFrame. Although in real world program
should be designed so there are not too much problematic loops anyway.

 Windows 3.1 was single threaded. As I understand it, programs would hook
 into the event loop and be given a handle. While they held the handle,
 they could run their own code, but they were supposed to release it when
 they were finished to allow other running programs to use it.

 I guess what I'm trying to say is quite a bit you can do without
 multiple threads.

 And just as a side note, I came up with an interesting idea today on how
 to emulate multiple threads in Flash. Just use more than one movie! Talk
 between the UI movie and the background worker movie with a
 LocalConnection object, and you're in business. No more UI lock.

   I have read in this forum that someone loosely coined the phrase
 Flash is a single thread app, it's hard to imagine something as high
 performance and intricate as Flash to be a single-threaded app.

   So I started to take the above statement to mean that the Actionscript
 VM executes all the code in a sequential fashion but that Flash player
 itself is multithreaded, is that a right assumption?

   And what about code that are asynchronous in nature, such as sound
 playing ( new Sound(), onSoundComplete), server-side call return (such
 as LoadVars, XML.onLoad)? Are these all happening in the single thread
 of code execution?

   Looks like a book on Flash and AVM Internal would be nice. :)

RE: [Flashcoders] Can FCS detect player version?

2005-12-07 Thread Alistair Miller

If you are just looking to perform different actions per flash version...

Using a flash 7 movie (have not checked 8 but assume it would work on that
as well) you can check what version of flash the client is being used.

Then code specific actions for that version of flash to execute. In one
project I used the following (it's a bit of a bodge but works :o) )

//On frame 1 I checked for to see if flash 5 sytax was supported.

var checkFlash5 = true;

// as flash 4 player does not support _root this condition will
return  false
// as 4 is no good displayed anim asking them to upgrade :o)
if (_root.checkFlash5)
{
gotoAndPlay (4);
}
else
{
play();
}

// on frame 2

// contain any actions you wish to perform for a flash 4 player and
stop();

// on frame 4

// contains code to check flash player versions

o = new Object ();
o.version = getVersion().split(,);
o.majorVersion = int(substring(o.version[0],o.version[0].length,
1));
o.minorVersion = int(o.version[2]);

// you can then perform any actions you wish to depending on version

Hope that this is maybe of some help

Ali

Just an idea:

If you place a flash 3, 4 or 5 inside your HTML and inside that flash
you detect the version, you could than loadMovie a SWF accordingly?

What happens if I load a 8 SWF inside a 5 SWF are my 8
fonctionnalities still execute? :-\

I'm quite sure that this must be around somewhere, but this time I didn't
have any luck searching the archives...

What I'm looking for is similar to a deep-copy/clone method (e.g.
Arul/Tatsuo
http://chattyfig.figleaf.com/mailman/htdig/flashcoders/2004-March/106149.htm
l) but instead of getting a clone of the object in return, I'd like to get
a

String representation of the object.

Example of the desired functionality:

o = {a:1, b:2, c:{c1:['a','b','c'], c2:true}};
var s:String = universalToString(o);
trace(s);

Output:   {a:1, b:2, c:{c1:['a','b','c'], c2:true}}

In my case the object will not contain any methods, just (deeply nested)
'vanilla' Objects, Arrays, Strings, Numbers and Booleans.

Thanks for any pointers!

Okay your point is well taken. Especially since I am currently working on
fixing a multi-threaded Java socket application at the moment.
Multi-threaded programing isn't a walk in the park, that's for sure. But,
with that said, depending on how Scott implements his MovieClip approach it
might be a lot cleaner than doing onEnterFrame() all over the place. It
certainly sounds like a legitimate approach to me.

  they were finished to allow other running programs to use it.

  Subject: [Flashcoders] Flash is a single-threaded app? Maybe it's just
  theAVM? or...
